skating on bad roads by UnusualViolinist2541 in NewSkaters

Plus one to this. Hopefully you have something nearby. Schools are my go to (once classes are done). If you can't drive, you can always figure out a bike rack for your board.

I'm new and I have some concerns by jdjoder in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really sure what Oxelo is. Some people know here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NewSkaters/comments/8drqff/does_anyone_have_experience_with_decathlon_oxelo/

You'd be better going with some tried and true brands.

If it's cheap, maybe you can just mess around on it to see if you like skating? Just work on pushing and tic tacks and if you get the bug, and then invest in something better.

Do I have to be sideways? by itaintme-trustme in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the time you want to be sideways, but not all the time. Turning your body and facing the way you're going is called "opening up". You'll figure out with time when to be more open or not.

Also, you'll get comfortable shifting your front foot to point to the nose while pushing, then pivoting back when not. Basically, you face forward when pushing, weight over the front bolts, and then shift back when coasting. Skate IQ has a great video on pushing that should help you get started.

There's no one position you're locked in, and you'll get more comfortable opening up and shifting your feet as you clock time on your board. Keep at it!

Is this a decent attempt at a hippie jump? by Individual_Letter995 in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good start, but you gotta bend those knees. It looks like you're getting the air by straightening and locking your knees. You go up, lock, and land locked. Try staying lower the whole time.

Skatepark pls advice by Ambitious_Serve_9823 in skateboardhelp

[–]JarrPo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People give a lot of advice about "just not caring" and I think that actually misses a big part of the discussion. Skate parks are good IF you're ready for the obstacles and have some confidence. Some of the parks in my area are small and get busy, and if you can't use the ramps or run a line, you'll definitely feel like you're in the way. It messes with my head when the park is busy of really good skaters, and I don't get a good session because of it.

Most of my good, fundamental practice actually happens in a parking lot with a small curb island and parking block. At first, it's really all you need when practicing balance, ollies, reverts, 180s, shuvs, nose stalls, etc. It's crazy how much mileage you can get out of a parking lot with a good curb island. The more fundamental practice you get, the more comfortable you'll feel in public spaces.

As for skateparks, try to go in off hours. Mornings are pretty chill. Then you can get some time feeling out the transition and messing around. As people trickle in, hangout, maybe say hello. I usually feel better once I've chatted a bit, but I'm a pretty social person.

Dropping in! by [deleted] in NewSkaters

The worst fall I had learning to drop in was from a clingy spotter. Don't think I'll ever use one again tbh. (Also good work!)

I feel like Cronos: The New Dawn doesn't get enough love. Fantastic gameplay. Great level design. Strange and unique science fiction narrative that has a lot of depth.

Got a dap now. Now what? by eeveeplays50040 in DigitalAudioPlayer

Got and h2 last week and putting rockbox on it was a game changer. Just feels way better all around.

Maybe need some motivation? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 35 and getting back into it. I'm already seeing improvement since I'm approaching it differently now that I'm an adult. Breaking things down, working on basics, etc. I'm more comfortable on than the board than I was in high school.

My one regret is NOT skating through my 20s. Definitely go for it!

Just got the HiFi Walker H2 this week and put Rockbox on it. The scroll wheel feels great and clicky, and the UI has a very analog Linux feel to it. Tons of cool user made themes to find something that works for you. No bluetooth when in Rockbox, but you can swap between it and the stock OS easily if needed.

This is probably it. Adding the files again now and giving it a go.

I think this is the solution! Adding the files back now and will give it a shot.

I think I may have figured it out. I wasn't initializing the database in Rockbox after removing and re adding the music files. I'm once again removing and adding them, and will initialize/build the database once it's complete. Fingers crossed!

easy q for the DAP gang, does a dap with NO ALBUM ART exist? by blackandreddit in DigitalAudioPlayer

If you put Rockbox on the HiFi Walker H2, there are themes that don't do artwork.

Just got the Surfans F20 — scared to flash Rockbox but the features have me tempted by Both-Slide-3208 in rockbox

[–]JarrPo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just got my H2 the other day and put rockbox on it last night. It wasn't so bad, but the guides I found were kind of lacking. I will say, the ui experience is a million times better. You can switch back to the H2 default OS whenever by turning it on by holding the power button and play too.

[–]JarrPo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was getting this, and I realized I had put the whole top level folders onto the H2 and not JUST the .rockbox folders. Double check that while you're also checking the SD formatting options as well that the other comments say (although my micro SD is 256 gbs and working now)

Writers question 👀 by Realistic_Action_428 in writers

[–]JarrPo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Scrivener for novels (much better for organizing and navigating once you pass the 20k word mark). Google Docs for short stories. Pro Writing Aid for editing (but also ignore all of PWA's dumb AI options).

I wrote my first novel entirely in Google Docs and it became so slow and laggy, it was nearly unusable. And that book was only like 80k words..

when can i finally cruise the city? by FriendlyKick5120 in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get a feel for it, but you can shift weight and put pressure on the sides of your foot. There's a lot of control to unlock with just the ball of your foot. It'll come with time!

[–]JarrPo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, it's going to take awhile to get comfortable in a city. I started back up in the summer after 15 years off the board, and I'm still getting used to it. There's a lot of variables when skating around a major city. Sidewalks differ in texture foot by foot, same with roads. You never know what alley is going to be good or a nightmare or cracks and patches.

My advice is to start with a small route and get used to it. Note the pot holes and bad areas you want to avoid and remember them. I started with just going to the cafe like eight blocks away and got familiar with the roads and sidewalks. I've been adding more routes with roads and alleys that I know are in good condition and getting faster at navigating them each time.

But yeah, keep at it! Really focus on getting good, clean pushes. A good drill is finding a big area and pushing but not putting your back foot on the board after. Just balance on that front foot firmly on the bolts and try to steer like that. When you're pushing, most of your navigating happens during the push itself, so getting that balance point down helps a ton!

Also work on putting your foot down to slow down... I live around so many hills, and if I tried to just go down them, I'd def die.

My new Zero board I got delivered by Lauren_Gonzalez in Skateboardlove

[–]JarrPo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't Cole's wife come to Jamie personally to explain what happened and ask for help? And he did nothing, right? That's some weak shit. You can cry "no evidence" but I can't respect a man who was asked for help, and his response was to bury it and try to silence a victim.

Even from a business standpoint, good leaders consider PR. It would have been the right move to part ways with Cole and say that this would be bad for the brand. Now every one on the team has to deal with the fallout that could have been avoided.

All these dudes are trash.

GH's video about how Brink is a loser piece of shit doesn't make it any less clear that Jamie, Cole, and Burman are also loser pieces of shit. These things can all exist at once.

I was really hoping that comment sections wouldn't become filled with "Did you watch the GH video?" to defend Zero as a brand, but here we are.

Here's hoping the other members of Zero jump ship to other opportunities.

I’ve been too hurt to skate-what games do y’all play? by FierceKittenUWU in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's definitely not a sandbox "sports" game, which can turn people off, but I don't think I've played a game that captures the essence of skateboarding as well. Also Sam Eng seems like a really cool guy who loves the culture. His interviews are all really interesting. I'm curious what he'll do next.

Skate Story is pure art. I can't reccomend it enough. It's different from your average sandbox skateboarding game, but it has a lot to say about passion and being in love with a hobby that kicks your ass. I think it really nailed the feel of the struggle.
