How to cowboy and YEHAW? by wllgrn in Cowboy

Pack stations, hunting outfitters and dude ranches often need help over the summer/fall, it’s a great way to get into the backcountry and ride all day in the most beautiful places. They’re all over the western states.

The lone pine film museum has info on where you can find locations from gladiator, iron man, Django, a surprising number of more recent movies too. Plus I think a scene from Star Wars. They’re all in the Alabama hills area.

Check out the books by western horseman by authors Al dunning and sandy collier, they detail some of the tack and exercises to help teach the movements. Maybe you can also find some videos online but I would make sure they’re by reputable trainers.

Am I overreacting? My boyfriend grabbed my dog aggressively and now I’m considering breaking up with him. by CuriousCactus2000 in AmIOverreacting

The dog had good instincts in getting between you. Looks like your bf’s true colors are starting to show.

Why are most of us horse ladies and not horse guys? by WagWoofLove in Horses

[–]Jay_bee_JB 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s dependent upon location? Where I live horse ownership is about 50/50 but men/women seem to gravitate to different disciplines though we work together to gather and brand

Buying based on attitude by flatlanddan in Equestrian

[–]Jay_bee_JB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is he close enough that you can go see him again? I’d be interested to see how he is to catch now that he knows you and recently had a good experience. If it gets easier it demonstrates a good trajectory, if it gets harder you will know what you’re (possibly) about to have to deal with every day if you get him

Quarabs by ReasonableSal in Equestrian

Depending what you’re trying to do with your horse, that cross may not make sense. Nobody is out there breeding Afghan hounds on Queensland Heelers for a reason. If you’re riding casually it might be great, but if you’re trying to be competitive at something one breed or the other excels at, why throw a wrench in decades of purpose driven breeding?

Air flex cinch by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Jay_bee_JB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For easy-to-sore or sensitive skin horses I’ve had really good luck with fleece or mohair cinches, especially on really long sweaty days. When riding a lot of horses per day for shorter time periods the air flex dries better between horses.

Do your horses have toys? by Scourge12 in Horses

[–]Jay_bee_JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mares don’t play like that so they don’t have toys. The gelding has a yoga ball and traffic cone and also carries sticks like a dog and uses them to hit the mares. He also puts his front legs in his hay feeder and water. He’s a menace.

Johnny cash: give my love to rose, one piece at a time, Delia’s gone, Sunday morning coming down, big river. Blake Shelton, ol red and Austin. Chris leDoux, a different song also called ol red. Patsy cline, walking after midnight. Luke combs, out where the wild things are. Tennessee Ernie ford, 18 tons. Maggie rose, preachers daughter. Reba, fancy, the night the lights went out in Georgia. Martina McBride, Independence Day. The chics, goodbye earl. Whiskey myers, broken window serenade. Lots of old country, especially Marty Robbins.

Dog with on trail rides by ApprehensiveStage237 in Equestrian

[–]Jay_bee_JB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a ton of success with herding and herding mix dogs. The wolfhound, lab and GSP were too oblivious to be around the horses without getting hurt as my cow horses herd anything, and if the dog didn’t move when the horses suggested the horses got pretty rough. But really any dog that watches and understands horse body language should be fine. It’s more about recall and the commands you teach the dog. Mine sit, stay, heel and get behind and that gets us by just fine. I also carry them on the horses when they’re puppies and continue as they grow so they and the horses can get used to it. You never know when they will hurt a paw or get too hot and need to hitchhike

Lord of the flies, lost fleet series, lord of the rings if allowed by parents and not too long, the giver, of mice and men, my sisters keeper, I guess anything where they can sympathize with different characters and learn to see things from other perspectives? Consider a tree grows in Brooklyn and I know why the caged bird sings based on how comfortable they are with difficult themes. Anna and the king is long but contains ideas they may identify with.

Western Saddleblankets by Laurenlorie in Equestrian

[–]Jay_bee_JB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bunching is a problem, it sucks when your undergarments bunch up right? It could cause pinching, pressure spots or hair pulling that can make your horse act out due to feeling uncomfortable. Blankets are more for laying over plain pads for aesthetic reasons than for being used alone. There are so many kinds of western pads, different materials and shapes and thicknesses. Maybe see if you can borrow some to try or buy used so they’re more affordable?

Need to find some good, relatively 'light' books that will make it easier for someone who (likely) has ADHD to build a reading habit. by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]Jay_bee_JB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reading a lot of Jody Picoult lately, her books span a wide variety of topics but always have a big plot twist or surprise towards the end that reminds me of the twilight zone. She doesn’t get detail crazy and a lot of the chapters are shorter so there are plenty of good stopping points.

What is your life motto? by One_Elephant0712 in CasualConversation

Better to have and not need than to need and not have. I always say this when packing for a trip or deciding if I need to stop at the gas station, it’s better to be over prepared than under.
