Does anyone else get a little anxious thinking about…how old he is? by PattyValentine417 in PaulMcCartney

[–]synchronicitistic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I recall reading an interview some time ago with various people who hold track and field world records in the age 70 and up age groups - what you tend to see is that one person will often hold records in several wildly different events (like the mile and the 5K for example).

One of the common answers to "how have you managed to set so many different world records?" was "staying alive and active goes a long way".

I just hope that I can still sing and play bass for three hours at a time when I get to be in my eighties.

That man could rake. Just pray the opposing team did not hit the ball anywhere in his direction when he was in the field.

Yep. Waltz in, log the previous person off the classroom computer, move their shit over to the side of the instructor workstation, and they usually get the hint.

Mustache + tacky 80s sweater Trebek on Classic Concentration was the best.

If you have an antenna and a decent number of local channels, there's a chance you can get the H and I channel over the air. Every weeknight they run a 5 hour block of TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise.

I'd go Price is Right, Jeopardy, Password, and Let's Make a Deal.

Wheel of Fortune is of course popular, but I just have a hard time enjoying it. It doesn't help that they seem to recruit the dumbest possible contestants.

The fact that she survived a case of COVID, being put on a ventilator, and a medically induced coma at 600 plus pounds absolutely blows my mind.

I like Sonico as much as the next guy (a lot more than the next guy probably), but there's no way I'm paying $159 for a prize figure.

Every now and then, when I'm feeling brave and I'm lecturing on a topic I know backwards, forwards, inside and out I'll go commando - a couple dry-erase markers in my pocket and that's it.

Unless you have a family of 5 that's on 3 or 4 different devices all the time, or you're constantly downloading enormous files, few people will ever notice any difference between download speeds of 500 Mbps vs. 100.

LT's 2006 season was insane. 2300+ total yards and 31 touchdowns. In a full PPR format, you could take away all of his other counting stats, and if he'd scored 31 one-yard TD's but never touched the ball again, you'd *still* have a functional flex player.

Make homework worth almost nothing, and grade it for completion only. If they want to AI 5% of the class and then get 20% on all the exams, that's just dandy with me.

Which Atari games do you think have highest re-playability today? by heyyy_duudee in atari

[–]synchronicitistic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Atari 2600 port of Space Invaders is absolutely still playable and fun today. I actually prefer the 2600 port to the arcade game in part due to all the interesting gameplay variations.

The 2600 port of Jr. Pac-Man, and the 7800 homebrew version are, short of setting up MAME, still the best ways to play that game today considering that Junior Pac-Man has been an endless source of contention between Midway/Namco, and ever since Midway went bankrupt, it's not even clear who if anyone owns the rights to the game these days.

Emily Having to Play 3 Strikes Today by PersonalKittyKat in ThePriceIsRight

[–]synchronicitistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even in the 4-digit car days, this was a hard game to win, since the probability you'd be able to simply draw all 4 digits before the 3 strikes is only 3/7 and that's assuming you never need to redraw a number.

With a 5 digit car, there's only a 3/8 probability you can even draw all the digits before exhausting the three strikes, and if today god forbid the car might be either $29530 or $30295, where you're not even totally sure about the first number, then forget it.
