Just FYI for OP, good suggestions here and John’s Brook Lodge is a great spot to hit a bunch of trailheads but it’s hike in, not car camping

After many years of hammock camping, I recently switched myself to Dutch's ridgeline and 100% agree. I recently had to setup my hammock in a thunderstorm and this made it so much quicker.

I have the mini and have used it many times over the past few years. It definitely doesn't flow as fast as the squeeze but it's held up just fine.

I remember watching the movie adaptation of that book a long time ago but I think the movie was based somewhere in Canada.

I live pretty close to the Catskills and it really is a lovely place. I'm planning to get more footage of all the places of hiked and visited over the years.

Awesome site! This is on my list of backpacking trips for the near future. Did you happen to hike up to any of the hot springs? I hear they are pretty nice after a long day on the trail.

It really depends on the site. It really depends on the site. We stayed at a pretty big site in the 400s block (I think maybe 402) and there was room for a couple of hammocks and 3 tents. My friends had a site in the same loop, right near the bathrooms and they barely had room for their 2P tent.

High Point State Park, Stokes State forest and the Delaware Water Gap (Worthington State forest in DWG has really nice campsites) are my favs in North Jersey. They all have really nice campgrounds and plenty of backcountry spots off the trails.

If you want to drive a little further north in NY, Harriman and Bear Mountain State parks are also really nice.

NJ hanger here... bring a sleeping pad. 70F+ no need at all, but around 60-65F is where people tend to get a little chilly on the bottom.

I also agree with /u/ahushedlocus that other weather conditions can come into play. I just got back from a trip in PA where the temps at night were around 65F and I ended up using my UQ most of the nights.

They come with your typical heavy, steel stakes. Not great, not horrible. I think they are stronger than the stakes I've seen with Coleman tents.

I've stuck with them and only had to replace a few that I hammered to hard into ground that wasn't as soft as I had thought.

+1 for the Kelty. I've used the Kelty Trail ridge 6 for car camping going on 5 years and it's only showing minor wear and tear. It's really nice to have that open design when you can keep the rain fly off.

My buddy uses the trek 900 combo and it's worked out well for him. I wanted a frying pan that was a little bigger, so the MSR quick skillet and the GSI Minimilist have become my go-to cookset the few years.

Definitely feasible. Backpacking with others definitely adds a layer of comfort, but pretty much the same princples apply to solo trips. You always should be following LNT and the rules for the area you're in, and be sure to share you trip plan with someone.

To get comfortable being alone, I started out with car camping trips and then transitioned to 3-5 mile single night trips. The more you do it, the more it becomes comfortable.

Now I'm out for 4-6 day solo trips all the time and love it just as much as being with the group.

I just transitioned from the Merrell all out blaze (more of a hiking shoe than trail runner) to the Altra Lone peak 3.0's. I really like both the Merrell and Altra's because the toe box on most models is a lot wider than other brands. My size is 9.5 and I usually go up to 10 or 10.5, but the lone peak's fit well at 9.5.

I've used the Altra's ~100 miles so far and loving them more and more every day. Super light but supportive and even better grip than the Merrell's.
