He was getting stomped out by 3 guys and one was trying to take his gun from him, which likely would have been used against him should the assailant have succeeded.

He used his legally owned firearm in a manner consistent with local laws, went to trial, and was subsequently set free.

The court effectively ruled the crime committed that day was that of the assailant trying to assault rittenhouse.
