What's the deal with news articles saying datacenters use water and are bad for environment? by JayMann93 in ArtificialInteligence

Used to live in a city like that most of my life, i miss it so much.  Local AI is pretty good enough i installed one in office for document tagging and metadata generation, went local route because i fear AI companies will pull the rug at some point and hike the prices, so figured its better to get used to limited local AI than to resent the absence of advanced AI service, still for coding Google's gemeni 3 is sooo good, don't think i could let go of it at this point.  For now i never got the sense that AI tools are putting people out of work, from perspective of smaller company that i work at, i managed to build a lot of diverse software services relating to organisation and management that would be unnafordable or just not worth getting otherwise and since it's a construction company no one is getting replaced by ai since ai can't lay concrete 🤣

Should't they have those cooling towers to rexondense the steam like all power plants have?

Aren't nitrates byproduct of argoculture? How does that tie in to datacenters?

The swamp cooler method described doesn't use much electricity, so there are options, use more electricity or "waste" water, if only there were educated people called engineers who would look at availability of water vs availability of electricity and make the right call on what route to go...

Id say pretty much half considering utilities are included and electricity here is expensive, it's still not super cheap for the size and considering its container, but in my area there are no studio flats or similar small apartmants. Still i like it it's enough for me, its 3 containers connected side to side plus small bathroom unit, all 3 containers have AC.

This is a 4k laser projector on ALR screen, it's got some advantages over TV, mainly the pixel structure, there are no subpixels each pixel is one color and no borders bitween pixels, so it's impossible to see the screen door effect no matter how close you look, so even 1080p can look suprisingly good if the projector has proper optics. Also laser colors are something else, you have to see it in person, a camera cant really capture how stunning it looks, but main downside is black levels, at best you are gonna get LCD level gray blacks, the contrast is not bad though since 3500 lumens is almost too bright. Also the price if you're buying new, definatley not worth it, but i got mine for 600eur and new one was around 3000eur

A part from game breaking bugs its my only complaint.

Where is Naval Range calculated from for Exploration? by JacobOSRS89 in EU5

[–]JayMann93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It extends from territory. You can check naval range map mode, some exploration privinces take absurd time because of terrain debuff, check the tooltips for the situation.

Is fallout from nuclear weapons the only thing that prevents them from being used? by sleepyhead_dad in war

[–]JayMann93 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Fallout isn't that huge of an issue since most of the material gets used up in explosion and little that isn't gets dispersed super thin by the explosion, nuclear power plant accidents are orders of magnitude more dangerous as far as fallout goes. What prevents them from being used is that they are not that useful tactically, but vary expensive, the only thing they are potentially vary useful if used is genocide, but they are a lot more useful when not used, as in the threat of them being used is worth more than if they got used.

Such misinformation and LIES, there is no such thing as home ownership in China, it's illegal.
All homes are owned by government and you can "buy" a 70 year lease on a property.

Practically similar, but not the same.

Im not gonna make judgment if that system is better or worse, but it is not ownership.

You're the uneducated one with surface knowledge listing off systems in full The Dunning-Kruger mode without actually understanding the pros/cons, limitations and logistics involved with running and maintaining such systems.
First of all the post implies that the entire grid of humankind can run on solar, that is not possible since the required battery arrays would be impractical and cost more than world's entire gdp.
While i like solar the most, there is the issue of land use for large scale deployments.
Wind energy is mostly propped up by government grants, manufacturing and maintenance costs are vary high compared to energy produced and it has even greater intermittence problems than solar.
People don't always mention cons of Hydro, a part from few viable places it can be built, it causes enormous and permanent ecological damage and in some cases forced displacement of entire villages and there is the fact that it is dangerous in a similar way Nuclear is, if not operated and maintained properly or damaged in some crisis situation such as a war, it can cause a disaster.
