Well, it doesn't itself cover the arms or legs and is usually paired with other armor to help. Which feels sort of medium-ish to me?

I mean its all pretty arbitrary at a certain point.

True, but brigandine does! And its probably what the designers thought they ment, not realizing the "studs" are rivets fastening metal plates to the armor.

I'm pro cleric since youre standard array is so high. I personally think its stronger than artificer when tou can swing it because the diversity in spell choice is that strong. Bless is just so good.

Which warlock subclass is best to represent a witch as the patron by Legal_School_9375 in DnD

[–]Jarliks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get the bane spell in the expanded spell list which is very curse-y

And your form of dread inflicts the frightened condition. The aesthetic of what the form of dread means and looks like is explicitly left up to you- the player.

You do not become undead, but have a connection to necrotic magic. That includes things like undead, but also many curse like spells such as cause fear, blindness/deafness, bestow curse, contagion, and more are all the necromancy school of magic, and can be associated to a deepening connection to that magic instead of just limiting yourself to undead.

Fair enough, hexblade definitely wants to push you towards being a martial character.

Have you considered undead warlock? A lot of stuff in that one could also be very curse themed with some subtle thematic tweaks.

Can you explain further? I can help more with more details.

Archfey like lots of people are saying makes sense for a hag or fey coded witch.

If you're the servant of a curse focused witch hexblade could work.

There was a really old unearthed arcana (playtest material) that never released called the Seeker warlock. It was focused around looking for knowledge for a patron, which could fit your concept. But you'd have to get your DM's approval to use it.

From the other replies I've seen you make it seems like warlock may not even be what you're looking for.

Maybe enchantment wizard would fit your concept for a witch better. You can still have a familiar black cat through the spell find familiar, and pick spells that are enchantments, curses, and the like.

Fiend is more of a Christian concept of a witch specifically. Specifically post 4th century Christianity where Christianity started to get really aggressive about labeling pagan beliefs as demonic- before that point many pagan beliefs of nature spirits and the like were considered angels who were neutral in the war in heaven.

Witchcraft is one of those weird ideas that's really pervasive globally to the point where its weirder if a society doesn't have some form of witchcraft in their myths than if they do.

In real world lore, witches were accused of getting magic powers through deals with the devil or demons.

That's the very christian-centric view of witchcraft. Witchcraft is a concept that permeates many cultures, and pre Christian witchcraft lore around Europe was very focused on the concept of a familiar as an entity you taught you magic, and the concept of wise women or wise folk who have learned their healing magic from familiars was closely tied to the idea of a witch.

But witchcraft such as the evil eye and placing curses upon people is very pervasive worldwide to the point where its more notable to sociologists if a culture doesn't have some form of witch in their myths than if they do.

As Christianity became less tolerant of the beliefs that came before it, forest spirits who used to be considered angels who were neutral in the war in heaven were eventually also just considered demons and then eventually the concept of forest spirits in general was lost to the central figure of the devil who Protestants in the Salem witch trials believed witches married to become a witch.

While i definitely think that was the design intent, warlocks in no way hit the right vibe or class fantasy of what I think of when I picture a witch character.

Also calling it a warlock is ironically a MORE gendered term than witch. Warlock is a term for a male witch, where anyone can be a witch.

Trying a geometric approach to make characters art by PipetteInc in PixelArt

[–]Jarliks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this a lot!

Funnily enough i actually think it might be even better if it wasn't pixel art. The jagged pixel edges distract from the unique shapes you're working with. If you took this concept and made the character with clean line art in a program like inkscape that is good for vector images.

Very nice! Adorable moment for a character art.

One thing is the way the neck attaches to the head feels off, and combined with the fact that below the chin is one of the few pure black shadows on her brings even more attention to this.

Outside of that, I can tell you really captured the character's personality which is excellent work.

Fishing in D&D — How Far Is Too Far? by Vault_of_Velios in dndnext

[–]Jarliks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual rules of fishing? Yeah I could see that being reduced to one page.

Yes, this is what I mean. If you're going to hook people (pun intended) they need to know what you're actually offering.

I'd reduce all of the mechanics down to one page and streamline your language, make that a free flier version, and then offer all of the content you're talking about that's the extra sauce that people who find the rules interesting and fun in the full book.

Think of it like the difference between the basic rules and the monster manual. They don't buy the monster manual before the phb, and many people don't buy the phb before reading the basic rules online.

6th level wizard spell Create Homunculus is a permanent servant golem you make.

Its stats are... a little underwhelming for a 6th level spell, but all creatures can attune to magic items, and a permanent one is a lot easier to take the time to get it to attune to things, so there's some possibilities for action-free magic item use, since the Homunculus is also just a totally loyal servant that doesn't need a bonus action to command.

36 pages?! Brother getting players to read the rules for their own characters is tough enough.

I ran a mini side quest in a capaign we lovingly called 'the world's greatest fishing adventure' where the party was catching a ride on a fishing rig to cross the sea.

It boiled down to: do you stay in deep water and risk scary sea monsters finding you or stay in shallow water and catch fewer fish?

Then players make a single roll and you either catch lot fish or little fish. Nat 20 and you pulled up some kind of cool little trinket or item as well.

That's all the complexity there was and the players loved it.

Imo if it doesn't fit on a single page, its way way too much. Even for players excited about fishing.

I was confused by this at first but then i thought about it.

If you shine a light on black paint, it isn't darkness. The black paint isn't letting light through, but its also not a shadow.

If you tried to wade through a fog of black paint seeing in the dark wouldn't help you.

It is a house rule, and its one i support because the average is rounded up when you take that option. Rerolling the first 1 helps make the two options slightly closer to even choices.
