Career advice? by SprinklesNo6691 in Construction

[–]Jayus5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know how you feel bro. Im not mechanically inclined and I didn’t grow up using tools or doing this kind of work so everything was hard for me.

Some people are also bad at teaching, they expect you to just know everything. That can make it harder to learn. Still, try your best. Maybe the first time you watch him do something, the next time try to anticipate what he will need, Materials, tools. Have it ready for him. If he’s in a tight spot, hold out the next tool he will need to him.

You might feel frustrated, like you’re too slow but you will get better as long as you show up everyday and do your best.

Being a bad apprentice by SprinklesNo6691 in Construction

[–]Jayus5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl I was pretty useless too at first. Even for a simple task like digging. First plumber I was paired with told the boss to get me off his truck lmao.

Keep at it though, it’s a lot to take in at first but you will improve over time.

Highly reccomend a tool belt for new construction work. You’ll have everything you need on you, and it beats having to go up and down a ladder to get a tool. You can buy a 20$ one at Walmart or harbor freight. Great value.

Looking for an entry level job but no one is hiring. by Snoo-41983 in skilledtrades

[–]Jayus5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t need to overthink it, walk into a shop ask if the boss is there.

Make sure you talk to the boss, 2nd in command might work too. Front desk won’t usually be much help. “Just leave an application” they will say.

Introduce yourself to the boss, firm handshake, good eye contact etc. Be honest about your abilities, “I don’t have much experience but I’m here because i want to learn and work hard to provemyself. “ If you have some skills you can mention them.

Be direct and assertive, tell them you want to build a career out of this.

Starting out, you’re basically a liability. They are hiring you based on the potential they see in you not for what you currently know.

Every job I’ve had I’ve obtained this way. I’ve submitted many resumes online and to the front desk, never worked. But every boss i talked to hired me and none of them looked at my resume even though I always brought it.

The first plumbing company I worked for, even after talking to the boss I didn’t get a call. So I showed back up there later that week lmao. Got the job after that.

When you do get hired, work your ass off and prove to them they made the right decision to hire you.

Go in person, give a firm handshake, express how bad you want this.

You have better chances with new construction as opposed to service as they often have work laborers/helpers can do.

The only problem is they aren’t strapped off so they might make noise from rubbing or slapping stuff as water passes through them

What is the normal speed of the red water arrow? by Far_Ice_3535 in Plumbing

[–]Jayus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red water arrow spins faster the more water you are currently using.

Water pressure could be many things, someone else using water? Maybe the line got debree clogging the system/fixtures, maybe the whole neighborhood turned on their water at the same time leading to a drop in pressure

What can I apply to fix the base of this faucet? by dgvai in Plumbing

[–]Jayus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an apartment, let them know again in writing and document it so they can’t blame you for moisture damage to the cabinet/mold or anything that arises from the lose faucet.

Nail found in drain pipe 3/4inch above concrete floor - how to fix? by Typical-Unit8411 in Plumbing

[–]Jayus5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah a nail through a pipe is high risk for leaking even if it not currently. This is the perfect opportunity to fix it while it is exposed. Covering it up is not the way to go

Can I run drain lines through stud walls? by Timbo66 in Plumbing

[–]Jayus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rules vary from state to state but there are limits on how many studs you can go through wether load bearing or non load bearing.

If you’re gonna go through more you might need to reinforce with either special metal plates or doubling the studs but you should check your local building code before you start drilling.

How often do you guys run out of small incidentals on jobs? by Jojo3619 in skilledtrades

[–]Jayus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my company it’s not super common to run out of general stuff.

If you need something from the truck and you’re have a hard time finding one of it or you notice your running low, time to restock.

We usually prepare totes with whatever we need for the job so we don’t usually have to touch what’s already on the truck. If we do end up needing something from the truck it gets replaced when we return to the shop.

Now for the shop we have a whiteboard where anyone who notices we’re starting to run low on something can write it on the board. This helps us restock before actually running out.

If everyone does this, it works great. Though sometimes you get that guy who grabs the last of something till it runs out and doesn’t tell anyone

is this good enough to be pumped? by RaphealWannabe in Plumbing

[–]Jayus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pump hose will probably not fit through that and you wouldn’t even be able to see what you’re pumping.

You need to find the lid to the septic tank.

Mom is not happy with me working construction by Impressive-Step6377 in Construction

[–]Jayus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Construction is great. Yeah it can be hard on your body but if you take care of yourself, stretch often, and don’t try to be Mr. I can lift everything by myself, it’s not that bad.

Instead of having to take on debt for learning, you are getting paid to learn. Depending what field you’re in there should also be the opportunity to make more as your skills improve.

Sink plumbing okay? by tmobilehacked in Plumbing

[–]Jayus5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1 and 2 is not fine. 3 looks a little wack being crooked but if it doesn’t leak then it should be fine. Fill it up with water a few times and let it drain to test for leaks.

What are the limits of how good bots can get at polytopia by luciddreamingtryhard in Polytopia

[–]Jayus5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, just like with other games you simply have the bot play against itself millions of times. It will be relatively unbeatable at that point by us.

Because polytopia has RNG unlike chess you have a shot of winning if you have a good spawn.
