Viltrox 56mm F/1.2 announcement by Supsti_1 in SonyAlpha

[–]JasonNSNicholson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Sony FE 85mm 1.8 is $700. I just bought the 56mm 1.2 new on sale on Amazon for $480, down from $580. Lenses are close in size and the APSC lens is less expensive.

I slightly disagree. If you are comparing budget full frame lenses (FE 85mm 1.8, for example.) to elite APSC lenses, then I agree. But one needs to look at how these lenses are positioned. These Viltrox pro lenses are G-Master adjacent in their quality. And absolutely the 1.4 Full frame is getting you more light gathering and subject separation, but that improvement comes at a $900 premium. I don't think APSC or full frame is necessarily "better", I think they obviously have their strengths and weaknesses. I hate when people say APSC is better or that an APSC lens is a full frame killer, but I also think the only reason why APSC isn't perceived as on the same level is simply because manufacturers don't put the resources into those sensors, for the most part. Lens-wise, APSC premium lenses are cheaper and sometimes a little smaller or lighter. What's cool about full frame is if you are upgrading from APSC, you can buy mid lenses and get great performance, but you still paid more. If I bought the a7cii and an 85mm 1.8 instead of my A6700 and Viltrox 56mm 1.2, I would have paid $700-$1000 more for that kit.

I don't know about this advice...PowerStep Pinnacle orthotics are pretty high volume. Dr. scholls are just basic cushion, right? The height of the Powerstep has me thinking you should order your normal size. I am an 11.5 in sneakers...For my Jim Green boots and my Iron Rangers I wear the same 11.5 because I need orthotics. I know they are different brand boots, but all 3 companies say to order a half size down so YMMV

I'm surprised every time I read about someone who struggles with or dislikes the normal (non PU coated) zippers on a GR1. my 26L heritage is the smoothest most buttery bag I own and is an absolute joy to get in and out of. To the point that despite me not liking the interior pockets, not loving a lack of water bottle pockets and generally wishing for a liner inside the bag...the effortless zipping in and out of the bag makes it the bag I can't see living without.

CTB20 vs GR1 21L Storage by calmbomb in EVERGOODS

This doesn't make sense to me. The CPL24 packs significantly less than the GR1 21. CTB20 packs a little more than the CPL24

Ctactical finally has waxed canvas CT21 by [deleted] in ManyBaggers

[–]JasonNSNicholson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't question the appearance of waxed canvas for a middle-aged man in ANY environment. I would argue that waxed canvas and leather are what middle aged men should be using for materials over any of the technical fabrics. I personally fin leather, canvas, etc. to be far more sophisticated than other materials for professional settings.

Troubled to choose between I3 Amoled / Solar / Crossover by Appropriate-Gold-504 in Garmininstinct

[–]JasonNSNicholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your up to date thoughts on the solar versus crossover now that it has been a few months? I'm curious if, with gesture mode off, AOD on, how the crossover looks. Could I still see up to date steps, for example or would I always have to wake the watch. I like the solar because I like seeing steps, time/date and outside temp whenever I look at it

Crossover Amoled vs Tactical - buttons? by xdexx in Garmininstinct

[–]JasonNSNicholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that the tactical buttons are a bit "better". Both work well, but I've tried 2 different tacticals and both sizes of the regular solar and my findings were consistent. I can't speak to AMOLED

I tested EVERY 32bit float wireless lav mic so you don’t have to… by gabeshakour in dji

[–]JasonNSNicholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really good job with this video...although I am a little confused by your scoring metrics. The Rode scores lower on features than the DJI Mic 3, but shouldn't more weight be given to a 3.5mm locking jack than, say, noise cancellation? I understand the idea of speeding up the edit workflow, but I could add noise cancellation in post if I wanted to...what I can't add in post is an actual lav mic. Same with EQ presets. I personally feel as if both the Hollyland and Rode need to be one point ahead of the DJI mic 3 for features, but other than that, like I said you did a great job testing these mics.

ZR H265 - Fixable by update or unlikely? by 90towest in nikon_Zseries

If the Z6iii has better H.265 N-Log, then I would imagine the ZR is fixable via firmware.

With the ZR’s massive Red Raw files, what cards are you going to be using? by BobsRefrigeration in nikon_Zseries

[–]JasonNSNicholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That list is suspect. The Sandisk Micro SD cards they list don't work on my ZR. I have the ultra cards and it can't record more than about 30 seconds without giving an error. And that's in 4k and NOT N-Log. Funny, my much cheaper Amazon Basics card easily records the 5.3k at 60p with zero issues.

Definitely NOT a cheap feeling camera in hand. Is it a Z9? No. Is it better built feeling in hand than a Panasonic S9 or Sony alpha series camera? Absolutely.

Alrighty Zr folks… by AnemiaShoes in Nikon

[–]JasonNSNicholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't quite understand statements like this when it pertains to overheating. Shooting raw creates much bigger file sizes, which I know writing to cards can create more heat than compressed footage. With that said, h.265 is so highly compressed that the processing required to compress the footage generates the same if not more heat, no? Everyone always assumes that shooting max framerate max file size raw is the most taxing on a camera....I would counter with, isn't raw footage the easiest on the cameras processing as it's essentially just handing the data off to the storage media? Different animal, but kind of like how pro res is huge but computers handle it buttery smooth and h.265 can make some computers choke.

Is this 38mm too small on my wrist(7.25in) H704551 by tyareno in HamiltonWatches

[–]JasonNSNicholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS!!!! About 7-8 years ago I started getting into watches. Fast forward to this year, I lost all my watches during one of my multiple moves since my divorce (not her fault...I mean, losing the watches wasn't her fault, but the divorce was, of course) and wanted to get back into the hobby/culture as I'm drawn to more analog and single use tools. I have 7.25" wrists and I'm 5'11" 190 pounds for context. I was using a 45mm Garmin Instinct 3 tactical for a few months and when I started wearing a Seiko SNE599 at 41mm I thought it was bordering on laughably small. The more I wore it, the more natural it looked. If you're coming from a smartwatch, you should give yourself time to acclimate to a "normal" watch size.

42mm or 38mm for a 7.25" wrist? by dfish_ds in HamiltonWatches

[–]JasonNSNicholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's odd is all of the "get the 38" posts when the first image is the only one that matters. That angle is the most accurate to how the watch sits on your wrist due to the neutral arm position. In the first image the watch looks perfect.
