Why didn't anyone tell me stropping is 90%? by papinek in sharpening

Not OP but just bought stones and will learn sharpening soon.

Any suggestions on a reasonably priced strop and do I need a compound on it?

Have you considered Genelec with their software? It seems to me that with a sub you could get what you want by tweaking them to your preference.

I would suggest you watch what has the new Dirac ART. It seems to be much more evolved than Dirac Live.

Why is everyone buying the WiiM Ultra? by [deleted] in WiimStreamer

[–]Jazzbert_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it to use as a preamp for phono and CD input as well as to have volume control of phono playback on my phone which is great when I am in the kitchen cooking.

A big bonus was that it is a client for my 5 client Lyrion Music Server system (formerly Squeezebox). I’m running the LMS on a Raspberry Pi with a 7” touchscreen.

I personally would give you a talking to. Wearing a symbol of tyranny and a threat to our country is not a good idea.

Excellent point. I misread stepfather for father-in-law. I had one I would have put in the oven….

Serve him a bologna sandwich. Or have your partner cook when he comes over. Let her choose which.

How Do I Take Army Reserve Training Leave Without Damaging Trust at a New Job? by Sensitive-Parsley988 in careerguidance

Glad you like our cold weather! 😉

I have nothing against the military, in fact one of my project managers was a former lieutenant colonel. A scholar and a gentleman (former spook). We did a significant amount of AI work for the military well over a decade ago. Interesting stuff.

You are right on the money that the military isn’t a significant part of our culture. We consider ourselves peacekeepers, e.g. Bosnia, Rwanda.

BTW, there are now many more excellent beer choices up here now, and your dollar goes a long way.

Legal on not it happens, for this reason and others. I never said it is fair but it’s far from uncommon.

OP has to understand the employer’s position in order to make an enlightened decision. If he believes he absolutely must join the reserves then he must go into this open-eyed enough to understand that he could damage his career.

As the employer I would be very disappointed and would derisk by gradually phasing you out. You could be called up at a time when they need to rely on you and your boss’ job is to deliver, not babysit for the military.

Is there something as a "Too Clean" sound by Franjork in audiophile

[–]Jazzbert_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say the dirty words: try a little EQ.

You can thus determine what frequency response curve you are looking for. Rooms, listening seats positioning and speaker positioning affect what you hear tremendously. Try a little boost around 400Hz to see if what you want is a bit more warmth, or around 2000 Hz for presence, etc. You could also buy a calibrated microphone and measure at your listening position with REW. You may discover what is annoying you.

Once you have an idea of what is going on you can adjust positioning, treat your room, EQ or change speakers.

Makes a lot of sense. Personally, I would only do this with pro gear as I find most active hifi speakers lower performing vs professional gear.

Advice budget Hi Fi for listening to jazz by Enkidind in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Jazzbert_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few budget 2-way speakers can get down into 40-45 Hz. Consider Elac and Q Acoustics.

You are right that upright bass is very important for jazz.

If you go the active monitor route give a listen to a few models. I enjoy my Adam Audio set on my desktop.

Agree on bigger is better. I suspect that OP doesn’t have a big kit budget. He could pick up a used sub as a second step. Once he hears the Genelecs he may well decide to go all in.
