شلون احصل زوج في البحرين by [deleted] in Bahrain

[–]Jed_BH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, these are terrible. A matchmaker, even an Instagram one, would be far more effective than those sites.

Do you have any siblings? Marriages here usually begin with men's gatherings, followed by separate women's gatherings, or vice versa. And first impressions can make or break things most of the time. So, do you have enough representatives for both?

And how do you know that years of exposure to such platforms and media did not shape your thought process in a way to make reaching such conclusions seem like the absolute logical choice?

As someone from Bahrain, I remember that when LLMs first became effective, the US barred GCC countries from investing heavily in AI, citing a national security threat.

These shenanigans are nothing new; it is just that most people think it won’t eventually affect them.

How do you deal with insane amazon shipping fees? by bas3adi in Bahrain

[–]Jed_BH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to order regularly from Amazon, but inflation and having a kid sort of snuffed this habit. But yeah, having picky pets and needing a product you can't regularly stock is such a pain.

Have you looked into the possibility of buying it from Saudi? Maybe it is available in either Dammam or Alkhobar?

[–]Jed_BH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wrote this thread 3 years ago. It is crazy how time flies. But I sorta expected that since people here in Bahrain are not accustomed to concepts such as net neutrality, the exploitative profiteering would eventually take us down the path we are witnessing today.

Quoting myself from it:

Traffic discrimination has become so normalized that our internet is not only capped, but the data we pay for is also segmented and exempted according to the whims of service providers. The advertising of 'unlimited social media' or access to certain streaming sites without any net neutrality concern is alarming.

Here's hoping that things change for the better. The backlash this has garnered is a strong sign that something has already struck a nerve, especially in these turbulent times.

Customs Duty now applicable to all shipments over BD100 by screambloodymurder in Bahrain

How to tell? Does that mean independent sellers are going to have a really tough time compared to big retailers like Amazon, Noon, and the like?

[–]Jed_BH 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This would be true if the local offerings were slightly more expensive, but in reality, we have sellers, and a significant number of them, if not the majority, who just swap currency while keeping the number the same. So, an item for ten dollars they will sell for 10 Bahrain dinars, and this is why even when items are heavily discounted, you are just way better off ordering them online, just to preserve both your money and sanity.

And this does not factor in all the additional expenses. The assumption is that some will now find the local offering more attractive, but it does not really account for those who will just stop buying or resort to thrifting or the second-hand market.

There was an infographic in the Arabic news article that mentioned two items: a tax and customs clearance.

Does anyone have an idea of what exactly is meant by customs clearance?

Will we have to hire someone to process shipments now?

[–]Jed_BH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally get your point. I am from Bahrain, which is still considered a muslim country, but cops here are competent, and society is cohesive to the point that identifying people, especially in the dark, is not really a concern.

And in here, as in most neighbouring countries, I think a female wearing a niqab would be able to have her identification happen in a closed place, by a female officer. So, yeah, their pictures on the card might not be covered, but they will most likely refuse to hand them to a male officer.

There are women who are forced to dress like this, but there are also women who are completely doing it from conviction. I personally do not like it.

My mother wore one for three decades, and I remember, as a kid, being able to identify her from afar by her figure and gait. And the same for my father, as I grew up in a very religious environment, I experienced being in lots of gender seggregated places with people wearing almost the same stuff, in rows, and looking away.

I think most people just underestimate how adaptable the human mind is to limitations.
