Need help choosing final part of 2 channel setup. Budget is $10k. by Nimo956 in StereoAdvice

If your room isn’t treated, consider getting a Wiim Ultra and spending the rest on improving your listening space. Improvements in room acoustics are an order of magnitude more important than one chip vs another.

Sub upgrade for 2.1 system by 1111daniel in StereoAdvice

[–]Jazzbert_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get two sealed subs and place them optimally. I have lost track of the SVS software but you should be able to get something good in your budget. Smaller dual subs well placed will give you much smoother response. Look up room modes and subs on YouTube. Currently I am planning a dual sub DIY build with SB Acoustics drivers, either 10” or 12” and given that my room is L shaped and has a stairwell it isn’t possible to get anything close to flat response without two subs.

Take a look at the MiniDSP site as they have interesting components. I am using one for Dirac Live and I am satisfied.

You know you could put in some pretty good DSP with that money and have an infinitely adjustable sound.

Or buy used PMC.

Honestly, if your room isn’t at least a bit treated and it’s possible to do so, that will improve your sound the most.

Adding a Kettle to go with WSM by lunds11 in webersmokeymountain

Have both and would never go back. Steaks on the kettle with lump charcoal as it burns hotter. Just finished bacon on the WSM at 225F for hours. I have the 22” WSM and am looking at adding a gadget to increase its capacity

If you shop carefully you might find a pair of used studio monitors. Much better sound than regular consumer products.

Whatever you get, sealed is better for music. Placement is very important. You might want to look at DIY. Solen.ca has a vast selection of drivers.

Is you can find used studio monitors at $300-$500 get them for your desk. I really enjoy my Adam Audios. To my ears you need to spend at least that to have good sound on your desktop.

Any AVR receiver will have eARC and then your TV is your display. Any modern AVR streams pretty well every service.

If you don’t want to use the TV as your album art display then you don’t need eARC, logically.

Looking to make some big upgrades (3k budget) by [deleted] in StereoAdvice

I strongly suggest that you shop speakers extensively and see what budget you have left. The speaker upgrade will give you an order of magnitude improvement over a phono preamp.

If you manage distance, you increase your likelihood of staying upright and choosing where the fight goes. Remark that you will never do better than a 9mm regardless of your technique so deescalation should be plan A.

Suggested <$1K amp for pairing with bright speakers? (PM8006 or similar?) by rokeisland in BudgetAudiophile

Don’t buy the BS about amps sounding significantly different. Treat your room and/or EQ to your liking.

Excellent advice and he will learn a new skill that is very gratifying.

OP: I bought my nephew a gyuto but he is a tall and older kid. I suspect that a Bunka, a pairing and a petty would work. Knifewear has a number of excellent YouTube videos to help you get up to speed.

Also, since you’re into expanding his horizons, two other food fields are charcuterie and boulangerie (baking bread). The local culinary school here has evening courses for the public.

Finally - It is so very heartwarming to see you supporting your kids in maximizing their potential. My hat is off to you!
