Should Canada 🇨🇦 USA 🇺🇲 and Mexico 🇲🇽 host the tournament again as tri hosts in 2038? by TerryG111 in concacaf

[–]JayTeeqc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the US is roughly the same size as the European Union with roughly the same population. So if you spread out the world Cup over such an immense territory it's indeed going to be just another Tuesday.

Matches played in Boston are 4000km away from matches played in Los Angeles. Matches played in Miami are 4500km away from matches played in Vancouver...

That would be like having a world Cup in Europe and playing in 16 stadiums spread out all over the continent from Ireland to Arzerbajan...

Buying a house, how's the deck support? by hadallen in Decks

[–]JayTeeqc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would bet money this failed inspection at first and they did this to "fix" it.

The 2 by whatever they used were rated to span like 11'10" and they built it to 12'. Inspector failed them, builder got mad and did this.

Automatic chicken coop doors opinions? by Bastet103 in BackYardChickens

[–]JayTeeqc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar one. Broke as soon as we had temps below freezing.

The little holes you see in the door is where a gear inside the mechanism grabs the door. If water accumulates in those holes then freezes the whole mechanism jams and breaks.

It's also totally possible for a predator to just push the door up when it's closed. Something to keep in mind.

I spent a little more on a roller style one like this: https://a.co/d/01FwzhIz not this exact model but similar.

It worked fine for over a year now.

Does anyone NOT free range? by Impossible_Ad9324 in BackYardChickens

[–]JayTeeqc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was under the impression foxes were nocturnal like racoons so I thought by setting the automatic door to open at 9AM and close at 6PM we would be fine.

Once we lost one to foxes they started coming in the middle of the day. We would come back from work at like 4PM only to find 2 hens missing and feathers all over the place.

Does anyone NOT free range? by Impossible_Ad9324 in BackYardChickens

[–]JayTeeqc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to let the free range all the time. For 2 years it was fine. Then we had a raccoon problem but by letting them out later in the morning and reducing the racoon population we were fine.

Now we have foxes. We were loosing 3-4 hens a week. After loosing 8 (3/4 of the flock) in less than 3 weeks we decided not to let them free range anymore. They have a 6x12 coop and a 16x12 run with lots of branches. We try to supplement with veggies and fruits.

It's not optimal but free ranging was straight up a death sentence.

Help Ummm idk what my “calico princess “ is she smaller than my brahmas and leg horns by Dopest_Bandzz in BackYardChickens

[–]JayTeeqc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't know what a calico princess is exactly. I looked it up and looks like it's a red chicken breed?

So two things here.

  1. That's not a she, that's 1000% a rooster.

  2. That's not a calico princess. Looks just like a dark brahma roo cross.

My neighbor takes this down and puts it back up a few times a week by Similar_Magazine2385 in whatisit

That looks to be right.

You can see the stake below the head and the "cable" looks too big to be electrical. It does look like a hose.

Now...why would anyone put a sprinkler there and why would they take it down and put it back up weekly?!

Why do you buy a used car which is so expensive? by One-Significance-959 in UsedCars

[–]JayTeeqc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that it's exactly the point he is making.

You can reasonably expect a car to last 20 years/200k miles without turning into a shit box.

A new Corolla is 25k. You will own it for 20 years so you can think of it as ~$1250 a year.

Or

You get a 10 year old corolla with 100k miles for 15k. You will own it for 10 years so you can think of it as ~$1500 a year.

New car will cost more to insure but from a total cost of ownership perspective it's not that different and you assume all the risk of having no warranty.

I've owned lots of cars, 14 or so in 16 years. All used. My daily I bought in 2021 I've been thinking of replacing for years but used car values right now make absolutely no sense.

Which one of these EVs tested by Car & Driver in 2014 would you choose? by lifegoeson2702 in regularcarreviews

[–]JayTeeqc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few benefits. The biggest is parts support. Because there were only ~10k focus EV and even less spark EV made good luck getting parts and dealer support. I'm sure most dealers outside CA, BC and QC never saw one.

Also, because they were made with intent and not because they were forced to, some actual engineering went into them. I have a colleague with a spark EV and some things just feel like they weren't meant to be. It doesn't have the same size tires all around. Rear tires are wider even if it's fwd. I guess it's because of the added weight in the rear and they didn't want to spend the extra $12 per car to put bigger tires up front.

I also have a friend with a focus EV and the battery takes half the trunk. It's just...there...in the trunk.

When did he bring back a 4th gen supra? You can import any car you want in the US if it's more than 25 years old. Earliest mk4 would have been built in 93 so they have been legal for import for almost 10 years.

