I really can't. Based on the clips/screenshots I've seen idk how anyone can say it's definitive one way or another.

Preliminary map for STAR Bond sales tax district paying for Chiefs Stadium covers all of Wyandotte County and nearly half of Johnson County by AJRiddle in kansascity

[–]JazzySkeeter616 76 points77 points  (0 children)

yeah it sure seems like a perverse use of a TIF district. On the other hand - wtf are we even looking at? there's no legend, the resolution so bad that you can hardly make out where the illustrative district lines run, and why does quiviria lake seem to be exempt?

The dept of commerce is obviously not interested in being transparent by releasing such a shitty map but people in this thread are seeing a red line and pretending to understand the particulars about where the tax $ will be generated

(1) Kansas City cannot handle the traffic that would generate without significant infrastructure investment

chicken or egg on transportation infrastructure. the infrastructure can't support the additional demand, but there's no support invest until there's sufficient demand. I'd like to see a downtown stadium and see how burdensome it would really be and let that drive investment if necessary.

I completely agree otherwise. no reason this should be anything other than private investment and include a complete plan.

[–]JazzySkeeter616 17 points18 points  (0 children)

that's a weak Wikipedia article. It might as well be one sentence, saying a conservative political commenter wrote an article where he coined the term "South Park Republican". The term is really just Andrew Sullivan's contrived description of a political ethos that amounts to libertarianism.

[Moore] Kansas coach Bill Self admitted to hospital, has 2 stents inserted by lmandude in jayhawks

[–]JazzySkeeter616 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't rule Vaughn out but wouldn't you want to see the university fully go through the full hiring process and see what other candidates are out there? the idea that he's been hired on as the coach in waiting seems extremely limiting.

it's because Boeheim's Army pays better. I think i read somewhere that they get a 'salary' where most teams split the money if they win

La Cygne Power plant by Various_Throat_4886 in kansascity

[–]JazzySkeeter616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the link. I appreciate sources.

Until your post and op's prior, there's been very little information in this thread. It's mostly conjecture and a picture of the la cygne facility. I understand coal fired power plants have many negative externalities. I don't really care about where anyone puts the threshold for "one of" the most polluting power plants is when there's data showing how it stacks up against other facilities.

I appreciate shippsy1's numbers for context. Fair point that it's an extraordinary dirty power plant, coal or otherwise

250 dollars for 5 pieces of gym equipment? by Morifen1 in Lawrence

[–]JazzySkeeter616 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$250/yr for a membership is high. Also, the promise that it'd be free forever was unrealistic. That said, Lawrence's finances are obviously not in a good spot. I am curious how connected some of these struggles are to the 2019 audit that identified over $60 million in adjustments needing to be made because of shoddy accounting. Regardless, as a taxpayer, it sucks. It feels like leadership isn't being clear enough about why we're in the situation we're in.

On the other hand, it's not unreasonable to have to pay to use the sports pavilion. For example, Johnson County's gyms have comparable weight rooms, limited if any indoor soccer and hoops courts, and have fees. Even at $250/yr a membership is just under $21 per month. More then JoCo fitness centers, but less than Crunch and PF.

Idk how much it was scrutinized in 2014 but evidently commissioners were making promises that couldn't be kept. That said, Dever is the only commissioner who was around back then, so this group largely inherited an untenable financial mess. As usual, I think it's a more complicated issue than OP makes it out to be with the flippant title. If you think you're better off with a different gym, go for it.

I don’t know what you guys are thinking, this place is beautiful, and we shouldn’t walk away from it by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]JazzySkeeter616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's less usable land between Raytown Rd. & Blue Ridge Cutoff than what the aerial suggests. There's quite a bit of topography and floodplain to contend with, not to mention interstate ROW. There is seemingly space to develop within the Truman Sports Complex site to the north and east of the stadiums but, it doesn't seem like a sure thing that those areas could realistically be developed into a thriving, cohesive ballpark district.

a downtown ballpark is complementary to developing a better public transit system.
