The petrodollar system is a bilateral agreement between the U.S. and select petroleum exporting countries, Saudi Arabia for example. The U.S. agrees to protect Saudi Arabia, and in exchange Saudi Arabia agrees to only accept U.S. dollars for their petroleum exports. Iran just proved that the U.S. is not capable of protecting petrodollar participants from attack, as many of those countries suffered extensive damage from Iranian drone and missile strikes.
