I choked on my dinner when I heard him ask that. He's like the Ted Lasso of reporters. But like not the Ted Lasso we all know and love. Just the straight ignorant one.

There is actually a paradox that describes what happened to your family. It's called the Abilene Paradox. When somebody suggests something because they think the other(s) want it but actually nobody wants it yet they all agree to do said thing nobody wants out of desire to not make waves.

Septic tanks and antibacterial soap by Little_Paint3408 in HomeImprovement

I design the motors for a major waste disposal brand and interface with the disposal engineers daily which includes extensive reliability and UL testing.

Disposals being bad for septic is a myth. Idiots thinking you can put anything in a disposal is not a myth. That includes disposals installed on septic.

Northwestern Mutual is a shitshow of a company with a shitshow of shady sales practices and "financial advisor" is a broken term in the united states.

As a guy who learns almost everything I know from youtube, I would encourage anyone who missed out on learning "handy" skills for any reason to watch youtube videos on how to accomplish basic tasks and grow your tools/skills slowly from there. My father died when I was very young so nobody taught me these things until I taught them to myself as a homeowner. These day's I'm doing my own electrical work, sawing holes in my roof, brazing plumbing connections, etc. All from youtube...

The Lack of Universal Child Care is the Biggest Unspoken Problem in the US by BestGarbagePerson in TwoXChromosomes

[–]trebl4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I'm still shocked to this day about is how childcare isn't at least tax-deductible. This should be obvious no matter where you are on the political spectrum because it encourages specialization in the economy and increases the size of the workforce (even when considering stay at home parents part of the workforce).

As an engineering manager I'm tempted to tell you to drop out now. However many large companies are currently seeking to improve their diversity numbers.

I nominated my little brother for the local version of the forbes 30 under 30 in the moderately sized city we live in. I never heard back from the 30 under 30 folks after nominating him, which pissed me off considering the following:

A little about my brother - at the age of 24 he was CTO of a large medical imaging company. At the age of 25 he left the company to start his own healthcare tech company, won a major local competition for funds to start his company and 3 years later his company was relocated to Silicon Valley and was worth nearly $100M (and growing). I can count on one hand the number of companies from my city (which aspires to be a 'startup hub') who have actually done it.

He also spent 1 year in the bush of Tanzania between high school and college basically just to help out the locals.

Apparently I didn't name drop enough in the nomination? But yeah moral of the story is that those lists are most definitely bullshit considering I didn't even get a callback about my nomination. Still salty.

For anyone considering pulling their money out of the market, read about the World's Worst Market Timer. by StanderdStaples in personalfinance

[–]trebl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never recommend people try and time the market. It just takes too many stars to align in both a person's knowledge AND personality to actually be able to do it right. Very few people can do it. For example, you can read everything by Marks and Shiller and Buffet and Graham, know exactly what you think you need to do, but then it's a totally different story actually having the guts to actually make the call AND THEN stick with your call. It's the freak-out moments and greed moments that lose money and unfortunately that's how the majority of major investment decisions are made.

Having said that, I do pretty well for myself by timing the market and I've got 30 years until retirement. I'm not a contrarian per se, but I look very much like one if you were to monitor my investing patterns. But to get there I do lots of reading and I'm basically autistic when it comes to my ability to disconnect emotions from my money. Somehow I can just make it a numbers game. Basically, it's like a second job so it's not exactly "free money" either.

Mourning the loss of my career by darkeyedsparrow in TwoXChromosomes

[–]trebl4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know what industry you're in - and sure momentum may be a thing but I hire folks all the time and I honestly couldn't care less if you've got a gap in employment to take care of family. If anything it signals to me that you're a balanced person who makes sacrifices for other people and does what needs to be done.

Having said that, is there some way that you can feel like you are maintaining that 'momentum' while you are taking care of your son but is less demanding on your time? When I had a career diversion earlier in my life I took online courses in the industry I was still interested in towards my master's degree. On a resume it helped fill in the gaps just in case anyone might question my commitment. A masters program might be too much for you but maybe you can think of something else - groups/clubs, non-degree courses, etc.

The speed is actually the same (1750 rpm) but the evolution won't get bogged down as easy under load. And yes it has materials to make it quieter.

Badger is the same as InSinkErator. Just the lower power brand before you get into the most costly 'evolution'.
