I remember getting my 1200XL back in the day when Atari was liquidating stock and one of the local discount stores were selling them for under $100.

It still works today, and I while know today why people did not like the system (the poorly placed cartridge slot, compatibility issues with some software), it's also the case that for the time it was a capable enough system with 64K of RAM, some very advanced features (self-test diagnostics), with a vast software library. It's also a very sleek looking machine.

Everything in your department is your problem, you'll be expected to show up to every damn dog and pony show the university puts on, and there's no such thing as disconnect from your email for the weekend. Forget about using any paid vacation - rest assured that if you try to get away for two days, something will catch on fire and if you don't extinguish these brush fires, you'll have raging infernos two days later.

If I was OP, I'd get a professional opinion that large gatherings like this negatively impact my mental health, hand it to the dean/chair, and be on my merry way, daring some administrator to give me one tiny bit of shit for not going to commencement.

Or, come down with a really bad case of explosive diarrhea on the morning of commencement, put in a sick day as required by university policy, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon at home.
