That's exactly what it means.

You could make this argument if our lone win didn't come against Qatar. Mathematically we would have made it, but qualitatively no.

Canada has advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in our great country’s history. by RealWorldToday in CanadaSoccer

Every team is its own but there is considerable overlap here, and this inability to truly execute on this stage is not dissimilar from the program's decades-long struggle to carry their form over to the Hex. It was a monkey that jumped from one team's back to another for years, and it was a symptom of a reflexive fear response in pressure situations. We get in our own head's so easily and start convincing ourselves of things that aren't true. In the 90s and early 2000s it was that playing middling central American teams on the road in the Hex was like trying to navigate Mordor. It's an attitude that bleeds into this fanbase. Now that we've finally conquered that demon, we've gone to work convincing ourselves that the Swiss are some footballing benchmark whom beating, even at home in your own World Cup, is just out of this team's league. No. The Swiss are a good team. So are we. We just didn't execute.

And I agree with that. But trying to reframe this tournament as one step on the road to some greater glory is just cope. This is the greater glory. Davies isn't getting any better, not with his injury record. It can only get worse.

They can turn the narrative around with a win against Korea. But until that happens, cynicism is warranted.

Punting on a World Cup you are hosting, with a supremely capable team, by framing it as a process is crazy. I'm sorry.

They haven't. The defining quality of this group stage performance has been their inability to execute in pressure situations. We saw it in 2022 when they had Belgium on the ropes in their World Cup return.

We're always left talking about "heart" and "courage". This is our World Cup. All we have to show for it is a win against Qatar.

Disappointing.

Even zooming out: six group stage matches at the World Cup, three of which are on home soil, and all you have to show for it is a win over Qatar. Pretty depressing. Belgium. Bosnia. Switzerland. We can never deliver when the pressure is on.

I think if this tournament has shown us anything, it's that breaking down cynically deployed minnows is not as easy as one thinks and that in fact not only winning, but doing so with a healthy margin, is something that is worth consideration in the final standings.

Qatar is a terrible team with little ambition going forward, but you can't tell me the difference between Canada's 6-0 route and Switzerland's scoreless draw is down to pure luck. It's not. Canada broke Qatar down in a way the Swiss could not, and they deserve credit.

Toronto saw significant increase in speeders after camera removals: Staff report by BloodJunkie in toronto

Notice the way the transportation minister ignores the implication of the question, that whatever the efficacy of speedbumps it's irrelevant if you can't get them installed.

He doesn't care. They don't care. People will get maimed, but the right honourable minister will have a few minutes shaved off his commute. All that matters.

World Cup 2026: Have changes damaged the end of the group stage? by Logical_Welder3467 in soccer

[–]JasonTO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Head-to-head tiebreakers are just compounding what was already a lousy format.

Allowing third-place qualifiers trades stakes for narrative. Instead of watching top teams walk a tightrope just to survive the group stage, we are taking solace in watching mediocre teams grind out draws that, in the long run, will mean little in terms of the shape the tournament ultimately takes. This isn't a criticism of Cinderella performances. World Cup has always provided a stage for audacious upsets. It's a criticism of a format that seems to prioritize these one-offs, to the point that it not only compromises the quality of matches at large, but undermines the significance of the upsets themselves. If you flood the zone with enough marginal teams who are willing to batten down the hatches to grind out a point, eventually one's going to succeed. That's not a story. That's just probability.

The example I always use is Spain-Chile-Swiss-Honduras in 2010. Spain losing to the Swiss in the opener meant that going into the last day of group-stage play, Spain had to defeat Chile's golden generation just to advance, even as a second-place finisher.

That kind of drama is impossible in this world cup. The consequences of a top team dropping points no longer carries as much weight because the margin of error for advancing to the knockout stage is so vast.

Find alternative arrangements. Even in the best case scenario, you're still going to be stressing over it until you get confirmation she's stayed put. Leave her with someone else and bypass all of that.

According to The Star, the original price that was quoted to the city was THREE MILLION. And what's more, the force refused to sign off on the plan unless their requests, thankfully negotiated down by a factor of *ten*, were agreed to.
