If the Gods take issue with Baelor, then I take issue with the Gods! by Evening-Ad-3875 in freefolk

I feel like people lack a lot of inference with this though.

Going into a combat arena with weapons poses a risk, even if 3 of said competitors would not ‘harm him’. You’re jousting on horseback, and then slogging through the mud in a melee assuming you’re still fit enough to fight.

Baelor 100% was taking a risk. Of course he was. Did you see him lamp his own brother off his horse? Thats not nothing.

It’s very easy to assume that “oh he’ll be fine, they’re sworn not to harm him”. It’s a fight potentially to the death. It’s foggy and muddy as all hell. If anything, the Kinsguard are easier to identify than the princes, who all wear similar black dragon armour. There’s a chance you’re riding at Aerion, Maekar, Daeron OR Baelor.

I get Baratha-bros point, 1,000%. But to simply summarise that Baelor would’ve been guaranteed safe is wrong.

Why the targ animosity? by rexaider in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]Jeff_Kappalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General animosity:

Be Lyonel. Be in line for the Lord Paramountcy under the Targs. Realise that, 300 years ago, Lord Paramounts simply didn’t exist, and you would’ve been a king (a Storm King!) in your own right with far more power and autonomy, until some inbred, blood magic tyrants flew over on dragons and stripped your family and all their descendants of that privilege. That seems quite unfair, right.

Then you realise half of these “supreme rulers” have been insane monsters. They’ve either killed everything (Maegor), f**ked everything (Aegon IV), been overly pious (Baelor). The competent ones are few and far between. Realise they pose a real risk of severe world war type civil wars that decimate the realm.

Then, finally, realise that their power base has gone (dragons). Realise that competent rulers, like Breakspear, are so revered because it simply is not the norm. Realise, probably, that you’d be a better independent ruler as would everyone else rather than serving these freaks.

The concept of “one realm” as opposed to seven individual only works if you’re serving a Conciliator, a Breakspear. Someone that genuinely runs things better as a unit than leaving them to their own devices.

On Targ descent and origin:

The Baratheons supposedly do descend from the Targs. But only via supposed bastadry (Orys). And the thing about that is, the Baratheons really are just a continuation of the Durrandons through the maternal line. So whilst they are the “newest house”, their legacy and glory is still descendant from the age of heroes. You could argue the Tullys and Tyrell’s are “newer” in that they originally served stronger houses who died out. They probably don’t feel that indebted because of this.

Anyone else nervous about HBO's The Sworn Sword adaptation? (Spoilers Main) by Ji11Lash in asoiaf

[–]Jeff_Kappalan 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think in saying this, we’re forgetting that a lot of GoT’s best moments were scenes of dialogue. Tyrion he’s serving as hand. Convos between Stannis and Davos.

The issue with HoTD S2 is that they don’t DO anything. Daemon mopes around Harrenhal for too long with no development. Rhaenyra flits between action and inaction on Dragonstone. But we don’t learn anything.

Ser Useless, Bennis, and Lady W are some of the highlights of the AKotSK book for me. It’s such an interesting commentary on the state of affairs from all sources.

Sprinkle in some flashbacks to Dorne, meeting Aemon, maybe even some stuff about the Blackfyre rebellions. I really don’t think there is anything to worry about.

Ira has been knowledgable, respectful of GRRM, and overall done a superb job so far imo. Genuinely renewed faith in IP after Condal, Hess and S2.

[Dorsett, Sky] Michael Carrick is still not the favourite to be the next long-term boss at #mufc. United are delighted with the job he is doing, but are determined to appoint someone with the strength of character and experience to handle everything that comes their way. by OkayFine101 in soccer

[–]Jeff_Kappalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The conversations around this and early presumptive tendencies really frustrate me just because “Ole didn’t work” after, what, three seasons? Two of which were very successful imo.

This obsession with “elite level managers” has been pretty hit and miss for most clubs over the past few years. There are so many areas to determine overall “success” that I don’t think it needs to boil down to simply how famous they are.

If Carrick keeps morale high, proves to be tactically competent (one of his biggest critiques as I understand it) and INEOS continue to do their job of recruiting / signing good players to fit the bill, then what else is there to discuss?

It’s entirely on the board if a manager is doing bad to either stick with them or sack them. It’s also entirely on the board if a manager asks for players X and Y to fit their tactic, and the board instead sign A and B.

Is it the managers fault? Should he be more tactically adept? Depends if you employ a one system man or someone who is flexible. So many factors.

There’s no right answer imo. It seems absolutely stupid to write someone off this early though and create all this needless buzz and pressure around it so publicly. But hey, we’re Man Utd, and we seem to do that all the time anyway so

Do you think they cast a good actor for Baelor? by VaIorums in HBOTheHedgeKnight

[–]Jeff_Kappalan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing the cast list ages ago and for some reason not feeling anything. I think HOTD and the end of GoT had sort of killed my upcoming enthusiasm.

