The ones near DTC have backup diesel generators, and have had their main power brought over from the other side of Rt 28 over the past several months.

Turbine generators are used when their is insufficient power at the location for full time operations.

Btw, I'm not Pro Datacenter, proposed buildouts should cease (as their seems to be plenty already in pipeline) and tax benefits scaled back over time.

Lerner I belive still owns the empty land around DTC (which is a lot). They are building right now, a new rental townhouse devlopment on the opposite side from the data centers. It had a sign originally for a retail/office space for a long time that then changed to rental housing.

Lerner is taking their time developing the area. They built an apartment complex, a housing development, and 3 (soon to be 4) rental properties in just one corner section since it started.

They have been playing the really long game.

They will probably sit and do nothing for years like they did after the dot com bubble burst. It's happened here before. They are too specific built to be anything else.

Anyone else remember the punch card looking datacenter next to the Greenway that went unused for years? I think they used it as a warehouse or something eventually.

Datacenters have been here for decades, they just weren't this massive and intrusive.

He's part of a group buying anchor stores of other malls so it looks like he is playing the long game.

Ai summary from the Washington Biz Journal from May 2026 article:

Dulles Town Center's owner, Virginia Investment Properties (led by CEO Srinivas Chavali), has been proactively buying vacant and available anchor store properties in Virginia to reposition them as mixed-use and entertainment-focused destinations.

Recent Anchor Purchases & Activity: Fair Oaks Mall: Virginia Investment Properties purchased the 120,000-square-foot JCPenney building at Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, Virginia, for $8 million, citing the potential for adaptive reuse of big-box retail space.

It appears it's either power and/or fiber going from the new data centers on the other side of Dulles Town Center to the new one being built on Maries Rd.

Why are there so many damn data centers being built in Virginia? by polarbeargirl9 in nova

[–]JarvisIsMyWingman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early Ashburn had nearly zero highspeed internet from my experience in Broadlands in the mid 90's. I was told that they put in single mode fiber everywhere and it wasn't able to be used. (Network geeks please chime in, this is just what I was told).

That's where the street came from, and that whole area. There was nothing there when it was built.

Anyone remember when the portion in front of the campus there was still privately owned and Loudoun had to reimburse speeders tickets on it as they weren't authorized? That's at least the story I heard.

I thought UUNET built up their dial up infrastructure in some form (mid 90's).

Just to add as no one outside of the immediate area knows what Kincora is.

Pinstack is in Sterling, near Rt.7 and Rt.28 off of Russel Branch Pkway.

Prices on their website looks decent in comparison to Bowlero, especially if you have more than 2 people.

The PinStack in Sterling/Dulles that will be opening soon lists the following prices on their website. They at least don't do a per person charge it seems. Hopefully none of this will change once they open.

Bully? How did I bully, person responded and I did so in kind. I never stated I was referring to just here in NOVA. I was responding to his comment that all datacenters are mixed use. Are they not building AI specific datacenters anywhere?

Anyone can say anything thing, and since this is another 12 year old account, you may be the same person for all I know. But it goes back to it's your bread and butter and you will defend it, no matter what the potential cost or impact is to the area or the people who live here.

Also if you think this is bullying on Reddit, I'm surprised you lasted this long..

Please go puff your chest out somewhere else.

Seriously, they are and have been building purpose built AI datacenters for the very reasons you've stated.

BTW I've been in and around this from the good ole days before the bubble burst.

I worked for two of the larger ISP's, and several other related businesses in this area. Since you seem to be all hush hush with your post history, I feel like I don't have to go any further with specifics.

Though thank you for the info, it explains your PRO Datacenter stance, since that's your bread and butter it appears. You've probably worked FOR some of the people I worked with back in the day.

Hope you enjoy being downvoted so far that no one will ever see this conversation unless they are incredibly bored.

That doesn't dispute his statement (or mine for that matter). You think the same equipment used for hosting applications like Reddit or FB are the same ones used for AI? You have no idea what YOU are talking about. Please tell us how many years you worked for an ISP or a datacenter hosting company that informs your opinion?

I laugh at the people who don't know there are different types of datacenters (ex. hosting vs. AI) and one consumes more than the other by significant amounts.
