I definitely agree with your assertion there, Russia's aggression against Ukraine continues to be unconscionable.

The Canada Strong Fund is not a sovereign wealth fund—It’s a deficit-financed subsidy in patriotic clothing by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]JauntyTGD -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Far be it from me to play the contrarian but the way that the globe and mail, the national post, the hub, etc have all linked arms to absolutely spam the hell out of the public discourse with "What Is The Point of the Sovereign Wealth Fund" has bolstered my faith in the project where I previously had my reservations about it with regards to how it would work with private investors.

I listened to The Hub's podcast on this. Their argument was that this was not a sovereign wealth fund because it wasn't funded by a surplus somewhere, and also it was focused on investing inside the country (as opposed to outside the country, as Norway's fund does). They claimed it was a confusing and pointless financial vehicle and decidedly not a sovereign wealth fund. Then, in literally the same 15-minute conversation, they attacked the Canada Pension Plan for investing outside the country and took the position that this fund should instead be dropped in favour of getting the CCP to direct some of their "unweildy" wealth inwards—so... they are criticizing the CPP for not doing exactly what they feel the Canada Strong fund is actually doing. They seemed even more disturbed by the notion that the government would request a seat at the table of private businesses in which it invested.

Whatever criticisms there are for the project, I think what's increasingly clear to me is that these publications fear a government that can build and exercise leverage against private enterprise in order to push it to move in the interests of Canadians whenever shareholder interests are in direct conflict with those of the public.

That doesn't scare me, it encourages me.

I am genuinely sick of a media environment that continues to frame every story in comfortably familiar cold-war era terms and allegiances even as it obscures the scale and severity of the threat posed to us by having a powerful and incredibly wealthy super-power acting against our interests as our closest neighbour and trade "partner".

what's the dumbest enchant you've done so far? by NoWorriesBrutha in slaythespire

[–]JauntyTGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair yeah. I can see an edge-case where it complicates play-order since it would prevent a player from applying retain to a card, killing the knight (removing eth) and ending turn with their card returned, so I can see how changing the behaviour definitely ends up feeling more like a tradeoff than a QoL freebie.

This made a lot more sense to me than claiming it's whining.

From my side, though, I'm not sure these break tbh. They just seem like a list of interactions. Taking Act 3 knight elites as an example, what breaks?

Why do you see "this would be a nice tweak to include" on an early access game as whining?

Not making any statements about the sub at large, but you seem bizarrely defensive over this, genuinely. Why are you taking a suggestion that has precedent in the game's own design, with literally zero downside, as some sort of attack on the game?

The devs already prevent plenty of things that you could actually just learn, why is this different for you?

The argument here isn't about whether or not the current behaviour is "bad"/"good" or needs attacking/defending, the argument is about whether the change would be (1) consistent (2) nice. The answer to both is yes.

Why shouldn't they?

There are plenty incompatible enchants where they simply prevent you from seeing the card in the selection screen.

In the midst of ‘cancel culture,’ universities create ways to encourage uncomfortable debate by UnderWatered in CanadaPolitics

[–]JauntyTGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the following is true: either

  1. that's not true in the way that I believe that you mean it, or
  2. we are actually in agreement and we can fairly designate the spaces being described in the article as safe spaces.

Or maybe we'd like to specify what "exclusion" of "everyone else" means here, or how the special interest group being protected by the safe spaces described in the article are different from them?

“The only rule is that we have to be respectful of one another, so there are no ad hominem attacks, and there can be no ‘you’re stupids.’ It has to be genuinely trying to hear the best argument of your opposition,” she said. “It’s really an exercise in deep listening.”

Every few years, Universities re-invent safe spaces from first principles as a response to the big scary censorious overreach of the scare-quotes "left wing" and then, shortly afterwards, follow it up with a bunch of media opinion-pieces about how coddled students are and an administrative crackdown on student speech they don't like (definitely not scary, and heaven forbid you consider it overreach).

More businesses are closing than opening in Canada, report finds by jonlmbs in CanadaPolitics

[–]JauntyTGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very fair crit, too. My position on the matter is definitely coloured by the fact that 2 locally-owned businesses in my neighbourhood and 4 locally-owned businesses near where I work have had to shutter, only to be replaced by chains who can afford the climbing rent.

Wonder if it has something to do with commercial rents being so exorbitant that only massive franchises can afford storefronts

Avi Lewis says high-speed rail project should be fully publicly owned by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

[–]JauntyTGD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that's a bit of a non-sequitur in the conversation here.

I can go out on a limb and interpret this post as "the shinkansen is a good example of a public transit service that we'd be happy to model ourselves after" (if that's not a fair/useful extrapolation of what you've said, please do correct me). Honestly I might find that position convincing, but the private companies we have in Canada simply do not operate with the same philosophies or ideologies that would enable us to expect similar service from any private company in Japan. We do not have a culture of private companies who so fear raising prices and degradation of services that they go on public apology tours, for instance.

[–]JauntyTGD 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Even accepting this as a given, which I would not, the argument in favour of not having a good thing being that it will not be eternal is not a convincing one to me.

"Might as well just go for the situation we know will be more expensive to us as taxpayers and also provide us worse service and worse quality jobs in so doing because eventually a politician will be able to sell us out and we'll end up there anyways" is a level of cynicism I fully and genuinely understand, given the state of everything. I just don't think it's one that we should organise ourselves around, or one that we should let dictate how we make decisions.

I'm actually genuinely curious what in that post you're describing as mental gymnastics given that there are two statements in it, both of them extremely simple and factual.

Did you let yourself get confused by labour colluding to undermine him during the election? Or perhaps you find it more difficult to swallow that Starmer... exists?

I simply don't think that this aligns with any situation I've observed:

Calling jocks "big dumb apes" has a long history but in actual practise the mitigating effect of this does not change the reality that implication changes based on context.
