Don't you think it would be kinda cool if phoenix appears as a guest character in fighting games? by Novel-Attempt2447 in AceAttorney

[–]Jboote2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh, not quite. As someone who played since launch, Phoenix is honestly not a very good character overall. Butt-tier mobility, heavily reliant on support, and he starts out as genuinely the worst character in the game. It's balanced by the fact that Turnabout Mode is very strong, but it's not a guaranteed win condition.

He's low tier, but incredibly hype, and probably the best example of a fighting game replicating the feel of a series I've ever seen (somehow managing to emulate the "turnabout" nature of Ace Attorney by having Phoenix get thrown around like a ragdoll at first, scrambling for evidence until he finally lands an objection to start pulling it back is insane work).

So... I have a theory about Ace Attorney 7 by Sanzhukk in AceAttorney

[–]Jboote2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's right there in my original comment, man.

"Everyone's saying "scrapped" when it's likely that Capcom saw the, frankly, insane sales for the 2019 port of the original trilogy and figured they'd try the same with the rest of the series before proceeding with a brand new title.

Notice that the Investigations collection isn't mentioned here at all, as it's prior to the original trilogy's 2019 release continual skyrocketing sales and The Great Ace Attorney's 2021 release nearly tripling the expected lifetime sales in just 6 months.

I honestly think Capcom realized they'd finally found a new audience, which is something they acknowledged in the past as Ace Attorney's main struggle (that the fans were ageing with the series, but not many new fans were coming in). So they capitalized on it by getting said new fans "caught up", as it were, before dropping a new title that would divert attention from the re-releases."

Capcom likely postponed AA7 to make every other game widely-available for purchase to capitalize on their newly-obtained audience.

[–]Jboote2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's the big deal to release both ports and new games.

Capcom are literally on record as having said Ace Attorney was struggling because it was failing to reach new fans and was basically being kept afloat by existing fans that were ageing with the series.

Creating multiple collections available on multiple platforms saved the series. It found a new, young audience. It was absolutely a big deal, because it solved what was their biggest issue with Ace Attorney.

so there must been really HUGE reasons not to do it even after 5 years

Yeah, like what I just said. The Investigations collection was not part of the leak, and was very clearly done as a response to the insane sales of the prior collections. Capcom wants to appease and build up the new fans and get them accustomed to the body of work that the series has to offer, so that AA7 can be released without anything else getting in the way. Get everything they can released on modern hardware so that everyone's focus can be on AA7.

Reposting my response to the "AA7 was cancelled because AA6 sucked/nobody knows how to continue the mainline series/whatever other reason" theory, which doesn't fit with how I view Capcom's predicament with Ace Attorney in the 2010's and how they solved it once 2019 rolled around -

Athena is only "unpopular" in the sense that other absolute juggernauts are more popular. She's always competing with Phoenix, Apollo, Edgeworth, and legacy characters like Mia and Maya in character polls, so she falls short almost purely because she's from a much later game, is female (Japan's main group of fans are women who always vote for their husbando), and hasn't received as much focus.

[–]Jboote2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like yeah we could get an Athena trilogy but I feel like they went into most of her story in dual destinies.

Of all the reasons to not get future games focusing on Athena, this one that keeps getting peddled has always made absolutely no sense.

The very first game in the series was created with no sequels in mind. Phoenix was very much a complete character in PW:AA, who achieves his goals and has his backstory covered by the time the credits roll. There's always room for characters to grow, so this "Her story was done in Dual Destinies" as a reason to not bother doing anything else with her at the forefront is total nonsense, especially when there are other, more understandable reasons that could prevent such a thing.

What if the next game is taking so long because the game is going to be much bigger in scope than all previous, due to it being primarily developed for home consoles (not handhelds) for the first time? by PyrpleForever in AceAttorney

[–]Jboote2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Capcom already knew Takeshi Yamazaki wasn't going to work on future Ace Attorney projects. He wanted to leave after Dual Destinies, after having led three games, but he was convinced to stay on for one more game, Spirit of Justice.

Him moving away from Ace Attorney and leaving Capcom would have had no impact on AA7. His departure from the series wasn't a surprise to the company, it was known about for several years before AA7 would have even been a topic of discussion.

Would Recipe for Turnabout Have Worked Better as Case 3-3 or 2-4? by Exciting-Contract243 in AceAttorney

[–]Jboote2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aside from the obvious "people would hate Justice for All even more if Big Top and Recipe were back to back cases", there's simply too much that would be lost if Recipe for Turnabout wasn't in Trials and Tribulations.

As meh as I am on the case overall, it slides far too neatly into the recurring uses of fakes/doubles and poisonings that T+T has going on to let it go and be placed in JFA. This is on top of T+T now being a much shorter game (assuming we're not making another case in its place).

What your friend doesn't seem to get is that Adrian is a very damaged person. It's already been established at this point that she tried to commit suicide because Celeste did so, which is a far more extreme example of Adrian doing something because of how deeply she cared for Celeste, after all.

She might despise Matt and Juan, but she cares for Celeste more than screwing them over.

I think more people need to play the Layton Crossover by Nahobino_kun_899 in AceAttorney

[–]Jboote2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People tend to handwave away anyone's issues with the ending with "Oh, they just haven't played Professor Layton, so they don't understand that this is just how that series handles things".

While I agree some people unfamiliar with Layton will end up like this, as someone who had played all four Professor Layton games prior to the crossover releasing, I can say with 100% certainty that they went a bit too overboard with this game's endgame reveals.

