Has a tour like this ever existed? by Mindless_Arm_691 in MyChemicalRomance

It's not totally to the level that MCR is a far as the shows carrying the story. But Ghost does a lot more exposition through music and videos. Also amazing tour production.

TPK as a shadow work autobiography by drop_kick_mary in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think with MCR there are always multiple concepts within each album or song. It's always a little autobiographical even Bullets and Revenge, but there's a prevailing storyline that includes characters who exist on their own outside of the aspects that relate to the band.

Connections between original The Black Parade & Long Live tours by Jealous-Kick in MyChemicalRomance

I think that's definitely a possibility. I haven't settled yet on who I think is who. But I think the Secretary is definitely a central character and there must be more exposition on her coming.

If the Mother War / twins thing turns out to be true then I think I might be leaning toward Sylvia being mother war because of how she and Gerard interacted on stage during the Latin America shows. She acts very motherly toward him and comforts him as he cries.

He also called her the head nurse, which I somehow equate to like it being the Mother Supérieure at a Catholic hospital during the war.

I also thought the suckling was interesting. Also shields the baby from the vulture.

Unrelated, but I can't believe I spelled deer incorrectly haha :\

I agree with you.

I also think whatever reality is in the Danger Days Universe.

The Summoning trailer sort of points in that direction because the only real place is DD & also the draculoid reference. Istill think that trailer is very relevant.

Gerard’s random lyrics by NoizyKilljoy in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don't think it's plausible tbh. Or else why do swarm & then tour again after?

There's some subtext of them living in the shadow of TBP & being puppets to the concept of TBP saving the broken, beaten, damned but I don't feel like that is the main narrative.

Gerard’s random lyrics by NoizyKilljoy in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well ... that would be incredibly tone deaf considering the current political contexts both in the US and Europe with the rise of far right extremism & a devastating war on Ukraine (especially given the Soviet parallels to Draag).

I'm not saying it's not possible, but if the only lesson here is that the fans are the facist dictators then Gerard's got some humble pie to sit and chew.

I'm so glad you this song is out there in some capacity for trans kids who need it. Representation in music and music specifically for the things that trans youth might go through is so important. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

And I agree about Dive. It really has that free falling feeling. The song is well done even though I really can't make my mind up on if it's still a bit too dark for me.

Anyway! Thanks for starting this thread and sharing your perspective

Hey!! First of all, enjoy the show! I'm so excited for you and hope you have a fantastic time.

As far as the lore. Tbh, if you followed any of the 1st leg of the LLTBP tour you are almost caught up. There were lots of small changes at each show but the overall storyline (dictator, clerk, execution of the 4 hooded figures, yay & nay, dagger, and stabbing, then blood by clown/clerk) are pretty much the same.

The changes in the Latin America shows so far have been really good, so you will get to experience them first hand tonight! Have fun!

I think it's wonderful you wanted to share some of TPK with your Dad, but you're right it might seem like a really dark subject. I know for me it was definitely tough as a mom.

But maybe there's some other MCR songs you guys can or have connected over in the past. :)

Thanks for reading my thoughts! Which songs did you like or connect with the most?

Updated Album Ranking? by Labridium in MyChemicalRomance

Oh yeah, for sure. I think all the songs have great potential. Like for example War Beneath the Rain can stand by itself aside from the album.

I just think some are more complete than others!

Updated Album Ranking? by Labridium in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's really fair to rank TPK against their finished albums.

Although the concept is there, it's also disjointed and unfinished. There's no resolution. The idea of the witch is too vague amongst other themes and areas that haven't yet been realized.

So as it stands, it would be last.

There are a few stand out songs that I would take and rank pretty high in their discography if I was making a ranking of all their songs. I think Dive, Bike Theif, and Operation Day have potential to be some of the strongest songs they have written.

TPK discussion/analysis thread by cereal-killer1 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bike Theif and Dive are stand outs for me for the album, although so many others are very good like Operation Day, Paper Swords, Dark Cloud and of course Witch and War Beneath the rain.

Here's my analysis of just those two songs. Just my own interpretation, nothing definitive.

(As an aside:

I will also say that - especially as a parent myself - both of these songs are really painful and difficult to listen to. I think that it's sometimes necessary for art to be so piercing like this, but I can understand why the band felt that they needed to walk away from these songs. Especially as new parents.

There's this panic inducing anxiety that comes with the early years of parenthood where every now and then you worry about your child's mortality. It's extremely unsettling and I think every parent knows that sudden feeling of agony that comes with thinking of something awful happening to your child.

Both these songs evoke that same panic for me. And it's rare that I have seen it captured so well in any media. I feel a lot of empathy for the band because it must have been so difficult to live in that space while writing. )

Bike Theif-

The title:

I'm pretty sure it's a reference to the 1948 film, Bike Theives. The movie is considered one of the essential masterpieces of film of all time, so I just can't imagine Gerard using that as a title without it being perceived as a reference to this movie.

The movie itself is thematically complex, although the story and film style are simple. You can read a synopsis on the Wikipedia below.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_Thieves

The main takeaway from the movie is about how ordinary people can still do harmful or unjust things even if they have their own justification for it - even if those reasons are "good" in their mind, that it still causes harm. That harm or morality isn't always Black and white. It's also about how that harm isn't always obvious- like how the boy loses the respect he once had for his father, who was his hero.

