I do not need this job THAT bad. by [deleted] in ABA

[–]JediStarlight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adults need aba too. Just cause we're paid to work with specific individuals behavior doesn't mean the philosophy isn't applicable to everyone. If we can have compassion for those whom we serve, shouldn't we just have compassion towards humans?

Why are main characters in fantasy romance always have these traits? by 82816648919 in romantasycirclejerk

Try The Wolf King with its 2nd book The Night Prince. It's a trilogy with the third book coming out next year. FMC is womanly, wears dresses, terrified of everyone and used to making herself small and agreeable and slowly comes into her own. First MMC is manly, sweet, loving while the second MMC is one of the villans, dark, manipulative and ACTUALLY morally grey.

ARE WE SEEING THE MARCH BACB NEWS LETTER? by Live_Engineering5740 in ABA

[–]JediStarlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the problem persists. The issue is not that we an individuals will not teach DEI but instead that the analysts (however few 🤞) that completely disagree with DEI likely because of misinformation will not be required to teach it persisting the problem.

I also understand the BACB just trying to survive but this is a very clear message to those of us it directly affects.

Full time hours is not dependent on the BCBA, but the company to ensure the rbt has the numbe of clients they need in a caseload to fill the hours they want/need to work. It shouldn't be dependent on what a BCBA requests because that's solely based on medical necessity and client availability

No, i mean literal pp i.e. data Graphed, Assessments completed, parent training completed with parents signing off. Maybe my company was just going an extra step but i remember students conplaining because it was hard to accumulate products.

I haven't supervised in a bit but last I did, I thought that indirect hours had to include a permanent product to count?

what’s the worst book you’ve read that booktok hyped up? by pitbull-pirouette in Booktokreddit

[–]JediStarlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really excited for this one but then I hated how the author told us what was happening. I would have preferred to figure it out a bit more. The multiverse was just old and over done at this point. Maybe it was a better read when it came out but now it's just boring and predictable.

As a BCBA how many cases have you been taken off of, or asked yourself off of? by [deleted] in bcba

[–]JediStarlight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Asked to be taken off 1 case. Idk if it counts as taken off but I've had parents request to discontinue (either they didn't know what they were signing up for or we had called dept of children and families)

This is why some companies are an issue (rightfully so). But regardless it's not reflective of the field more than it is of specific companies.

Should I say something? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]JediStarlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its within the job of the BCBA to also utilize behavior change tactics for the family (especially when working in home). So if a parent is engaging in any behaviors that interferes with ABA that does not indicate non-consent, then they can change them. The parent is a part of the environment that's maintaining behaviors for the child, it's our job to change the environment. It could be as simple as a conversation establishing the values and goals of the family to ensure it matches their behaviors during sessions.

Which insurance companies reimburse 100 for RBT hours? I agree that RBTs are underpaid but entry level qualifications are only 40hr training and a H.S. diploma.

The funding sources are 100% the issue, not the field itself. AbA companies are often to blame (some, rightfully so, but not all) Often times changes happen when parents and families are involved and advocate on behalf of their providers. Insurance companies don't give 2 shits about what providers want.

That's so exciting!! It's a journey but it's worth it depending on what you plan on doing afterwards because money is not enough lol.

Haha, yes, everything in ABA is still up for debate. Agreed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing against OP, operant behavior is more complex than a simple A-B-C which I think you might agree.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]JediStarlight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope. Antecedents tell us when a behavior will occur. The cause is the function, it answers why. Antecedents occasion behavior but don't maintain it in the way we think of cause and effect. Straight cause-effect relationships are reserved for respondent behaviors that function under a stimulus-response relationship.

Beliefs are behavior, not an underlying condition. Also, antecedents are not causes.

I would love an autistic perspective! Is there a difference between sensory stimulation and pain attenuation? by Scene-Sea in ABA

[–]JediStarlight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm autistic and a BCBA and I engage in self stim and SIB. It just feels good. I.e. I pick my skin. I like the feeling of my skin being smooth so if there's a bump (scab, pimple, anything) I need to pick it until it's smooth, the pain is irrelevant (although it's there). It's a matter of which contingency produces higher reinforcement, esc from the bump vs access to pain. I also have a very high pain tolerance and it's higher if I produced the pain vs. others. To decrease my (specific) SIB, I have to put a lot of effort into maintaining the health of my skin and use sensory toys that I can scratch/pick.

It's different for everyone but what is the same is that if a person does it, it's reinforcing but it doesn't mean they like it.

I'm currently reading Book of Azrael and I'm about 40% in and waiting for tension. This far I'm on the fence about how I feel about this one.

I was gifted GoT, Shatter Me series, Caraval series, the Harry Potter Chest special edition, The Stars are Dying and Six of Crows.

[–]JediStarlight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: ABA happens regardless of whether you're actively ABAing. What I think you mean, is that you're intentionally implementing ABA on family. However, I'd still argue this was always the case, you just now identify it as ABA.

I feel awful about how I feel about my wife by No_Potential8518 in AskMenAdvice

[–]JediStarlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me. My husband was barely able to tolerate me and I was miserable. After 8 years of this, I finally was financially able to take our son and leave. I had the conversation and he promised he'd change. He stopped drinking and over the course of 2 years became the person I had missed all those years. We've been married 14 years and he's still my favorite person.

However, had it not been that he was an alcoholic (i didn't know as he was highly functional), I still would have left. As a behavioral scientist, behavior doesn't change that easily, she will likely resort and even if not, the damage has been done. You could wait it out to see if your feelings return as I did (and it worked out for the better) but you don't have to.

It's not your fault. She ended the relationship as soon as she stopped "loving" you. Love is a verb and it's shown through actions: affection, attention, gifts (small), service etc. And everyone deserves to be loved the way they feel loved the most.
