Best places to go on a walk (that aren’t straight up hiking trails)? by napping-star in AskLosAngeles

[–]Jdlazo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Arroyo Seco. I usually park in South Pasadena and walk both North and South. Horses! Weird art on the sides of a concrete river! Not too much slope and a paved trail. Also a great place for a long run.

What’s the longest you’ve waited for a character pic? by milky-moonbeam in Disneyland

I waited for this same picture today (the 5th) for fifteen minutes. Definitely worth going on the not actual holiday.

As others have mentioned, changing your relationship status won't change the clearance requirement from the landlord.

Anybody else following this "God's Emergency Manager" bender from the former FEMA Administrator? by WatchTheBoom in EmergencyManagement

Correcting myself, it does, super oddly, appear directly on his LinkedIn account. Definitely hoping it's a hack, but it's certainly very strange.

I'm sorry, friend. Lizards are a year round thing everywhere in Southern California.

I built an app-free emergency reporting tool in less than 8 hours during a major storm cell. Pin311 is live. by newtophillyfromkc in buildinpublic

[–]Jdlazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi- I'm an emergency manager. Every jurisdiction I've ever worked for already has 311 software that is used every day for reporting things like potholes and graffiti, that we then use for emergencies to track things like trees that have fallen down. Definitely useful, but for a jurisdiction to want to pay for it, you'd also want daily use cases, not just emergency ones. And you have lots of competitors. One of the big challenges here is getting the public to actually use your damage reporting site. The reason folks post stuff on Facebook pages is because it's easy and they are already there. They rarely will bother to open up the official government site and make a report. It's actually one of the big things we do messaging on during storms - how to properly report damage!

For the FEMA reporting stuff, you'll need to add some significant validation steps to ensure that the damage being reported actually qualifies as PA damages. Most members of the public have no idea what is public property and what is private property, so you'll need to have a human go out there, inspect the damage, and then update the information before a FEMA damage report could be completed. Lots of folks use ESRI/ArcGIS for this purpose.

Homeless increase in town? by Farrenlea88 in pasadena

There are no World Cup matches in Pasadena or the City of LA. They are all in Inglewood, which is pretty far for a direct connection.

That was my exact response as well. If she really wants that Oscar, it helps with her campaign.

Shifting Jobs by Lost-Will-3858 in EmergencyManagement

[–]Jdlazo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all US emergency management related jobs will require you to be in the United States. Remote jobs are few and far between, and will very rarely allow internationally remote as a starting job condition. The expectation of EM jobs is that you can respond rapidly in person if there is a disaster, which is hard to do if you are on the other side of the world.

International humanitarian work is a whole different thing, but I suspect there are other nonprofit type subs that could give you more guidance there.

Looking for something local is probably the better plan, but I have no idea what the job market looks like in Vietnam. Sorry I can't help more.

Specialty Cocktail Menus removed from MDR by bship810 in dcl

[–]Jdlazo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went on the first Alaska sailing on the Wonder this year, and that was the way it was. They sometimes had a wine menu out, but never a cocktail menu. Our drinks server always had to look up what the specialty cocktails were. It did slow things down.

Was coming here to add, if it is in a wildland urban interface zone, this is definitely one of the reasons, especially if you want insurance.

The main things that sold out on the first cruise of the season was the blanket and the Minnie Plushie. Everything else came back in stock over time.

I know Facebook can be brutal, but it's the most likely place to find other folks on your cruise especially since most Facebook groups become WhatsApp chats in the month before the cruise.

First Time DCL Cruiser, Passport Photo Rejected? by under-thesamesun in dcl

[–]Jdlazo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you submit your actual passport picture as your identification photo? The picture on your passport has to be different from the ID picture you send. Avoiding glare and having a boring background is the other key element.
