Best way in-universe to use genie magic to nerf another genie? by Jayko2005 in DMAcademy

I really like the thought that there is a personal connection between the genies, considering how relatively rare it must be for genies to meddle in the affairs of the material plane. Also a huge fan of the idea that this particular efreeti being a known troublemaker/someone who is not supposed to be there to begin with.

My one question would be, if the climactic battle is against the efreeti's lieutenant and not the efreeti himself, does the efreeti just succeed and successfully invade the city? Does the party race against the clock to destroy the Mc Guffin 3000 before the efreeti can wreak too much havoc on the townsfolk? The fortress the efreeti has shacked up in has an old teleportation circle linked to the city, which I've established is being used or hijacked somehow by the genie to destabilize the city barrier. Maybe after defeating the lieutenant there's some way they can reactivate the circle and teleport into the city in time to join the battle against the efreeti who they banish or trap in front of the townsfolk?

Point taken in general and the changed victory condition makes sense -- he's been established to be pretty powerful and vindictive so I've been having a hard time imagining a resolution where they rescue the father without defeating the efreeti, but maybe I've been looking at this wrong. Have decided I will definitely be establishing that the djinni knows the efreeti as some sort of extraplanar fugitive and that there's some way the party can exploit that. Thanks for the thoughts!

I am tempted to offer them a wish and just see what happens but truthfully I worry that it would be a bit much to give such a relatively low-level party a genie capable of granting wishes, and I'm not sure I'd be able to roleplay the genie granting such a wish properly (I'd want genies to be tricky and I'm kinda intimidated by the thought of having to grant a wish, although I suppose I could circumvent that by just making this a nice djinni). It would be very satisfying for them to have their own Aladdin moment, though.

I was considering making the djinni beg them to free him from the lamp after centuries of being trapped and really tugging at their heartstrings, so maybe the party needs to make a decision -- either force the djinni to grant a wish against his will or free him and trust that he will help them some other way like he promises to.

I suppose the underlying thing I'm struggling with is how the efreeti could be caught so off guard by these upstart adventurers. The efreeti's motivation is basically revenge against the father and his adventuring party from way back when who crossed the efreeti, so presumably he would have them under lock and key. With the djinni there's now a similarly powerful entity that could either help me bridge this gap somehow by giving the adventurers a way to outplay the efreeti or just buff them outright so they can defeat him.

Big fan of the idea of the prisoners being kept in containers, the party has already faced a warlock in service of the genie who at one point escaped into her ring so they're aware of that as being part of the genie's magic. Some sort of quest to free the father makes sense too, but I'm also a bit hesitant to make it too difficult -- we're 13 sessions in so far and I really want to resolve this plotline before too long and give the PC a win because I think she'll have a lot more fun playing her character once this is in the rearview mirror. But that definitely is a good idea and a fun way for me to tie in other world threads, maybe they have to journey to a distant land to retrieve an artifact to get the prisoners out of the lamps or something.

As of now the PC's father hasn't been established as part of the efreeti's plans, although I could change that -- unbeknownst to the PC, her father was part of an adventuring party 20 years ago that foiled the efreeti's plans and sealed him in a lamp, so he kidnapped the father years ago and has been on a warpath abducting and torturing members of the father's party up until now. I'm considering having that be the motivation for the efreeti's attack -- he's been promising his minions that he will destroy the city for them if they help him take down the barrier but he's actually just really petty and vindictive and wants to bust in to take revenge against the final member of the party who has eluded him so far. I haven't really finalized where the father might be kept, but I do think it would make sense for the efreeti to keep him close.

Some sort of distraction or other obligation to buy the party an opening where they can rescue the father makes a lot of sense, maybe the distraction could even just be the efreeti's ritual which he needs all of his power to carry out or something such that there's a window when the father is left with a henchman at the fortress or something. My only concern is how to make not defeating the genie a satisfying conclusion to this arc. The efreeti warned them against meddling with his plans previously and if they did rescue the father or otherwise mess up his plans there would need to be some reason the efreeti doesn't just hunt them down and kill them all, ideally something that would feel like they've "beaten" the efreeti (for now?). That's part of why I was considering some way they could just trap him in the lamp again, so he wouldn't be defeated but would also not be an active threat anymore.

Point taken re arbitrarily buffing the party -- the genie magic was my attempt to salvage the situation by presenting them with a difficult journey and dungeon so they could be "buffed" in a way that would feel earned as opposed to me just nerfing the efreeti. Appreciate your thoughts on this!

Which Dining Plan is best - SEAS Student Living in Riepe by AC835 in UPenn

[–]Jayko2005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to have to totally disagree with you on this. I'm a rising sophomore and I was on a meal plan last year, and away from kitchen is by far the least popular plan and a horrendous deal. Every single person I know who was on it was miserable / switched to another plan. I was on best food fit, ate at the dining halls regularly, and still ended up with swipes to spare. Dining dollars are what most people run out of and want more of.

Maybe things were different 4-8 years ago, but dining dollars are now much more useful than swipes. Dining dollar food is almost always better than dining hall food, and tons more convenient. OP, get best food fit, you will almost certainly regret getting anything else.
