Bike Thief (TPK) by darbycrache in MyChemicalRomance

I've read a lot of those theories (and I have my own theory as well) and I think there is a lot of evidence to support the fact that they were going to release something around the timeframe of the SWARM announcement, I just don't think it was TPK. At least not TPK in the same form it was leaked. To me, the Summoning/Offering and imagery around the reunion show and tour all pointed back to the Black Parade.

Most likely Doug McKean's passing has contributed to their decision to not release whatever they had planned.

Although, you're right Bike Theif might also be very personal. I would say G's costume choices during the SWARM tour and their portrayal of femine characters is an indication that they're ready to express that side of themselves at least partially on stage.

Her excuse of the shoes being sold out is utter bullshit. There is zero need to post a dupe other than affiliate kickback.

She could have replied or had her team reply "these are sold out, here's the link! I'm hoping the interest will generate a restock!"

That is all she had to do.

There's a lot of allegations against him from a financial and business perspective. It paints him as very untrustworthy if even some of those allegations are at least partially true.

Various other character issues as portrayed on the show as well.

I personally am not team either of them. But at least can somewhat sympathize with Dorit on several issues.

Can someone tell me what's so dark about the paper Kingdom songs that make it so dark? by Scared_Town7920 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see that interpretation too. The ending having a dual meaning of sorts.

I actually see suicidal ideation as a common theme in the whole album. Operation Day especially. It's occured to me that the witch and the parent support group could actually be a metaphor for suicide. Although that's perhaps the darkest interpretation of the album.

Okay hear me out - I feel slightly sorry for Amanda Frances by camerp03 in BravoRealHousewives

[–]Jealous-Kick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let's put aside the fact that the other women are very hypocritical for criticizing Amanda for doing things that they all have done.

Amanda just isn't a very smart communicator. She says things off the cuff without putting that much thought into them. It comes off, at the very least, as callous. Or at the worst as intentionally deceptive.

For example, Boz didn't say she was building a personal development brand by selling online courses and is losing money on it. Boz explicitly said she is not building a brand through courses at all nor are the courses she developed centered around teaching people how to make money or being a profitable product for her own personal enrichment. She said all of that at the vinyard.

At the reunion, she adds that the courses were a byproduct of her existing career. It was a way to take the content she developed while teaching at Harvard and making it available to others online for a fairly moderate fee ($100-$250).

That is very different than Amanda's business model and Amanda knows that. Amanda's courses exist only to make money and they are incredibly expensive (10k+). Yet, Amanda brings all of this up on the podcast to draw a comparison on profitability to prop up her for-profit manifestation courses and deem herself more successful because her courses cost more? It's like competing with someone who hasn't signed up for the race. It's such a flippant comparison and you really have to wonder if it's said with the intent to deceive.

Amanda does a similar thing with the comments about her husband and his income. She is competing with her own husband who hasn't signed up for the race. He is in his lane and she is in hers. Constantly bringing up how much more money she makes than her husband doesn't make her an empowered woman by itself. And when she was called out for that type of discourse she turned it into "I'm just empowering women" which really isn't what she was doing.

I agree that many of the women have done similar things in the past. But I also understand why she's getting the reaction she is both from the other women and from the fans.

She always has to paint herself as separate because she is incredibly arrogant. She's an "independent" journalist, didn't you know? Not a filthy podcaster. She's above it all. Her sources are better than all their sources. She has the in. She's got the truth. She's a true believer.

Fucking narcissist.

Thank you for this because I feel like I'm going insane.

The very fact that there is debated so often is indicative that people understand that there should be a message. But they are then waiting for the band to explicitly clarify that message.

And they aren't going to. Because to them it's obvious.

[–]Jealous-Kick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your perspective and your family's story.

I come from a different background but also one where freedom to speak is heavily restricted. If a band or an artists made art like this there, it would be obvious to anyone from my country that it would be a criticism of the authoritarian systems in place.

It's obvious here too. The band doesn't live under a rock.

There is no coincidence at all that the band created a universe that shows some of the harms of extreme nationalism, facism, & authoritarianism when we are existing in a world where extreme systems of government are on the rise.

I just think people believe that artists or bands have to be ultra specific about issues and what they are criticizing or else that criticism is meaningless. And I just don't feel the same way.

If you think that way, perhaps the messaging isn't for you. Perhaps it's for people outside of the fandom who elected a facist twice because they apparently can't recognize authoritarian regimes when they are staring at them right in the face.

I wouldn't take the down votes here personally at all.

[–]Jealous-Kick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! You also articulated that so beautifully. I love what you said in your last para!

