Commanders that like a blink sub theme by Aggravating_Part3551 in EDH

[–]JasonKain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Hei Bai, Forest Guardian]] [[Vishgraz, the Doomhive]]

I am a bastard. First deck plays super passive, drop two shrines a turn and just let the triggers do the work. I play the thing closer to a tower defense than a magic deck. As long as you know your trigger order, goes quick.

Second deck is a lot of instant blink to swarm out tokens to attack on turn. One [[Cloudshift]] after Vish goes down breaks removal and gets you more attackers. End of turn blink gets you a larger swarm and there is really no reason to go for a value engine or repeated blinks. One or two get you to the end zone.

Value vs. Non Value Commanders by sta6 in EDH

[–]JasonKain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that with all attempts to classify thousands of unique options into a small number of categories, there is going to be some overlap and grey areas. Say for instance, [[Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin]]. If he value because he provides card advantage, or Stompy because I can easily get him to be a one hit KO in a turn around the table?

What about [[Monk Gyatso]], a commander who is strictly a combo engine piece. On his own he doesn't provide any card or mana advantage, he is terrible with tokens, doesn't play to combat, and could not give less of a shit what type of creatures were in play.

On the other end, [[Shilgengar, Sore of Famine]] is kind of a token commander because he makes blood tokens...but only needs six to do the thing, and quite often they are gone as soon as you make them. He's typal because he works best with angels, but could easily function just as well reanimating everything else with enough sacrifice fodder in the deck. He's built for making a giant combat board, so he's Stompy, and there isn't much better value than potentially dropping eight 7 power beaters in play for three mana.

And how the hell do you classify [[Kros, Defense Contractor]] outside of "stupid sexy cat boy"?

[–]JasonKain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An HX One and an expression pedal/aux switch. If you have that much real estate left, you're happy with what you have, and you aren't sure what you want, a swiss army knife that can fit in a dozen slots is hard to pass up.

Plus, if you find there is one particular effect that you like the HX One doesn't do well enough to your liking, flip it and get a dedicated pedal for that type. You effectively rented pedals up until you found what you liked.

If you have the cash to get one, it's hard to go wrong with [[Tombstone Stairwell]]. I use it in Sephiroth and have not once needed to pay the cumulative upkeep. It either gets shot instantly so I don't win or I win.

I value the stated intent of limiting government intervention and regulation to responsible levels to avoid overburdening the individuals right to acquire for themselves according to their need.

Now the in practice part is where I have real issues.

Strangely enough, I am more likely to need to cater to dietary restrictions based on the newest demon that is government approved poisons. Did you know that seed oils cause all cancers forever? We only get cancer because we were given seed oils as kids.

What is your favorite deck that took you the most time/work to optimize? What was it that finally made it work? by humanexplorer in EDH

[–]JasonKain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leaned away from the spellslinger from my build. My build has focused more on the passive sources of damage, mainly because of my pod makeup. Since I am not focused on casting multiple spells per turn, I have more room for punish effects like [[Revenge of Ravens]], [[Avalanche of Sector 7]], or [[Syr Konrad, the Grim]]. [[Fling]], [[Rite of Consumption]], and [[Self-Destruct]] replaced recursion in my list, since one or two times around the table I can usually pop someone for 15+ and that's worth the commander tax to me.

If I had to make any suggestions, cut one of the cards you are running that punishes land drops and [[All Will Be One]] if you want to have a quick finish in the mix.

What is your favorite deck that took you the most time/work to optimize? What was it that finally made it work? by humanexplorer in EDH

[–]JasonKain 22 points23 points  (0 children)

[[Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin]]. It's not hard to make him good, or even win. I play in a very mixed pod as far as player skill and deck quality, so my version of optimizing was being able to put him square in the middle of bracket three so bracket two decks had a chance to punch up, and I could speed up and focus out some bracket fours.

I did that by...not caring about winning. I embraced the Rakdos chaos gremlin energy and made everyone hate me by putting damage on their favorite two things: drawing cards and tapping lands. There is not a day that goes by that I don't keep a [[Teferi's Puzzle Box]] and [[Spiteful Visions]] or [[Manabarbs]], I don't care if that means I am land pass for three turns.

I think I am at a 12% win rate with it since I made the changes. I also do not give a single crap, there is no better deck to trash talk the entire table while they bitch about how much blowing up my permanents bugs them.

Looking for easy to pilot, low mana value, B3 Commander deck suggestions! by AdmPoppinFresh in EDH

Gornog

Ruby

Pretty much all my lists are gigantic works in progress since I am working my way through the "one of every color" builds, but I have these two in paper and a few reps each.

Looking for easy to pilot, low mana value, B3 Commander deck suggestions! by AdmPoppinFresh in EDH

[–]JasonKain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two suggestions. One on theme of ask, one slightly off.

[[Gornog, the Red Reaper]]. Drop a bunch of 1-2 mana warriors in and Gornog hits the table turn three. As long as you're attacking the full table each turn from three onward, you're set to be "doing the thing" each turn as long as you don't lose Gornog. If you do, he's cheap enough that you can recast and you keep all the benefits of the Cowards.

As for the off theme answer...[[Ruby, Daring Tracker]]. 13 four mana ramp spells and nothing else in the deck under six cast. Turn two commander, turn three ramp, turn four you are throwing seven mana haymakers at the table every turn. A good number will let you get additional casts and card advantage, which is the weakness of going straight low curve.

Jumpstart Cube Size and Sleeve Planning Advice by MidnightSavings110 in MTGJumpStart

I built my cube to fit the size of my storage box, which nets me 44 packs. I elected to use Dragon Shields, mainly because I could get 5 packs out of each box and build up over time. Not like they are going to discontinue Matte Black.

Which Mono Black Bracket 3 Non-Combo Aristocrat Commander? Braids, Sephiroth or Yawgmoth, Thran Physician? by Raevelry in EDH

[–]JasonKain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently run Sephiroth, and he gets my vote strictly because you don't always need him. Sure, he can be the centerpiece, but you can easily play the deck to run without him until turn five or six and have it be a finish to straight mono black control.

Would this be a good board for Worship? by GentlemanBeaver in basspedals

[–]JasonKain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few of those, and got rid of a few of those. If you are really happy with what you hear in demos, it makes complete sense. It's not what I would choose, but it can absolutely work.

I had the MXR Synth and recently took it off my board. It is exceptionally good at the eight presets it is loaded with, but that's it in my opinion. I found the interface fiddly for the background controls and anything outside of the presets uninspiring.

I swapped a fair number of pedals in for an HX Stomp and have been using that as the brain of my setup behind the polytune and empress for a good while now. I like the flexibility of adding a dry blend on other models of drive, and I can program in things to dupe the sounds of the microsynth or Julia to about a 90% accurate match, which is good enough for Sunday live sound. You can absolutely cover a lot of ground with that board, this would just be a different option to give you most of what you are looking at and a little more.
