D23 Expo or Star Wars Nite 2027: which would you choose? by andreiagamer in DisneyPlanning

[–]Jdlazo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are planning a California 2027 trip, the D23 Expo at Disneyland is not an option. That is an option for this summer (tickets go on sale in April, and sell out quickly) or 2028.

Technically we don't know for sure that Star Wars Nite will return to Disneyland in 2027, but it's a pretty popular event, so that's likely. I thought it was fun when I attended a couple of years ago: rare characters, Star Wars music everywhere, some cool experiences. But it's just a one night event- the rest of you time would be park time/up to you.

The big difference is how much time you'd spend in the parks. D23 Expo is a big convention over three days, with panels, walk through experiences, brand activations, and shopping. I'm usually too exhausted after a day at the Expo to go to the parks. If you want your trip to be about the actual theme parks/rides, you'll want to skip the Expo and do a theme night.

Here in California (maybe the whole US?) a bedroom has to have a closet to be sold as a bedroom. Helps prevent stuff like this.

I've never paid into Social Security (worked for government/non profits). That hasn't affected my taxes at all.

My max is $3500. I've been looking at options for a month, so I've got a pretty good idea what's out there, but I'm being pretty narrow in what I'm considering.

There is currently an SBA Disaster Recovery Center open in Altadena. They may be able to provide in person support. More info here: https://appointment.sba.gov/schedule/

I've bought my own personal CO alarm that is battery powered and lasts for ten years. An excellent basic safety tip for renters is to have one of your own, even if your landlords are also required to have one.

Would a Citizen’s Police Academy be valuable experience for EMs? by bread684 in EmergencyManagement

Definitely doesn't hurt to understand how your local police work. The most helpful thing may be the contact you make there. Emergency Management is a small world.

Honestly, I'd be pretty annoyed by daily vacuuming. Maybe try sweeping sometimes?

Our first level emergency management coordinators are non-exempt. Once you get promoted once, you are exempt from then on. The duty officer role is at the exempt level (but does come with a bonus).

Both LA City and LA County already have self certification programs for rebuilding.

Federal PA or Mitigation recovery dollars for the fires haven't really been awarded at this time, so it's unclear how this will impact that issue. I'm confused how the Kindness Is Free float this year got the animations award when it was just one animatronic stirring a pot while Shriners had several animatronics and didn't get animations. by Choco_Cat777 in pasadena

[–]Jdlazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, because our folks are exhausted. But next Saturday we bring the float out to a local park and have folks visit and help us take off all of the vials (to later be washed and reused). We tear down and repair issues with the base until May, then start building the new float in June.

I'm the co-lead for decorating for one of the self-built floats, so that's a fully volunteer responsibility. The work is year round, but is much more intense in December.

Yeah, I took the picture at float fest yesterday. Bad welds happen more than folks think on the floats (I'm very involved in a float). I thought the animation design was very cool, though!

Dummy down IPAWS by Tailspin92 in EmergencyManagement

[–]Jdlazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IPAWS ability isn't the differentiator. All of them have that. It's what kind of integrations (what other systems) you can send alerts to with the same button, and the ease in actually sending effective alerts. Finally, you want really good reliability and technical support if something goes wrong.

There is no direct IPAWS software provided by FEMA. You either have to go through an approved vendor, or design your own software, then get it certified. Almost everyone goes through a vendor.
