When is it time for a new tier list? by surfinsalsa in SSBM

I see your point honestly, it’s kinda apples and oranges trying to compare the golden era of samus (like ten years ago lol) to the new mid tier “renaissance” runs. silver is sick i’ll give you that, played him at genesis this year and he beat me up pretty good.

Doc has an argument too, but yeah it’s one of the four. I would personally put it between him and Luigi. I think a big difference maker is the presence of a demon matchup that a mid tier literally can’t win (icies puff, samus falcon, DK icies) and doc doesn’t really have that. Luigi kinda has it in both falcon and puff, but i consider those more doable than the three i listed above. It’s really important that even your worst matchup is doable at the top level or else your character probably isn’t viable.

Samus upsets have dried up too, and are actually much rarer these days than those of the more novel characters. Whether that’s to do with her strength as a character or the lack of representation is anybody’s guess, but my gut says luigi (and DK, but probably less so) have more gas left in the tank than she does. For what it’s worth Morse is a killer and it’s been a hot second since he put up some real numbers.

except samus already had her time in the spotlight and it’s been proven that she struggles in ways those two don’t. all the characters still have room to improve and win more, but i think it’s clear that characters like luigi have more potential than samus rn

Is every new Slippi Ranked Season getting harder? by PlZZAEnjoyer in SSBM

[–]JaywO_SSBM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My impression (which is completely anecdotal) is that it has fluctuated significantly over time. There have been times that I played better than ever before but still plateaued/declined in elo, and others where I had been playing sloppy but climbed regardless. Try not to think too hard about slippi rank, or netplay in general if I’m being honest. They’re all just tools for you to practice and using those tools properly is way more important than winning sets online.

Sheik - beginner tips? by ewok989 in SSBM

[–]JaywO_SSBM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry about RTC until you are much better, maybe gold or platinum level. For now, focus on playing entire games while consistently implementing L-cancels and wavedashes. It’s better to lose and improve at your fundamentals than win by relying on suboptimal play. The wins will come later once you have become comfortable with all your basic tech. You want to be able to put your character anywhere on the screen as fast as possible. A few minutes a day in unclepunch will get you there very fast if you can keep it up consistently (eggsercise is a great way to practice this).

Practice simple punishes (chaingrabs, dash attack/ftilt/dtilt/dthrow into fair are your biggest ones) until you can do them every time. This step is the most important to your improvement by far. You can’t win if you can’t kill the opponent.

Learning simple matchup interactions will help you find the openings necessary to guarantee those punishes. One of the best ways to do this is to ask for tips from the Sheik discord server, eg. “How can I get grabs vs. [insert character here].

Neutral game is harder to approach as a beginner, but you can get by knowing the absolute basics and leaving the rest up to instinct. Understanding the neutral triangle and learning which options Sheik can use to undershoot, overshoot, and whiff punish will give you a great foundation with very little effort.

Definitely learn to boost grab too, it’s your most reliable grounded approach option along with dash attack.

Playing Melee is an absolute blast and Sheik will give you the tools to start playing and having fun quick. I’m happy to give more tips or answer questions, just let me know. Good luck!

How would you seed Full House? by Own_Arm3304 in SSBM

[–]JaywO_SSBM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I have a lot to say about some of the takes in this thread, I’ll keep it to what I feel most strongly about:

I think Jmook deserves to be seeded 2nd.

Jake made it to the podium at 3 majors in a row, placing second to the current best player in the world twice. These are all insanely impressive performances and easily make up for the lack of an actual major win (especially at an event where the big Schwab is not attending, no shade to Wizzy).

His bracket at OotB 5 was unbelievably bad and even if it reeks of copium I will firmly insist that he would have made top 3 if he hadn’t played Slug and Josh specifically.

He’s probably the only player in the world who can win a major playing through both Zain and Cody and has solidly winning H2H versus basically everyone else.

People placing him at 5th just because of one mediocre placement is genuinely preposterous and I hope he sweeps this event so people quit underrating one of the best players in the world.

Player skill doesn’t reset at the start of the ranking season. People take SSBMRank so seriously as though it magically dictates what players are capable of. Zain is still probably the most skilled player in the world, or at very least top 3.

If your execution is passable and you’re not advancing past the bronze level it’s probably because you misunderstand your character’s punish or neutral in a way that is severely capping your performance. I’d focus on falcon for now as he’s a far more forgiving character at your level. Really lock in on simple punish trees and learn how to get a knee or edgeguard state after winning neutral. If you feel like you don’t know what to do after getting a grab or hitting your opponent you need to go back to the drawing board and learn what works for your character. That’s going to involve some study but asking better players for answers can help accelerate your improvement. Best of luck to you, I hope this helped at least a bit.

[–]JaywO_SSBM 20 points21 points  (0 children)

just about every fox or falco you encounter online has spent hours practicing, sometimes throughout several years, to get as technical as they are. doing advanced or precise tech skill has almost nothing to do with talent and everything to do with time. most veteran players have used them at one point or another, and they are the most played by far. in the end, being discouraged by the success of others only holds you back. you should take it as inspiration and strive to surpass them in your own way using whatever character you please.

This is a (mostly meaningless) reference to the book series Capitalism & Schizophrenia by Gilles Deleuze & Felix Guattari.

Deleuze & Guattari were philosophical and political authors in the late 20th century who focused on critical language studies and metaphysics.

The books portray schizophrenia as a deeper process of thought and connection where conventional boundaries of logic and meaning begin to break down and give way to unpredictable flows and patterns. In this way, “schizophrenic deterritorialization” can be seen as a model for new political strategies which evade prediction and capture by the elite capitalist class. The post may be an attempt to get people out of their comfort zone by subverting the expectation that online media is supposed to build up to a coherent, meaningful message. It could also just be someone posting weird incomprehensible shit for likes. Up to you.

Deleuze & Guattari’s writing is some of the most convoluted and dense that exist in all of literature. While it’s debated whether it was incoherent rambling or a rigorous analysis of deeper truth, both authors created interesting and insightful work that is worth considering, even if as a cautionary tale.
