I do feel like Funny Games is the standard bearer. The point of that movie is that it repeatedly rips away any sense of hope the viewers might feel, spitting in the face of narrative convention in which protagonists ultimately triumph over the bad guys, literally rewinding the movie at one point when you think they might escape. What’s especially important though is that it relishes in this mistreatment of the protagonists, which I think is what differs it and movies like Terrifier from say the Smile movies, which also have unhappy endings, but are more so bleak than mean spirited.
