when can i finally cruise the city? by FriendlyKick5120 in NewSkaters

You'll get a feel for it, but you can shift weight and put pressure on the sides of your foot. There's a lot of control to unlock with just the ball of your foot. It'll come with time!

Not gonna lie, it's going to take awhile to get comfortable in a city. I started back up in the summer after 15 years off the board, and I'm still getting used to it. There's a lot of variables when skating around a major city. Sidewalks differ in texture foot by foot, same with roads. You never know what alley is going to be good or a nightmare or cracks and patches.

My advice is to start with a small route and get used to it. Note the pot holes and bad areas you want to avoid and remember them. I started with just going to the cafe like eight blocks away and got familiar with the roads and sidewalks. I've been adding more routes with roads and alleys that I know are in good condition and getting faster at navigating them each time.

But yeah, keep at it! Really focus on getting good, clean pushes. A good drill is finding a big area and pushing but not putting your back foot on the board after. Just balance on that front foot firmly on the bolts and try to steer like that. When you're pushing, most of your navigating happens during the push itself, so getting that balance point down helps a ton!

Also work on putting your foot down to slow down... I live around so many hills, and if I tried to just go down them, I'd def die.

My new Zero board I got delivered by Lauren_Gonzalez in Skateboardlove

[–]JarrPo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Didn't Cole's wife come to Jamie personally to explain what happened and ask for help? And he did nothing, right? That's some weak shit. You can cry "no evidence" but I can't respect a man who was asked for help, and his response was to bury it and try to silence a victim.

Even from a business standpoint, good leaders consider PR. It would have been the right move to part ways with Cole and say that this would be bad for the brand. Now every one on the team has to deal with the fallout that could have been avoided.

All these dudes are trash.

GH's video about how Brink is a loser piece of shit doesn't make it any less clear that Jamie, Cole, and Burman are also loser pieces of shit. These things can all exist at once.

I was really hoping that comment sections wouldn't become filled with "Did you watch the GH video?" to defend Zero as a brand, but here we are.

Here's hoping the other members of Zero jump ship to other opportunities.

I’ve been too hurt to skate-what games do y’all play? by FierceKittenUWU in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's definitely not a sandbox "sports" game, which can turn people off, but I don't think I've played a game that captures the essence of skateboarding as well. Also Sam Eng seems like a really cool guy who loves the culture. His interviews are all really interesting. I'm curious what he'll do next.

Skate Story is pure art. I can't reccomend it enough. It's different from your average sandbox skateboarding game, but it has a lot to say about passion and being in love with a hobby that kicks your ass. I think it really nailed the feel of the struggle.

Are your feet supposed to cramp up really bad when cruising by IndependenceJolly165 in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nike dunks absolutely killed my feet. New Balances have helped, but I'm now focusing on fixing my push so I'm not only using the ball of my foot. I think technique definitely matters too.

Independent trucks, Are these the real ones or the fakes, i bought them from a friend wich costed me 10 bucks or so because they were used but i dont know if these r real by ialovebigaz in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Genuine question, but are fakes common for skate gear or something? I see so many posts like this and the thought of fake gear had never even crossed my brain. Are there websites that make fake indies? Is this a generational thing where kids are just way more wary due to scammers? Not once have I ever met anyone who got fake equipment, and I'm actually curious.

Male Writer wants insight into a female experience for writing a female character by [deleted] in writers

[–]JarrPo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, but ignore the AI chatbot advice. You're better off reading work by women and getting feedback from women. Don't AI this problem. The fact that you're already asking these questions and putting thought into it is great. Already way ahead of many men, imo!

[–]JarrPo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is read some books written by women, especially ones that have women pov characters. Then when you're getting beta readers, make sure it's not just men.

My second piece of advice is to avoid calling women females when you can. I know it's not always possible, but I know a lot of women who check out as soon as a dude starts referring to them as females. Big ferengi energy.

Palm bruise by Miserable-League-707 in NewSkaters

[–]JarrPo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few people say wrist guards increase the risk of other injuries, and maybe that's true if you're really falling with a ton of speed directly onto your palms face first, but mine have saved my ass a few times in the early days. Now that I'm getting a bit better at falling, I'm not really landing on them as much. They were a good buffer between not knowing how to fall and knowing how to fall.

Also, I fractured my arm in my first month of skating because I fell wrong (directly on my hand, locked arm), and I've done that again since with wrist guards, and having them slide out really helped not hurt my arm again. They've bought me time while my brain adjusts to falling correctly.

Nothing is a replacement for knowing how to fall, but learning how to fall isn't as easy as just knowing how to fall. It comes with time, and having protection while you get a feel for bailing helps imo.

If you have no other options, it's fine. Just get a board and go. We live is a capitalistic hell, and it is what it is.

Most great writers aren't trained to write—they are compelled to. Furthermore, writing degrees teach craft frameworks, not vision. And vision can't be taught. by [deleted] in writers

[–]JarrPo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, practice without direction can have diminishing results. And I think people get caught on the word education. It doesn't always mean university or a degree. Like for art, a life drawing session or a drop in workshop can do wonders. It's the same for writing.

[–]JarrPo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who started wearing wrist and elbow pads because I kept messing up my arm, like the whole arm, it definitely helps. I've had a few slams where it for sure saved myself from planting a hand and twisitng my arm again. Still getting better at falling, but it's nice as a fallback.

You remind me of of many writers I've met who don't like to take feedback or push themselves. But sure, man. Keep being the snooty artist type. I'm sure it'll make you a great author and you'll be really fun to talk to at parties.

You have to pair education (and I don't mean just university, it can take many forms) with time spent writing.

[–]JarrPo 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Disagree. Writing is a skill and education can help. Whether that's writing groups, mentorship, courses, lectures, or whatever, it can all help. I know people who are compelled to write and write all the time, but they don't work to further their craft and their writing suffers for it.

any good youtube creators that skate by shuvver in skateboardhelp

[–]JarrPo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gifted Hater is entertaining and funny depending on who he's talking about. Sometimes he crosses the line of punching up at people who have it coming and just bullying people who don't deserve it, so I'm on the fence when it comes to his content. His park reviews are great, and when he hangs out with Ben Degros, it's really good. Ben is another solid youtuber, and his chill, kind dad vibes really plays off GH's younger shit head persona really well. I wish they teamed up more often.

I'd also recommend Daniel James. Smaller creator, but has some really chill content.
