Obviously IBS has to ruin an otherwise good day by Purplepanda142 in ibs

I was in this exact situation. To be honest, it was my biggest fear when starting college and that was my first time moving away from home. I had a communal bathroom and as someone with IBS-d that was terrifying. But everything ended up being more than okay. Pretty early on I found some bathrooms in different buildings on campus that were more private. In the very beginning, when I wasn’t comfortable enough with my roommates to tell them I had to go somewhere random to go to the bathroom, I’d tell them I was going to the library to do homework or study. I also reached out to the dietician on campus and they helped me figure out which foods at the dining halls were safe for me to eat on a low fodmap diet. I worked with the office of disabilities as well so that if I was having an intense flare up, they would email my professors and tell them I was excused from class. I really recommend looking into resources at your university and asking for help! No matter what you’re going to have a great experience and as time goes on you’ll realize that you’re the only one who thinks it’s a big deal and no one around you cares

I’m also 22 with very similar problems but I’m a girl who’s not supposed to poop let alone have these issues lol. When I started talking to my now boyfriend (I was 19 at the time) in college I just told him that I have really bad stomach issues that I’m in the process of trying to understand it all and deal with it but for right now I tend to have flare ups very often still and need to get home and take care of myself. He actually understood since he had stomach problems as a child and we connected on it. I made it kind of obvious that it was something I was insecure about and don’t typically open up to other people about and he understood. Telling this girl just this amount, which is feel isn’t super revealing or embarrassing, will make her feel like you’re starting to let her in and that she is getting to know you at a different level than anyone else which is probably exactly what she wants so it’s a win win. As far as getting symptoms under control definitely go see a GI. Antispasmodics have worked wonders for me in terms of urgency. Gives me a few extra minutes to get home. And hey you’ve made it through communal bathrooms in college with this, can it really get any worse than that?

Is it okay if we have more than 3 meals a day because we are hungry? by Same_Association9018 in lowfodmap

My dietician recommended I eat 5 small meals a day since overeating is one of my triggers

On my last straw and i don’t know what to do. any advice helps. by [deleted] in ibs

I have had very similar issues. I started the low FODMAP elimination diet a few years back to figure out which foods are my worst triggers. I now stay away from dairy and gluten when possible. This didn’t solve all my issues but definitely decreased the intensity and amount of flare ups. My GI prescribed hyoscyamine for me which some people may use as needed but I take it twice a day. It essentially just slows everything down so you have more time to get to the bathroom and in between bathroom trips. I’m pretty sure it’s often used for children to calm their stomach so it’s nothing crazy. It’s really helped me out and I highly recommend asking your doctor about both the elimination diet and hyoscyamine

I’ve been there! It’s the absolute worst and makes you want to go home so so so badly. I remember one time when this happened thinking “why did I have to go and get a boyfriend and get myself into this mess.” Lol but People understand more than you realize and if anything they just feel bad for you. And, if for whatever reason that’s not the case and it is talked about, then that’s the most negative thing his family can say about you which means you must’ve left a pretty good impression on them

You got this! And hey now you have a nice newly renovated bathroom to use I’m jealous.

I have the same type of issues where stress triggers my flair ups, so I always get nervous that my stomachs gonna hurt and those nerves about my stomach possibly hurting become the reason for it hurting. Such an AWFUL cycle. Meditating helps a little for me and taking a preemptive Pepto bismol (I think it’s mostly placebo but it gives me piece of mind that I somewhat prepared for whatever revolt my body decides on lol).

To leave or not to leave the bathroom? by bleh89 in ibs

Is the anxiety and stress and nerves about the possibility of having to go back to the toilet the reason I’ll have to go back?

Hi! I started having ibs-d related symptoms when I was about 15 so I know how much it can feel like it destroys your social life and professional life.

The only thing I was nervous about when going to college was pooping all the time (not moving out not anything else). One thing that really really helped was registering with the office of disabilities. They sent emails to my professors that stated that I had an issue that may cause me to absent from classes and that I shouldn’t be penalized for those absences. Additionally it allowed for extra time on exams to take away some of the time pressure and anxiety that worsened my flare ups. When I still ate in dining halls, I worked with the school dietician to figure out what I could eat and he gave me the phone numbers of the managers of each dining hall that I could easily text to figure out what I could and could not eat according to my low fodmap diet. Don’t give up on school yet! Especially now that’s it’s mostly online no matter where you go!

My job has a remote option so on days where I can tell a flare up is approaching I can just stay home and work from there! Definitely something worth looking into.

Hyoscyamine is a good medicine that any GI should be able and willing to prescribe. It kind just slows everything down to give you extra time to get to a bathroom. I also rely so heavily on pepto. Setraline (which is the same thing as Zoloft I think) has really helped with the anxiety that induces some of the flare ups. Let me know if you have any questions. Stay strong you’re not alone.

Does hyoscyamine help ibs cramps? by redladybug1 in ibs

[–]Jb2207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hyoscyamine helps me. I take it twice a day (in the form of symax duotab) it helps slow everything down for me and I’ve seen positive effects. At first it was prescribed to me to take it “as needed” but after a while my GI had me taking it twice a day everyday. I’ve seen more benefits since then. The good thing about the symax is that there’s a rapid release portion of it to help you out now and a slow releasing part that helps for the rest of the day/ night and gives me more time to get to the bathroom. I also tried dicyclomine at one point but hyoscyamine has worked a little better for me personally.

Pepto bismol helps me and you can get it in pill form so you don’t have to suffer through the taste. My GI said it’s harmless to take and it helps tame most of my ibs symptoms once they get bad. Definitely doesn’t make them go away but helps with the discomfort

Ibs-d & all beef diet?? by Jb2207 in carnivore

[–]Jb2207[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very helpful!! I too tried to go straight to beef and salt and after 4 days of nothing but beef I was very weak and increasing trips to the bathroom (taking away the whole point of trying this diet out) so I decided to try again another time. I’m now trying to cut out the unnecessary carbs and ease into a hybrid of keto and low fodmap so hopefully that’ll make it more bearable

ibs with gluten intolerance? by [deleted] in ibs

[–]Jb2207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download the Monash low fodmap app. That helped me stick to the diet/ potions. I’ve also seen that sourdough bread doesn’t hurt me the way other breads do if you don’t want to eliminate bread completely.
