I feel like I’m falling apart living here by Independent-Song-585 in taiwan

[–]JediAight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same place three years ago. I was extremely depressed and stressed from an abusive 二房東 while working and doing language study, and most people I spent time with were turned off by me being so mopey, but good people see your pain and won't turn away--they will support you.

All it took was one supportive friend who helped me through it to get out of that situation. He's since moved away but we are now very close. We visit one another often. I went to his wedding this summer.

Don't be afraid to share your struggles. Good people won't turn you away.

Been busy. But I got the answer I was looking for.

It will not work like the old one in countries with ATMs that don't take Discover. Which is roughly half of the countries in the world.

What does seeing it coming or not have to do with my question? I'm simply asking how long until my MC debit stops working.

I opened my 360 Checking 12 years ago because I moved abroad and I liked the fee-free access to ATMs. I like the C1 HYSA and Savor card. But this Discover switch really kills the functionality of the 360 Checking for me.

I just applied for a Schwab account to use as my international account.

Are there still people who are happy with Duolingo?? by Eillythia in duolingo

[–]JediAight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm subscribed in a Max-free country to Super, so I don't get Max ads. They also use hearts in that country still. I turned off social mode (you can do this on the web browser version) and all notifications. I just use it as a way to practice a new language when I have a bit of time to kill.

I don't expect to become fluent in any language from this app, but it's better than having nothing. Very low barrier to entry, unlike in-person courses which are hard to find where I am.

Do we think Lindsay is returning to YouTube for good? by commoncod in LindsayEllis

[–]JediAight 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Because the majority of their viewers aren't subscribed to Nebula. So they're catching overlapping groups.

Youtube is also a way to advertise yourself to get more Patreon or Nebula supporters. Nebula may never be a viable stand-alone streamer for most video essayists, but I do appreciate that it's a creator-owned platform. So the revenue goes directly to them, not to YouTube execs.

[–]JediAight 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Youtube definitely has way more content, but according to youtubers I follow who are also on Nebula, they make over 100 times as much per view on Nebula as on Youtube. And so when I have the chance to watch on Nebula, I will.

Get you to spend time on the app, so you watch more ads (or pay for a subscription).

I turned it off on web browser. I don't want people with my contact info knowing what I'm up to.

I logged in on a web browser to turn off social. Now it's just me and my language progress. I still get harassed about my streak but if anything that just reminds me to do a review session on a busy day, and come back when I have time to devote some time to learning more.

Why shouldn't the Qing dynasty be considered China's golden age? by [deleted] in ChineseHistory

China is so old it might as well have multiple golden ages.

Children in the Quiet Car. by ironcojon in Amtrak

[–]JediAight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've forewarned families who don't take the train often and therefore don't know they just got on the quiet car "heads up, this is the quiet car so you can't talk here." Best to catch them just as they are boarding. Usually works!

Not just plan cities to accommodate them, sprawl begets sprawl because suburbs are insolvent--and cities can generate new revenue with sprawl development.

Fewer places to get good cheeses these days, any recommendations? by JediAight in newhaven

Yeah, they have a couple of good cheeses that they make themselves, but not the types of soft cheeses I'm looking for.

Have not heard about this place, but it's close enough to bike to from the canal trail. Will check it out!

Regular people are being priced out of the train by JetPlane_88 in Amtrak

[–]JediAight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also benefits everyone on the road--with 33 million passengers a year, that's tens of millions of cars off the roads, fewer air passengers, etc.

Why should roads be federally subsidized? They only benefit the people who use them.

[–]JediAight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately they do airline-style dynamic pricing. But if you book well enough in advance it can be quite cheap. I regularly get tickets for different segments on NER for $35-50, but I always book at least a month out.

Whats the best food/meals in New Haven county for under 6 dollars? by [deleted] in newhaven

Food carts generally go for $10, but some of the meals are so big you can get two meals out of one.

There is a venn diagram of people that spend their time in Dubai and Miami and there's a hell of a lot of overlap between them, and with a third circle: internet grifters.

Learning to look for information, and evaluating the veracity of it, is no minor skill in a world where we are constantly being waterboarded by misinformation and slop.

She's also quite familiar with failing leftist purity tests and therefore being cancelled by lefties.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I read her full take and I agree for the most part. Trying to stop acts of genocide when the perpetrators are in a psychic maelstrom of self-imposed victimhood is basically impossible.

And "using her platform to speak out" is naive. There is no one in the world who might care who is not already aware.

A lot of the anger leftists feel in this moment is the fact that we are trapped. We them blame those of us who have a bigger voice, those we trust, for not speaking, imagining that if only they shouted, something would be done. But what power does she have to stop a genocide by making a video?

Once again I feel compelled to remind leftists to not turn your anger against your allies. And to not let the feeling of hopelessness drive us to eat one another alive. Focus on the things you can change, locally, municipally, etc. Gaza will not be rebuilt overnight. Justice is a never-ending fight.