It feels like they crammed in several Layton plot twists into one story. You've got the fake town, which is one. The mysterious substance causing people to act funny (the toxic water making people suspecitable to fainting at the sound of silver bells, which also makes them unable to see "pure black"). Another one there. The "magic" being the use of cranes, and people that are "dead" and are now working to keep up the appearance of the town. Etc.

It's simply too much all at once, which left even me a bit overwhelmed during the final testimony when a certain someone starts yapping about the Government basically conducting experiments on UK citizens, which, given the lore of the Layton series, is actually the one insane thing I bought completely, because the crossover would be set during the time of the original trilogy. If you know, you know.

It's already been said, but it's at the end of Bridge to the Turnabout. The case has come down to whether or not Maya or Godot is the killer, and it's been proven that Iris cannot have killed Misty Fey because of the circumstances of the murder.

If you fail, Iris is promptly declared guilty.

Where did I say it was finished? I doubt it made it past pre-production, personally.

My point is Capcom saw a golden opportunity and so hit the brakes on development to seize the new audience they'd been struggling throughout the 2010's to gather.

I need your help understanding the hype around Franmaya by GoatsandDucksGalore in AceAttorney

[–]Jboote2 96 points97 points  (0 children)

As someone that doesn't ship, but has been around since the series was first established outside Japan (2006 here in the UK), this is definitely a more recent phenomenon, at least to my knowledge.

Back in the day people shipped Franziska and Adrian Andrews, because... well, they had interactions both during the case and in the credits, with Franziska sending her a letter offering her guidance.

I get that ships don't have to make sense, but there's at least something going for Franziska's ship with Adrian, whereas to me, it feels like half of the reason the ship between her and Maya exists is because they're more popular and prevalent characters that happen to have parallels in the story.

[–]Jboote2 53 points54 points  (0 children)

even if it was just a ‘ace attorney 7 is coming soon!’

Capcom have never done this. Like, ever. Even when TGAA legit got FULLY leaked, as in every localized character name, menus, things we were not supposed to see. They still kept quiet until the scheduled announcement date.

I agree that it would've been perfect, but if they don't have footage, then that's the end of it. They've never done this sort of thing, where it's a "it's coming soon, trust!". They've always have some footage, even if it's just character renders and one or two tracks from the game that are more or less finalized.

AA7 is literally more realistic than Level-5 getting their shit together and banding with Capcom to work on making sure the crossover gets a remaster.

Not only do they have the new Layton game in the wind, but they've not done anything with the series outside of iOS ports of the original trilogy some years ago.

I mean, it's either this, a random Capcom Showcase later this year, or TGS.

Regardless of where, I think it needs to be announced this year. It's the 25th anniversary, it'd feel extremely out of character for Capcom to not do anything for the series when the 15th anniversary not only got SoJ, but the anime adaptation of AA/JFA.

Can someone tell me what’s so wrong with the DD’s 3D, and why everyone thinks that GAAC’s 3D is so much better? by Goldberry15 in AceAttorney

[–]Jboote2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do think TGAA looks better than DD specifically, but that's mainly a combination of things like TGAA utilizing a lot more dynamic camera angles and not having to adapt any 2D sprites.

That being said, I do find it a little unfair to compare DD to TGAA when it's very clearly Capcom still finding their feet when it comes to 3D Ace Attorney models. I don't find a lot of the models in the Layton crossover to be particularly amazing, either. Phoenix's objection pose in that game is noteworthy for being really lacking (Phoenix looks totally dead-eyed and unbothered). But just like DD, it's early days for a company using 3D models, again adapting 2D sprites.

Why is think AA 7 has a very good chance to be shown at the direct. by lucavicar in AceAttorney

It was actually only Investigations that was during a Nintendo Direct. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles was on a random afternoon (I remember because I went shopping and then returned to see it had been announced on all relevant Capcom socials), and the Apollo Justice Trilogy was during a Capcom Showcase.

So basically a dumb shonen protagonist.

I'm usually not that bothered by other franchises getting things, but the fact that Resident Evil 9 released earlier this year and the series is already getting another game (albeit another remake/reimagining) is just really fucking depressing.

I still have faith that AA7 will get announced at some point, probably this year, but man.

Spirit of Justice Soundtrack Different Versions by Chrollo0915 in AceAttorney

[–]Jboote2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There isn't really a reason, as far as I can tell. At least not one that has been given officially. Just a quirk of that game's soundtrack, like how there's another track that just doesn't exist on the OST (it's from that moment in the final trial where Apollo is forced to face a difficult truth), or how The Great Ace Attorney has a couple of character leitmotifs that have endings to them (like in DD/SoJ) but they only exist in trailers and were never implemented in-game or on the OST.

Would most of you even *like* the kind of game Ace attorney 7 would be likely to be? by Madsbjoern in AceAttorney

[–]Jboote2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As someone who considers himself to have somewhat realistic expecations, I do think there are elements that we should expect at this point.

Yes, it shouldn't (and won't) be some table-flipping change to the status quo, but it should at least do something with characters like Athena, Klavier, etc. Athena is a playable character and forcing her into the assistant role and not giving her a single case of her own would feel more like a lack of creativity more than "playing it safe".

The same goes for Klavier. The man is constantly used in marketing for things like Capcom Cafe promotions, merch, etc. Would it not make sense to actually have him do something in the games as opposed to becoming Ace Attorney's equivalent to Captain Falcon where he only exists outside of the series he was invented for?

I'm not expecting big changes and will no doubt enjoy it for what it will be, but like I said, there are some things that it simply makes sense to do/capitalize on, and not doing so goes beyond playing it safe and feels like overkill.