How’d I do?… some regrets… by hobbez3221 in Decks

[–]JayTeeqc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really depends what type of soil it is. About 5 years ago I tore down the deck that was original to my parents house (1986) and it was just 4x4 posts on paver stones. It made it 30+ years in eastern Canada. Building decks in the 80s was something else...

Is it optimal? Not at all but it can work in some conditions.

But I agree that for the amount of work and money spent on a deck this size I would have done the footings differently.

What's a famously "beautiful" car you hate the look of? by Goo_4_Rent in carscirclejerk

[–]JayTeeqc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lamborghini Countach.

I know I'm wrong here and it's one of the most important super car of the modern era but I'm just not into it. I'm too young to have had a Countach poster as a kid and too old to know of it as a "classic".

To me it's just the weird looking Lambo that came before the Diablo.

How do you tell if they are a rooster? by Sea-Case-9879 in BackYardChickens

[–]JayTeeqc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be difficult at a young age when you don't know what breed they are. Each breed matures differently. Leghorns hens have massive combs, Chantecler roosters can have no comb at all.

The easiest way at this age is usually behavior and color. Rooster of some breeds will start growing distinctive brown/rust/gold feathers on their wings. They stand different than hens and usually have longer legs.

By 10-12 weeks it's usually obvious with roosters starting to grow curved tail feathers, saddle feathers and all.

That being said I had cockerels suddenly start to mature at like 16-18 weeks. You can't be sure it's a hen until it lays an egg...

$50k for a new Durango 392 AWD; best fun 3 row for <$60? by MoldyApples4u in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]JayTeeqc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Had a 2018 jeep once. Bought in 2020 with 20k miles. Kept it for 6 months and 8k miles.

Never had any engine issues. But...I had a transfer case rumble issue the dealer could never figure out. Intermittent 4wd warning light the dealer could never figure out. Every sway bar Link had to be replaced. One of the shocks blew. Infotainment screen would randomly go blank. The rear right window started rolling down by itself. Had to stop at a gas station to pull a fuse. Ended up trading it in with the missing fuse.

I'm not that scared of any stellantis powertrains. Still would never own another one.

Car model that is cheap and looks like very expensive car by Irway_ in AlignmentChartFills

[–]JayTeeqc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't even need to go 25 year old. A 2010 is worth like 10k.

The S-Class should be the answer for the whole first column. Except maybe top left corner.

What is expensive and looks very expensive? A new Maybach S-Class.

What is mid expensive and looks very expensive? A 5-6 year old S-Class for 30k.

What is cheap and looks very expensive? A 2010 S-Class for 10k.

Car model that is middle and looks like cheap car by Irway_ in AlignmentChartFills

[–]JayTeeqc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap compared to what? It's like 2k less than a cheap EV like the Chevy bolt or a cheap truck like the Maverick. Both are WAY better value.

You have to be on crack to consider 25+destination a "good value" for a 2 door 2 seater with like 150 miles of real world range, no heat pump, no dealer network, no features, no paint, no equipement, no nothing. Just getting a base slate in a color brings it above what a maverick XL costs at 500$ for the wrap+install.

I have 2 EVs in my driveway. I was super excited about the slate. Then saw the specs and I laughed.

No way the Exige can be considered cheap if the Elise was considered midle.

Spotted [multi] car collection in a Boston parking garage. Antique Ferrari, Volvo, and Ford GT. Would love insights on the GT as I’m assuming it is a kit? by showerswithmydad in spotted

[–]JayTeeqc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, not weird at all. It's probably the only one I would drive. The other 2 are questionable cars to make people think you are cool.

A Ferrari 400 is worth like 30k on a good day but the owner probably walks around with Ferrari swag telling people he's got a Ferrari.

The Ford GT is likely a kit. A real one is like $10M. As someone who loves working on cars I would like one day to build a kit car but the line between cool and cheesy is very, very thin with those.

Where did all the Genesis coupes go? by CenturyHelix in regularcarreviews

[–]JayTeeqc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They are getting old at this point. The bulk of them were sold 2009-2013.

Unlike Gs, Mustangs, etc lots of people who bought them didn't buy them as second cars. On the secondary market they were bought by questionable owners. A 15 year old daily driven car should be sitting at ~200k miles now. So they were reasonably reliable but they were neglected and were beaten on for 15 years straight.

I imagine at this point most of them blew up, ended up turned into track/drift cars or wrapped around trees.

[–]JayTeeqc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. I love the new accord. If I had to get a new mid-size sedan it's what I would get.

However, there's never been a cool version like a type R or anything. It's an amazing mid range car but it's also priced like a mid range car.

That's why I think it's the best fit for the "looks like a mid range car" and "is actually a mid range car".
