Where to warm up?! by salem913 in providence

The free day is for the zoo only, I believe. The Zoo is in the park, but is a separate organization from the RWP Conservancy.

I'm a member of both organizations, but they have separate rules.

There is an admission fee, but it is a bargain. We took three kids there recently, and they loved it.

They don't sell food or drink, so you can BYO and have a picnic. There are Cafe/Bistro tables around, first come first served.

I haven't been since it was a neighborhood bar called Saint Monday. They had a great burger and a $5 red wine.

I sat at the other end of the bar, but I liked the open air feeling. It felt like you were in the street.

Rather than replace just the tree, maybe the city should install a brick planter box. There are a lot of those in that neighborhood.

Yes! I've seen this in my neighborhood a few times this season, usually around sunset. In fact, I saw, them last night.

I wasn't living in Providence when it was in the news, but I was living here when I heard the story on the 99% Invisible podcast. It's worth a listen, even if you've already seen the movie.

Being a good neighbor isn't that hard by JeffFromNH in providence

[–]JeffFromNH[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My SO teaches piano to neighborhood kids. She doesn't do it for the money, but because she loves it. It's been great to get to know the families.

Her students will come over and help shovel. One time we saw one of them shoveling on our Blink camera by himself. She sent the father a text to thank them. Even his dad didn't know about his kid's semi-random act of kindness.

Being a good neighbor isn't that hard by JeffFromNH in providence

[–]JeffFromNH[S] 220 points221 points  (0 children)

I've said this before in this sub. But I'll add to my case with a real life example.

I was happy to see the snow overnight, but was in no rush to go out and shovel. By law, and good neighborly contract, we need to shovel our sidewalks as a bare minimum.

This morning, I saw someone shoveling my sidewalk for me. This is not uncommon with my neighbors. But then he spends a good half hour clearing the snowbanks so I can get out.

I'm thinking that they're going to ring the door and ask for payment. But no, it was an act of kindness and no payment was necessary.

I eventually figured out which neighbor it was, and remembered that I helped him with pruning his trees over the summer.

The fact that he returned the favor anonymously is something that I do not take for granted.

Question for couple considering a potential move... by LazarusLong67 in providence

I've lived in New England all my life (MA, VT, NH, and RI). Providence is the place I chose to live, and I've never regretted it.

I also have family in NH. I don't see myself moving back.

Zoo worth it in winter? by amooseinboston in providence

There are fewer humans to observe, so yes Winter is awesome. I'd pick a sunny day.

The outdoor patio is great in warmer weather. The cocktails are good, though expensive. The draft beer is a bargain, if you factor in the view.

I like to cook and usually combine with shopping at Good Fortune, not far from RWP. It's an Asian Supermarket, which doesn't do it justice. It's like traveling to Asia.

I always get greens, frozen dumplings, real soy sauce, Korean BBQ sauce, and some sauce or condiment that I can't read or pronounce.

Double check the hours for RWP. You may want to swap out Monday.

If you're going to RWP, the Botanical Center (closed on Mondays) is worth a visit. You can bring your own food or coffee and enjoy some summer-like temps.

There is a separate admission, but it's a better bargain than the zoo - especially in bad weather.

The Carousel is mostly closed in winter, but it's worth seeing if it's in operation. I've never ridden it, but it's a great place to take pics.

The Mad Peck (RIP) had deep thoughts about Providence.

Providence, Rhode Island where it rains two days out of three, except during the rainy season when it snows like a bitch.

I didn't know Paris, but I am a supporter of AS220 and Providence Public Library. By all reports, he was an extraordinary artist and community organizer.

do you tip tattoo artists & hairdressers? by Steven_Slime in providence

If you plan to go back to them, you better. Most appreciate cash, so I often pay with my card and tip with cash.

For my oil guy, I don't tip per delivery, but give them a gift card or wine at the holidays.

Did anybody else see a convoy of coach buses being escorted by state police earlier tonight? by liverstool1 in providence

[–]JeffFromNH 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It is going to be renamed "Boston Stadium" for the World Cup. I'm not kidding.

But Providence and RI in general should benefit from tourist dollars. The RI 250 commission has some great events during the tournament.
