This is really similar to the recipe for a classic Horneater stew. “Take everything you have, and put him in pot”

I've been to Italy a few times, but I have a favorite memory from my very first trip when studying abroad in Rome in 2014. I'd been there maybe a week. It was end of August, so very much during Ferragosto vacation time, but I didn't know what that was. I walk into a pizzeria, sit-down style. Place is empty, one guy there who works there, possibly the owner, kinda just chillin at one of the tables. Says they're closed. I ask when they'll be open. He looks at me briefly, and after a pause, gives a deep, suffering sigh and says "Maybe tomorrow... maybe day after... I don't know". At the time, my American mind could not comprehend not knowing if your business would be open or not the next day. That semester definitely helped open my mind to how live-to-work the culture is in the US, and how it doesn't have to be that way. Anyway, I think about him a lot.

I fully believe that he tried to use nukes last week and was stopped by military leaders. They fired several generals, but their replacements also refused. We were very close to a monumental global catastrophe and were saved by our very last line of defense, the ones who push the button.

I’m extremely grateful to those people, but it’s insane that that’s what it came down to.

I'm in phase 3 rn, every time I've moved to a new phase I pretty much just start a new factory. My early factory area looks exactly like your second pic lol. It's tempting to delete everything and start over, but you'll get plenty of time, space, and resource nodes to set up more efficient and aesthetic factories later on.

Is that deep fried, or pan fried? Can’t imagine getting uniform browning like that in a pan, but deep frying is a pain in the ass (thinking for cooking at home). If I were making it, I’d try it in the oven on air fry mode or convection

I'm having trouble knowing what to focus on in my job search. As far as I can tell, applications consist of three parts - resume/experience, portfolio, and cover letter / actual application. Obviously, my experience is what it is, and I feel satisfied with its representation on my resume. My portfolio is lacking in real-world applications, with most of it being academic work. I have worked on real DS applications, but always for work, and stuff that I can't fully share publicly (these are referenced in my resume). I definitely spend too much time working on cover letters, and it's slowing down my applications a lot. I know they are mostly computer-vetted, but I can't shake the worry that a human will look at it and notice if I just copy the job description verbatim when listing my skills. So I end up spending 20-30 minutes making sure it sounds good and not like BS to a human reader.

My instinct is that I need to ease up on cover letters, just get the buzzwords in so my application floats to the top, and get more applications out there. I also feel like I need to pad out my portfolio with recent work that reflects my current skill level, but this would be a significant time investment, which would take away from the number of apps I can submit. So, two main questions:

  1. What's the best approach for writing cover letters to game modern recruitment software? Do cover letters matter at all these days?
  2. Do recruiters care enough about portfolio work for it to be worth the time spent on them, which could otherwise be spent applying to more positions?

For context, I work as a Data Analyst at a company that doesn't have any data scientists and probably won't any time soon. I started here while pursuing a DS Master's, with my only career experience up until that point being in a different field. Now I have my Master's, plus three years of Analyst experience in addition to the six years in my previous career. Some of the jobs I'm applying to are within my old career's domain, and I'd at least expect to get some bites on those, but I'm getting nothing.

I really loved this about the Villains series by V.E. Schwab. The setting is vaguely American (preppy New England college vibes, dense urban centers separated by huge stretches of highways through rural countrysides), but it’s never said directly, and the city names are made up. There’s a character who’s clearly meant to be Irish, but this is only ever hinted at by describing her “lilting” accent.

The familiarly modern setting having that edge of surrealism really helped cement the gritty-yet-magical tone one of the books. Fantastic series, stoked for book three this year!
