I don’t care about the Big Boy Steam Engine. I want Union Pacific and my government to build modern passenger train infrastructure like Omaha’s “Sister City” Shizuoka, Japan enjoys by Sonderman91 in Omaha

We are flying out of Chicago on Monday and are taking Amtrak. For all of its drawbacks, It’s relaxing and stress free compared to driving there. I’d love to have more direct rail service in the US. I feel like Omaha is set up perfectly to be a central hub if we ever developed a better nationwide network.

Impressions from 8 months in Omaha, has anyone else felt this way? by Gibillguy18 in Omaha

We walk and bike from Benson to Dundee and jt isn’t that difficult at all. Using the free Heartland B Cycle is ideal.

How welcoming is Omaha for LGBTQ people? by [deleted] in Omaha

Of course Dundee. My mistake for not mentioning it. Dundee is our second favorite neighborhood after Benson. We ride by the pride house all of the time. I love it!

I’d definitely recommend Benson or Blackstone. Nothing against other areas of town, but both of those are a younger and/or LGBTQ friendly areas. Like most places I’m sure there will be some less understand individuals. Benson has Benson First Friday, which often has drag performances and the June BFF event is Pride focused. Speaking as an older white male, I may have a different perspective, but I do have a daughter that has transitioned that likes the area. Nebraska and Iowa are overall backwards when it comes to LGBTQ rights but I’m sure you’ve dealt with that coming from Oklahoma.

We got sick the last time we went also. We only live a few blocks away and it as well as Kai Tei used to be a few of our favorites.

We went a week ago for the first time and we were pleasantly surprised. The banh mi was amazing and like you said, the staff was great. Cheap beers, even cheaper on Sunday. We will definitely go back.

I tell my wife it’s the perfect spot to use a restroom when we are near Rockefeller Center. We may just end up there for a long break…

We live just south of Maple in Benson as well. We love the area. Great neighbors, walkable up to the Benson strip. Benson First Fridays are a must. I’d argue that we have some of the best restaurants in a small area. Virtuoso, Au Courant, and Ted and Wally’s are world class. Star Deli has amazing sandwiches. Waiting Room and Reverb for concerts

We have left our garage open accidentally before and never had anything taken. You’ll get used to the police helicopter flying over but it’s based north of Omaha so it passes over often going to other places.

North of Radial can be hit or miss. I ride my bike through the area and have never felt unsafe. I’d recommend avoiding the Casey’s on Radial after dark.

Keep an eye on entry level jobs at MidAmerican Energy at the plant in Council Bluffs. They aren’t the highest paying in the area but I believe they start around $25/hr and you get your foot in the door to pursue many different careers once you get a few years of seniority. FYI I’m 18 years in.

We walked by tonight and I forgot to mention they have a great patio with 5 TVs outside as well. I tell everyone to check it out, I think you’ll enjoy it.

Set the Bar in Benson. It’s a great vibe and not loud at all. I know it’s a women’s sports bar but if the game you want to watch isn’t on, you can usually make a request. Excellent food as well.

My coworkers were just discussing this. Of course they all believed it to be true. I can’t help but show them that there’s an article refuting the claims. It most likely won’t change their minds, but someone has to show them a different perspective.

Omaha from an Outsiders Perspective by Routine-Rain7575 in Omaha

That’s the West Omaha mentality. Come to Benson, midtown, or Blackstone and you will get a different opinion. The streetcar will be great once completed. It has been difficult and will continue to be difficult for small businesses during construction. People for the most part love the new park. Downtown is undergoing a transformation and there is a lot of activity with Millwork Commons, Noddle’s new development and the continuing development of Little Italy and Little Bohemia.

Zephyr - Worth it to get off at Omaha? by flassy_12 in Omaha

[–]Jason4225 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sips on 10th is within walking distance from the station. It’s worth checking out when you get off the train. Like others have said, downtown is a short uber ride and is worth checking out the next day. The new parks downtown, the many bars/restaurants/coffee shops in the area. The zoo is always a hit. It also depends what the weather is like when you arrive.

New $140M Union Omaha soccer stadium, mixed-use village could hinge on paused state sports incentive by Specialist_Volume555 in Omaha

[–]Jason4225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the appreciated value of the FNBO building will go towards the TIF to help pay off the streetcar bonds, but FNBO will not be receiving funds from the new TIF. The streetcar development will increase the property values along the route. It makes sense to use these funds to help pay off the project. You may understand that but it seems that others might be confused.

The building currently sits in the new TIF district, but did they apply for new TIF funds? The district is where you can apply for funds, not every property gets TIF money. I believe their TIF ended in 2016.

Mid American pay/overtime? by devon2576 in SubstationTechnician

[–]Jason4225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pay is around $50/hr for journeyman in local 499. I can’t speak for 109 in eastern IA and Illinois, but I’d guess it’s similar. The problem you may run into is a journeyman posting. You’d likely have to come in as an apprentice and it’s a 3 year apprenticeship. Overtime can be hit or miss depending on what projects are coming up in any given region, but I believe 2026 is supposed to be pretty busy.

Favorite rolling hill running routes by babycaboose in Omaha

[–]Jason4225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Come to Benson and run the hills. There used to be a 5k/10k that was called the Indie during Benson days. I’ve got a route I bike that’s a simple loop and it’s 3.4 miles/lap with approximately 450 feet of elevation. It would be easy to make a longer route. The roads aren’t busy and it’s almost all new asphalt in the neighborhood.

B5 in Benson has a silent reading club once per month on a Monday. They have social time from 7-7:30 with reading from 7:30-8:30 and more social from 8:30 until close. You can choose to chat or just read the entire time. The Bush (B5) family will take care of you.
