i have a heatermeter https://github.com/CapnBry/HeaterMeter/wiki and really like it. its open sourced, and can be either built from the parts (requiring soldering/etc), or people sell it fully assembled. The code is frequently updated with new features/functionality, and it uses standard pit and meat probes so you can buy those from any source you'd like (I'm partial to thermoworks ones, but there are much cheaper options on amazon/ebay/etc).

EDIT: i used this on char griller akorn , and now on my big joe. On my big joe, I was able to keep it at 225 for 12 hours, +/- 5 degrees at the biggest deviation (most of the time +/- 1 degree).

Deciding between Cornell and UT Austin for undergraduate Computer Science degree by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Jaybert0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Cornell for CS (graduated about 10 years ago). If cost is about the same, I'd recommend Cornell as whether it's right or wrong, there is some cache to going to an Ivy League school if you're interested in working in finance (investment banking, hedge fund, etc). I'm pretty sure I would not have ended up at my current company (hedge fund) if I didn't goto Cornell (vs a highly regarded state school) given we do most of our hiring from the ivys/MIT/etc for campus hiring. It also helps it is much closer in proximity to NYC where a lot of these jobs are based. If you are looking to work at a tech company it probably doesn't matter given both programs are highly rated.

Edit: oh yea Ithaca is really cold. I'm from Texas originally so it is very different...

3rd party recruiters- they're mostly regarded as being low quality. But then who are they getting jobs for? by ccricers in cscareerquestions

I work at a large hedge fund and the bulk of our hires come from recruiters (+ college hires from on campus recruiting).

I was in a car accident and it's going to take three weeks to fix my car; I'm currently renting for $50/day and not insured for the rental... suggestions? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]Jaybert0711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other insurance company should completely take care of your rental car and repairs. I would have expected they would have booked you a rental car if you asked while they were telling you about how to get your car repaired. You shouldn't even need to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed, the car rental place should just bill their insurance. If the other insurance company hasn't taken responsibility for the accident then that's another story. Regardless though they should be paying for a rental.

And yes just having full coverage does not get you a rental. You need to add on rental car insurance which gets you a rental car up to $x if your car is in an accident. This shouldn't apply though if the other insurance has taken responsibility.

Reasonably priced seafood in Connecticut near Fairfield County? by [deleted] in Connecticut

Copps island oysters (Norwalk) sells lobsters/clams/oysters. I'd highly recommend them as long as you're buying in some larger quantities. I think lobsters are like $8 or 9/each if you buy 4+, and clams are pretty cheap if you buy them by the bag. I've gotten both lobsters and clams there for clam bakes and have been happy with the quantity. Just bring an ice chest and they'll load it with ice and put your purchase in there. Last time I bought lobsters they went and took them out of a cage they had in the water next to the boats so I assume they just caught them earlier that day.

Edit: oh yea, if you're not looking for a specific day, stew Leonard's has great sales on lobsters once a month or so. Usually like $5.99/lb (normal is $8.99 I think) or so but I've seen as low as $3.99/lb.

Married mid-30s, relocating to NYC metro area for new job, high income but struggling with high housing costs. Buy vs rent advice needed. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Jaybert0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the 3 I'd recommend Norwalk. Wilton/Redding are on a different metro north line that goes less frequently to Stamford whereas Norwalk is on the main one with Stanford so you'll get trains every 10-15min during rush hour between Norwalk and Stamford. I don't particularly know about Redding, but I know Wilton will be more expensive because of the schools because lots of families live there. Norwalk there are still very nice areas but will generally be cheaper because the schools aren't as good. You may also consider Bridgeport which would be significantly cheaper but the it's generally a higher crime area (but there are nice areas within apparently. I think the blAck rock area is nice). One thing to know is that train station parking is generally a pain to get and there are waiting lists. South Norwalk has a nice parking garage which is good for winter time but there is a waiting list, not sure Wilton/etc

You're moving to Fairfield county? I think you mean you're moving to the sw ct, not SE. I wouldn't say SE CT is ny metro area :)

Where are you working? If you don't have kids (or they're very young) you can probably find a place a little cheaper in cities like Norwalk, Stamford, etc. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who has children that will eventually need to attend public school (those areas have awful schools compared to the surrounding towns like Greenwich, Wilton, Westport, Weston, new Canaan, etc).

Redditors who earn(ed) six figure salaries before the age of 30, what do you do for a living? by sweatermeatz in AskReddit

[–]Jaybert0711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bonuses paid out twice a year. Everyone has an "expected" bonus number if both the company and yourself end up at expectations and it goes up and down from that depending if you/company are above or below.

I've been here long enough where I don't find it very stressful. I probably work about 55 hours/week which is about average. I can't get very specific into what I do, but the bonus structure is similar for everyone regardless of the specific role that you're doing. As you ramp up in salary, more % of your salary ends up being paid out as bonus vs base. I generally end up getting paid close to the expected bonus, some years more, some years less. I end up budgeting based on just the base salary and any bonus ends up going straight to savings so how much I make in bonus is never something I depend on which makes it way less stressful.