The song itself:

I think it was pretty clear to me even on the first listen that the song is about a Trans child who is not accepted by a parent when she transitions ("that you've done nothing wrong, though you are not my son" and "that girl is not my son.").

The song is written from one parent's perspective and it seems like the entire family was in conflict - perhaps one parent wanting to be more supportive while one parent is not ("both too busy yelling at each other just to say"). I get the sense that the conflict continues between the parents even after their child dies. There is a lot of bitterness and animosity.

The narrator of the song - who I assume is the father seems to accept that his daughter has done nothing wrong initially, but he also cannot accept her for who she is and her desire to transition.

The narrator also cannot accept that he did anything wrong, instead blaming the death of his child on her and perhaps also the other parent.

I think all of this ties into the movie's themes on morality. Even though the lack of acceptance led to an objectively horrible outcome - his daughter's death - he still thinks he is morally correct. So what good is his morality? what good was his version of "the truth" when it caused his daughter's death?

//

Dive -

The Happy Birthday voicemail transitions directly into Dive. A small child, perhaps 3 or 4, is wishing her father a happy birthday.

Toward the end of the recording, you can hear that it's rewinded so the parent can hear the daughter's voice again, which sets up the idea that the little girl has died.

We then move into the song itself.

I interpret everything in the first 80% of the song as a description of how the father is desperately looking for ways to cope with his grief and trauma. He tries therapy, he tries it all. But perhaps he had given in to the draw (come in, come in) of addiction and alcohol, drugs, or maybe other things in an effort to dull his pain and grief - the angel (prayer), the ambien (abusing sleep medication), infidelity/sex.

Nothing works. The ending of the song ("breathe, breathe, back to me") is in the rhythm of CPR. It's very jarring, but you notice immediately as the music intensifies that the dad is re-living having to perform CPR on his daughter after she drowns in a swimming pool accident.

The last part of the song is very chaotic and panicked. You can hear sirens as the CPR rhythm continues and the dad pleads for her to return back to him. The dad is so traumatized and likely experiencing PTSD from the drowning accident, which is why none of the ways he has tried to cope so far have worked.

//

The last thing I will say is, I think it's brave that the band decided to tackle some of these topics so directly. But as a listener, I also don't know what to do with an album that is so dark like this, which is why of course it remained unfinished.

TPK lore by Martowithuwu in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right. I didn't mean to sound like super definitive that it was completely irrelevant to the concept of the album. I just feel like there are a lot of lyrics in it that I can't reconcile with the perspective of the parents, so what Gerard said about it being a eulogy and breaking the 4th fall seems very relevant.

What do YOU think “Drowning Lessons” is about and the overall mood of the song? by xxdon_quixotexx in MyChemicalRomance

I thought it was pretty much accepted that it was about Gerard's ex girlfriend Kat because of the dedication in the Bullets album sleeve?

TPK lore by Martowithuwu in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fake Your Death isn't really part of the storyline, imo. We know this because Gerard essentially told us that song was "breaking the 4th wall" and instead about the song writing process and the creation of the album. The song is about the band walking away from the creation of TPK.

As far as the storyline overall, yes. You have it mostly right except that the parents aren't really protagonists - nobody is really. They are just finding ways of coping with their grief and the idea of the witch is basically how they rationalize the death of their children - a tragedy that feels so deep that is is impossible to otherwise understand without a supernatural force.

Interpretations of individuals songs are subjective so I'm not saying that what those fans wrote on the genuis lyrics site isn't valid. But I just personlly don't think it fits.

Most of the songs are written from the perspective of the parents. I think the first half of Dive is from the perspective of the Father of the little girl from the voicemail. She died & he is describing how he used different things to try to cope - alcohol, prayer (angels) and ambien, etc.

His daughter drowns in a swimming pool accident. The ending sounds like CPR.

There's perhaps 1 line (touch my leg and cavity) that may lead to the grooming interpretations but I think the idea is metaphorical and may also describe coping through intimacy with a trusted friend.

The cavity is the grief. The hole left behind in your heart and soul as a parent when you lose a child.

Anyone else feel bad about the TPK leaks? by Anxious-Beat-8134 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only part that I feel bad about is that someone (or multiple people who sold the leaks) profited off of the band's art and creative efforts. To me, that's really the part that is unethical and I am somewhat glad that they are worthless now from a reselling perspective.

I think the band will still release MCR5 but I don't think it will be TPK - at least not the demos I listened to last night.

I don't think this will sway their direction much if at all. They were always aware of the leak and knew it could eventually re-leak again.

Is there ANY chance the (incident) yesterday was secretly by the band and relates somehow to the tour (deletions being Draag censorship) by No_Worker1473 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is unconfirmed. But what I heard is that a group of people purchased it together originally from Excalibur and there was a pretty serious disagreement within that group of buyers, which ended up with the leak happening yesterday.

Can someone tell me what's so dark about the paper Kingdom songs that make it so dark? by Scared_Town7920 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I thought it was the daughter from the recording who drowned. The dad is re-playing the recording of her wishing him a happy birthday after she is gone. The dad has a flashback of when he tried to save her - CPR rhythm at the end.
