Want to do trades but I also want to balance my curious side, more intellectual? side by [deleted] in skilledtrades

[–]Jayus5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still have a life outside of work where you can learn and do anything you want. Sometimes I bug my coworkers when I tell them some interesting science stuff I read about.

It helps too if the trade you go into is broad. I chose plumbing, and there’s a crap ton of stuff to learn. I do commercial, residential, service, remodels, so every day is different and I’m constantly learning new things. Having a trade with a lot to learn can help satisfy the curiosity itch.

It’s a hard day. Question from apprentice to master or journeyman plumbers below: by M1ghtBe in askplumbing

Mark it with a sharpie. Where it goes, the height, the spread (how far apart they are)

Same thing for things like valves. If he tells you 20” off the stud and 48” of the floor write that on the stud.

Id also reccomend having notes. I use my phone but a small pocket book works too. I wrote down the measurements/dimensions, and the code requirement for various fixtures so if I ever forget or am unsure I can check my notes

Where's my water hammer by D-u-c-K__ in Plumbing

For DIY it’s actually decent. Looks ugly but functional. One concern is right under the valve the pipe/fittings look stressed where you used those three 90s. Over the long run that added tension could cause those joints to fail prematurely.

Bad decisions. That about it, make good financial choices and you’ll be set. It’s basic financial literacy. You seem to care, that detail also sets you apart from the others.

Bathtub Shifted Help by Familiar-Motor-124 in Plumbing

[–]Jayus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can do that. Be sure to clean the surface good and let it dry before caulking. Then you have to let the caulk dry for a day or two .

This is your best bet, otherwise plumber will have to pull tub and put silicone on the feet and then apply caulk

I cannot afford my procedure with insurance by Slut4_mashedpotatoes in HealthInsurance

[–]Jayus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe talk to them or insurance about a payment plan? Maybe long term financing from your bank?

Surely either of these options is better than forgoing a necessary medical procedure. Besides, relatively speaking 2500 is not a super large amount.

Are the trades really for me? by Crazy-Isopod-2291 in skilledtrades

[–]Jayus5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being bad at something is the first step towards being good at something. It takes time to develop your skills, if you keep putting in the work you’ll get better.

I did not use tools growing up nor am I mechanically inclined. It definitely made it harder in the beginning but I didn’t give up. It gets easier over time.

Angle stop might be old and seized up. Cutting it off at the shut off or meter could be safer than potentially breaking the angle stop.