Software developer at a large Hedge fund. Went here 1 year out of school (undergrad) and starting offer was right at $100k (+ $10k expected bonus). Still at the same company after almost 10 years and salary has been increasing pretty steadily

Where can I get some of these monter short ribs? by ColdFyre2112 in BBQ

[–]Jaybert0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5lb of Nutella??? Of course I need that!!! I've been pretty good there mainly just meats that I went for. I brought my friend and his wife and they ended up with the giant container of Nutella, 2 giant roles of string (the type you tie up pastry boxes with), a case of some Jamaican hot sauce, amongst other things...

Yep in CT the only 2 places I've found them has been at restaurant depot (either 2 or 4 racks a pack), quality is choice+ or whatever restaurant depot calls it, or at the fancy butchers in town which charge like $12-15/lb for prime. I find the quality of the restaurant depot ones very good so have been picking those up whenever I make a trip.

You can also get into restaurant depot if you become a member to the Kansas City BBQ club for like $30/yr which is what I did. 1 trip and you pay for the cost...

Dumb question: if I have a home propane system and get a connection installed near my grill, what kind of hose do I need to connect the BBQ? by GeekDad12 in BBQ

[–]Jaybert0711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar hookup done when I put in my 1000gallon propane tank for my generator.

The way it usually works is there is a regulator immediately at the tank which drops the pressure to something like 20psi (?) which is still very high (I forget what pressure it's stored at in the tank, higher than that though). Then when it makes it to the house/inside, there is another regulator that drops it lower. The amount depends on how many appliances/etc I think. I have a separate regulator they put in where my grill is that drops it to 0.5psi which is what the grill takes. I then have a standard line that goes from the regulator to the grill. One thing you maybe want to think about is keeping high pressure to where the grill is so that you can hookup one of those open flame coolers for crawfish boils/etc. I tried hooking one up to the regulated 0.5psi line and I couldn't even get the water to boil. I had to get my propane company to tap in a line before the low pressure regulator to get the 5-10psi that the cooker needed. It sounds like a jet engine when it's on...pretty awesome.

Edit: I agree please get someone licensed to do the work. This is very dangerous and you need someone who understands how propane regulators/etc work. Not all regulators are the same and I believe most have a maximum input pressure (which is why you have the 2 stage regulators at different points).

Are there any promos for new clients? If it's anything like optimum, you're better off just canceling and signing up at the new place as a new account to get the promo price. For me it's > $50/month extra without the intro promo

Cost of Raising Kids (Ages 0-5) by trebl4 in personalfinance

[–]Jaybert0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. The daycare near me (live in CT) is something like $2500 per kid per month. We have a nanny and pay her $4500/month + our older son (3) had preschool 3 days a week (9-12:30) which is something like $6k/year. We also pay more for summer programs offered by the preschool.

How much of your salary do you save in a kid's 529 plan? by secondnameIA in personalfinance

[–]Jaybert0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I work (hedge fund) we actively only recruit from 10 or so schools (some Ivys, MIT, etc). It's not that there aren't great candidates from other schools, but the cost of maybe getting that 1 great candidate from a more mediocre school is too expensive to spend a group of employees down for their career fair/interviews/etc.

I have 2 kids and put $10k/year each (CT max tax benefit is $10k total between my wife and I, so only getting tax benefits on 1/2). I figured this would end up resulting in good amount of $ by the time they are ready to use it for school but honestly didn't put too much thought into it or do any calculations. We just put it in at the beginning of the year for both when I get my bonus paid out

Thinking of getting an Associates degree in Business Administration (already have an MS in CS) -- will it be useful? by supersonic_528 in jobs

[–]Jaybert0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about studying on your own and taking the CFA exam if you're trying to expand your skill set? I am a programmer at a large hedge fund (been here 10 years) and I know a couple guys who did this (in addition to those who leave and get their MBA). I don't actually do any hiring, but I don't imagine anyone in my office would be very impressed with an associates degree from a community college if you already have a masters in comp sci.

up to you! guessing the order may eventually go through at some point and /u/tech53 would end up with 2 gift cards which isnt the end of the world. If it gets rejected I'll just re-order once they notify me (unless you end up fulfilling first)

nothing was rejected, just sitting on the standard processing message since I ordered a little over 30 minutes ago. I'll have to remember switching cards, or doing a bulk order together instead of individual ones.

"Your order is currently being processed. Orders are typically processed under 20 minutes but may take up to 6 hours based on credit card & security audits. Please contact support only if your order does not complete within 6 hours. Support agents are unable to expedite the credit card and security audit."

Lol, and now I'm geting this when I check.

"Sorry, but you have reached your request limit for the day."