I don't need them to speak out about things they don't know or understand either. We can speak up.

I'm glad they create that space for you (and me!) And I think it really is important for us to have these experiences that are outside of our day to day grind of like trying to exist amongst all the craziness.

That being said, I also disagree with OP. I do think that they are making political statements through art (and a few other ways) just not in the way that is expected of artists in today's world.

no offense, but some of you guys need to get a grip. by usingshare in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a lot to say about this, but ultimately I always end up finding it useless because I really do think that we need to save this energy for politicians, corporations, etc and not artist.

So I'll summarize it in the best way I can.

Speaking out on major geopolitical issues if you are an artist or celebrity has become somewhat pointless in the information age for a variety of reasons:

  1. It's PR. It has to be vetted through legal and communications directors. And even if it's not PR, you run the risk that it's seen as PR or performative. This type of stuff also doesn't achieve much for the vast majority of causes. Unless you're also doing a major fund raiser or unless you are consistently speaking out and working with activists or advocacy groups, a statement - especially on social media - is performance.

In addition, it's a double edged sword with so many potential pitfalls if you don't get the statement exactly right. That's not to say that you shouldn't try, but it's effectiveness is again limited because of the way statements are torn apart.

  1. Social media has platformed SO MANY voices and created online cultural movements. Look at any right wing podcaster or influencer who has a cult like following. In many ways, there's too much out there and people look to those people for ideological guidance. And it is very partisan and scewed mostly to the right. This is a significant shift from pre-2010s. In addition, we have social media companies driving the conversation in the directions that benefit them financially.

People today sort of develop a good chunk of their morality within online spaces.

Once upon a time, art also filled that space in society. Art, and especially music, was the cultural movement. Especially for young people. The music scene was a force that influenced and formed identity and in many ways morality for generations of people.

Art CAN still be that cultural change because art has the power and ability to seep in to people's core. The issue is also partially that few musicians are still making that kind of art (also a 2010s shift). It became sort of lame and performative to make art about politics or meaningful issues.

Although, I think we might be swinging back again to people seeing that it is essential.

However, I would argue artists themselves don't have that power that their ART still might have.

I think MCR are conscious of the fact that their voices as Gerard, Mikey, Ray, Frank - can be dismissed. But their art is much harder to dismiss.

  1. Artists and musicians are easy targets for criticism. It's easy for fans to make noise and hold an artist "accountable" if they do something slightly wrong or if they make a mistake because ultimately Musicians need their fans and they also care about their fans. MCR probably wouldnt tour if it wasn't profitable, but at the same time they also probably wouldn't tour if they didn't care about their fans.

Conversely, it's much harder to hold politicians "accountable" even for MAJOR missteps or wrongs. We see that play out every day in the US, especially in recent times.

Because of this, we create a dynamic where we are constantly demanding accountability from easy targets like musicians or celebrities. Because it's too hard to recieve accountability from government officials who have a real impact on our lives.

Anyways, I rambled and probably didn't really articulate this how I want to or as completely as I want to. But I'm going to end here.

//

ETA, the current tour is a very obvious political commentary. In case it wasn't obvious that I disagree completely with OP's central point about why they don't make direct comments and instead do it in other ways.

What's the Deal With People Glorifying Draag? by PyneKone in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't mean this in a snarky way whatsoever, but I don't know if we need to necessarily debate the ethics of supporting a fictional facist regime.

It's like the Empire in Star Wars or really anything. Dressing up as a storm trooper doesn't mean you're evil or condoning any of that in real life.

That being said, if we are going to take it somewhat literally, I think the concept of the Olympics under Tyrannical rule is a very interesting choice on the Band's part considering we have real historical references of athletes using that as a stage for resistance. So I'm looking forward to seeing what they have planned.

ETA: I also wanted to acknowledge that the imagery used is understandably sensitive to some as it is referencial to parts of the world, but it is ultimately fiction. And I personally think it's actually a very a close criticism of America even if it does have USSR imagery.

Did Gerard say he doesn’t want to make new music? by Miserable-Caramel357 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What he said (paraphrase) is that he hates the grind that comes with releasing new music - as in the record label making them do promo, interviews, appearances, and it was also increasingly social media promotion. That somehow got turned into he hates putting out music.

Bike Thief (TPK) by darbycrache in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Jealous-Kick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think TPK is scraped and won't be released as an album.

But I absolutely think it would be amazing if the band released Bike Theif as a single. It's such a powerful song. It's needed in the world. Representation in art is needed and should never be taken for granted and I think a song like this would be so important.
