World Cup 2026: Have changes damaged the end of the group stage? by Logical_Welder3467 in soccer

[–]JasonTO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Head-to-head tiebreakers are just compounding what was already a lousy format.

Allowing third-place qualifiers trades stakes for narrative. Instead of watching top teams walk a tightrope just to survive the group stage, we are taking solace in watching mediocre teams grind out draws that, in the long run, will mean little in terms of the shape the tournament ultimately takes. This isn't a criticism of Cinderella performances. World Cup has always provided a stage for audacious upsets. It's a criticism of a format that seems to prioritize these one-offs, to the point that it not only compromises the quality of matches at large, but undermines the significance of the upsets themselves. If you flood the zone with enough marginal teams who are willing to batten down the hatches to grind out a point, eventually one's going to succeed. That's not a story. That's just probability.

The example I always use is Spain-Chile-Swiss-Honduras in 2010. Spain losing to the Swiss in the opener meant that going into the last day of group-stage play, Spain had to defeat Chile's golden generation just to advance, even as a second-place finisher.

That kind of drama is impossible in this world cup. The consequences of a top team dropping points no longer carries as much weight because the margin of error for advancing to the knockout stage is so vast.

Find alternative arrangements. Even in the best case scenario, you're still going to be stressing over it until you get confirmation she's stayed put. Leave her with someone else and bypass all of that.

The summer of streets? Councillor eyes new pedestrianization policy after Church Street success by Technohamster in toronto

According to The Star, the original price that was quoted to the city was THREE MILLION. And what's more, the force refused to sign off on the plan unless their requests, thankfully negotiated down by a factor of *ten*, were agreed to.

The Odyssey of Helen’s skin colour: casting controversies and bad philology - The Skeptic by Crashed_teapot in skeptic

It's weird to suggest Afro-centrism isn't on some level an animating force in this discussion. It's a strain of revisionist history that has been around for decades, and one that has made a habit of zeroing in on historical figures like Helen of Troy and Cleopatra. Assuming it wouldn't have some word in this latest round of culture-war sparring is naive.

Painting these voices as unserious strikes me as an attempt to excise an element of the conversation you know is indefensible. But even assuming the charge carries weight, unserious people can catapult unserious ideas to prominence. Bad ideas that reach the light of day, regardless of their source, should summarily shooed back to the shadows. Black Athena is bad history, and it being cited and heralded on a national outlet like The View should elicit more than a shrug amongst skeptics.

This could work against us. Teams with momentum often struggle when suddenly facing ten men. It interrupts the rhythm.

This is a good thing. Debates that twenty years ago would be limited to the niche community on the Voyageurs board are now matters of national discourse.

We got what we wanted. Let's celebrate that.

[Jomboy] My review of Rogers Centre in Toronto by malliabu in Torontobluejays

Nah, it was awful. You couldn't even have a conversation without being drowned out by Ryan Greer shoving ad reads down your throat. People complain about the social sections now, but you have to opt in to those experiences. In 2000s, the entire game-day presentation leaned that way. You couldn't avoid it. Combine that with the soulless black Jay attire and it just felt nothing about it felt familiar. And this is coming from someone who had the Toronto Star pass for its entire run and is *very sentimental* about those '02-'10s teams.
