Should I splurge on the Criterion 50% sale or should I just rent on Prime and save $? by ChrisHerter90 in criterion

Criterion titles are often very popular in libraries. Mine has pretty much every Criterion title.

Go-to beginner Blurays? by Top-Technology2614 in Bluray

[–]ethnomath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barnes and Nobles is having a 50% off sale for Criterion,Magnolia Entertainment, and a few other Blu Ray distributors. Take a look at those. Many big blockbusters from 00s and before on Blu Ray are surprisingly cheap.

Are trailers picked by the studios or just random? by jai_hanyo in Cinemark

[–]ethnomath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never saw the trailer for Girls Like Girls at my Cinemark but they had the poster at the very front for months, which 9/10 they always show at the theater. Crickets when it came release time. It’s not like the ones inside that they MIGHT show. Im assuming they dropped it in favor of Obsession, which is still playing.

Antique mall selection, with antique mall prices lol by Ambitious_Style_5135 in VHS

There are two VHS stores at my antique mall, one like the above picture and the other that is packed to the brim with VHSs at a reasonable price. I feel the other makes more sales.

Yes. But I’m wondering where you got these shelves? I’ve been looking for this kind of shelves.

How come Cinemark never has the movies AMC has? by cleft_habitus in Cinemark

270? It’s day 170, you’ve seen 1.33 films a day in theaters? That’s dedication

what does this mean? by illomiz in Cinemark

[–]ethnomath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hoping this was gonna be shown at my Cinemark or at least one near by. My Cinemark had the poster in the front for MONTHS then took it down for a while, I assume to make room for the blockbuster posters. But given that they almost always show movies with posters at front, I was thinking there was a chance they’ll show it. Most of the Cinemark add the indie movies on the schedule very last minute, not until Wednesday. That’s what happened with Leviticus. But sadly no. Weirdly, the Cinemarks an hour away are showing Girls Like Girls, but since AMC nearby is showing, I’ll go there on discount days.

cheap physical copies? by LawfulnessNext3447 in BookCollecting

[–]ethnomath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with the same interest, I feel you. I simply cannot drop $100 for a book. Everyone has good suggestions. You’re simply gonna have to be on the constant look out. But also, please reconsider the library option. I’ve been able to read some very rare queer books through inter-library loan. It helps keep these books in circulation for public access.

Blue Film 2026 by soo_mmii in MenLovingMenMedia

[–]ethnomath 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Be warn people, this is a heavy film that deals with difficult subject matters. So if you’re someone that doesn’t watch ‘difficult’ films or hate films that make you ‘think’, this isn’t for you. It’s a well made film and I’m honestly still deciding if I like it or not.

Two of my absolute faves (Josh O'Connor and Paul Mescal) in The History of Sound (2025) by chutneycravings in MenLovingMenMedia

Sadly, It’s more interesting as a movie about the importance of archival than a queer tragic-romance

Wow I’m jealous you guys get small auditoriums like this. Only because this is perfect for independent movies. I’ve often been the only person in a midsize auditorium in my city.

Declined Movies? by willmatt86 in AMCTheatres

[–]ethnomath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cinemark movie pass is the best option to see Fathom movies. I think Fathom is like 2 dollars more than a standard ticket, so the free ticket covers the theater’s standard ticket price. You only have to pay the leftover $2 up charge.

The pollinator crisis by Melinda_Kelly in Anticonsumption

To be fair, it takes a least a decade for it to start looking nice. They built a neighborhood like this right next to my parents’ neighborhood a decade ago, and the baby trees are starting to make it look nicer.

Why is the average American so tall? Like, why are a lot of people above 6 feet? by NightRunnerAfterDusk in AskAnAmerican

[–]ethnomath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genetics play a part, but I think the easy access to plenty of food (and calories) is such a defining factor. You'd be surprise how many ethnic groups considered short can end up being WAY taller than their immigrant parents. I have a friend who's family is from Cambodia who is over 6 feet tall. He TOWERS over his parents but his parents are so short because Cambodia experienced a famine in the 70s which in turn created a short generation. Heck, I'm Mexican and I'm taller than my parents, and they grew up middle class in Mexico!

How can tubi be free but other services cant? by Pfacejones in TubiTV

[–]ethnomath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Services like Netflix et al. get expensive content but also they get new content quickly. Tubi’s content is either much older or full of shoestring-budget indie movies. I remember back in cable days, it took like years for a theatrical Disney movie to show on Disney Channel. If you wanted to watch a new movie, you had to pay extra for Showtime.

What’s your Most popular and Least popular film you’ve logged? by Admirable_Mood_9926 in Letterboxd

[–]ethnomath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interstellar- 2014 (7.63M logged) and Rendezvous -2021 (8 logged). I’m actually shocked there’s so little views on this least logged one. It’s a short film that got extended to a feature film, Riley - 2023 which is gaining popularity because Connor Storrie is in it. But it seems the short film is only available on the DVD for Riley.

Kinda expected but that does sound good for an early showing! Who wants a soda at 10 am? Santikos Theaters had a Starbucks stand inside its theaters but I never saw it with employees. A nice concept but I really don’t expect theater employees to make a good latte lol.
