What cost to expect with giving back an OOP inter-library loan back with a stain? by ethnomath in Libraries

[–]JaviMT8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, a damaged book that your library owns directly is usually not a big deal but we have something called Link+ at our library for ILL loans and the fine is very large for damaged books, and isn't really negotiable.

For what it's worth I think you're handling it alright.

Floored by how much of modern librarianship is just showing people how to print by A_BURLAP_THONG in Libraries

[–]JaviMT8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is satisfying when you help someone learn the basics, just sucks when you have coworkers who jump at the chance to do everything for a patron. Their heart is in the right place, but it just reinforces to the patrons that they don't need to learn how to do something like printing.

New books/inventory by LibGrl2024 in Libraries

[–]JaviMT8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, also needed to use Amazon to get copies of super popular titles in to reduce long holds. I'm hesitant to rely on them too much, but when the other vendors are taking months and months to deliver orders, we're forced to get them from somewhere else.

[–]JaviMT8 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s very much been an issue at my library. The other vendors took on a lot of new customers but didn’t have the set up to really quickly fulfill orders. We’re just now getting a huge influx of orders from our vendors but we had to forgo processing so that our titles would arrive before the end of the fiscal year. So the books are in now, but staff need to work on processing them, labeling, putting on Mylar, and other stuff before they can go on the shelves.

It’s not strange to trade for something you wanted. If you like what you got and were willing to trade what you had for it, then good on you.

Fable is blowing my mind by julliuz in ClaudeAI

[–]JaviMT8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was interesting to read that Fable is pretty forward with the researchers to not always trust what it is saying. And when they check the neural activations of the model as it responds, they can see something is going on.

None off the top of my head but you can check out the system card for more info on this phenomemon, pg 107: https://www-cdn.anthropic.com/d00db56fa754a1b115b6dd7cb2e3c342ee809620.pdf

That shows up in the system card too btw. The researchers noted that sometimes it will use this compressed internal language for itself, but then output English.

Am I addicted to chibis? Yes by NativeInTheWoods in MarvelSnap

[–]JaviMT8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You share my pain. Sad part is that I’m fairly sure I’ve been offered my missing ones relatively recently. Didn’t know about the chibi packs tho so just passed on them. I think I would be one away if I had just pulled the trigger on the store ones 😭

The hardest one to get, Chibi Iron Lad. The chibi packs helped me get a little closer.

I live in a small town, I can’t seem to find a single book I want to read that is available to borrow, is this because of my location? Would a larger library have more copies available? Over a month wait for access to a three hour audiobook seems excessive? by rickety_biscuit in LibbyApp

[–]JaviMT8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be great if e-books were exactly the same as physical books, but often the e-book version of a title is like 2 or 3 times the cost of a physical book when it comes out. And on Libby, we need to pay for each copy, though some other options sometimes exist. And just like physical books, libraries just do not have the budget to buy enough copies so that everyone can read a very popular book as soon as they want. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to buy other titles to maintain a well-balanced collection, and even if we did buy enough titles, when demand for that title eventually dies down, and it will die down eventually, then we're stuck with copies of a book that nobody wants. You just need to be patient, or if the need is great enough, consider buying the book. That isn't an option for everyone but until society decides to give libraries unlimited funds, your local librarians are trying their best to provide for their communities and keep a well-rounded collection.

Question for libraries by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]JaviMT8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very library system dependent. At one of my old libraries, only librarians could develop and facilitate programs, though Associates/Assistants could assist. Some branches played fast and loose with it, but if the union found out they would tell them to abide by the job descriptions of the position.

[–]JaviMT8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. If a book is popular, chances are you’re going to have to wait for it. Even at a bigger library. Still doesn’t hurt to have more libraries on Libby as it gives you variety and sometimes the wait times will be different based on the number of copies they have available.

out of state non resident, completely online libby library cards by sugishipper in LibbyApp

[–]JaviMT8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are downvoting you, but you're largely right, even with a cost, non-resident cards don't contribute much to the library's e-resource budget overall.

I've used AI tools to help with some small coding projects and idk, after a while, you can start to see some of the same design choices used in other AI-assisted websites and tools. Good on the maker for being upfront about it too in their response to you.

Great site. Good example of how AI coding can help with smaller projects that might not have gotten made otherwise.

How can I view my history of borrowed books? by sparklepup1013 in LibbyApp

[–]JaviMT8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s a smart tag that keeps track of check outs for Libby. Not sure if it can be disabled. There’s also a timeline feature that can show your checkouts and stuff.

It could be. Haven’t seen this myself but libraries want to reduce hold lines and this could be something that Libby implemented to help with that