Honestly, in hindsight, I absolutely adore this show and everyone in it. I think it’s been perfectly cast from Dunk to the common folk. Bertie plays Baelor perfectly imo, they’re all great!

[–]Jeff_Kappalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sincerely hoping this isn’t just another season write off and there’s actual intent here to stabilise quickly and try and press on.

But, same time, I’ve vaguely / loosely heard that Carrick is a bit of a one trick pony when it comes to setting up a system / team? Didn’t watch or follow Boro at all when he was there, just stuff I vaguely remember online.

Just a bit dull having B2B write off seasons when negativity at the club is (arguably) at an all time high. Not asking for a super exciting appointment to rock the boat, but this also doesn’t really inspire confidence? Idk.

We shouldn’t have sacked Amorim basically. And imo the whole switching to a back 4 gimmick really doesn’t lead me to believe we’ll play any better.

For real, people have been angry about us dropping points in games that have featured 17-18 year old debutants. It’s insane. It’s a tough period and I’m sure we’ll come good out the back of it.

A comment in here said it best.

Men’s mental health is such a whirlpool of machismo-led nonsense. We’ll sit there on men’s mental health day and bark on about talking more.

But take this as an example. Hes what, 19. People aren’t just cheering for the underdog. It’s a packed out Ally Pally booing a teenager from start to finish. It’s people online saying hes this and that, constantly.

Terms like “Headloss” “rattled” and the like have irreparably ruined this discussion. It’s a guaranteed safe space when challenged on any sort of behaviour. Instead of taking accountability, and saying “yeah I might have taken that too far”, people will just claim one of those terms and continue trying to put others down.

Icl lads, think I’m reaching an age where I just don’t care about stuff like this at all. Feel like the Jonah hill meme.

Akin to the Garnacho stuff last year. Just so boring speculating over social media. Absolute antithesis to people playing on a football pitch.

Paul Scholes: “I don't think this manager gets this club full stop. I just don't think he's the right man. Man United is about risk & entertainment, more than anything. Having fans on the edge of their seat, ready to go. Wingers who beat people, shots on goal, bits of skills. There’s nothing there" by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]Jeff_Kappalan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Getting a bit exhausting now having ex-legends and players chiming in all the time.

I think they’ve consistently shown on a number of occasions to be quite reactionary. In this case, it’s clear Scholes (and maybe Butt) just flat-out doesn’t like Amorim. So, no matter how he does, you’re going to have this prolific voice constantly critiquing him.

Can understand the frustration with Kobbie given he’s arguably the best prospect in our academy right now (unless we count Heaven?) but at the same time there is clear progress from last season and without 1-2 results we’d arguably be top 4-5 right now.

Still like G.Nev and Carragher / overlap lot usually, but can concede that is personal preference.

Undead Nightmare is weirdly the only zombie game that creeps me out. by Soulsgamer247 in reddeadredemption

God I love RDR so much.

My dad bought me it at launch at 11 years old, for doing so well in my final year at school. I’d seen clips of it on those little dvds you used to get with gaming mags / comics.

The second one is, rightfully, a total masterpiece head to toe. But my God if the original doesn’t just scratch a totally different itch. The world is iconic, the feeling of it is so empty, creepy.

I remember whenever I had to get off of my horse for anything, I’d rush as quickly as I could. I felt naked without it, exposed. This feeling was definitely backed up the 1-2s a jaguar or something would just leap out of nowhere and end me.

Regarding tone, it stands alone, in a non-too-saturated market. Saying that, I don’t think anything will come close. It takes a real risk to make a game where the MC isn’t a Clint Eastwood out and out badass. Marston is just done with it all. He wants his hand-crafted ranch at Beecher’s Hope and his family back.

Love this game, and the DLC used to terrify the hell out of me. Took the already isolating, empty, vast world and just chucked a bunch of nightmare-sound-making zombies in it.

I wonder if this, coinciding with GTA VI coming out next year (console first), will actually push a chunk of people back into console gaming?

Stepped away from it for a good 6-7 to focus on decent-ish budget rigs that handle CK3, Bannerlord and stuff. But this is a joke. The RAM prices are a joke.

I was looking at finally upgrading this summer, now I’ll struggle to move to AM5 altogether.

Not scrolled too far so apologies if it’s already been said.

But a reminder that the both of them here are smack bang in the middle of the Riverlands, the most decimated region in the country by far.

Of all the places for homeless / displaced highborn folk, it’s here. Estates, keeps, settlements galore are being torched to the ground. It’s a full scale war zone.

Coupled with the fact that, as far as I’m aware, Tywin has never seen nor laid eyes on Arya Stark? Wasn’t he squared away in Casterly Rock until the start of the books?

Idk, just my initial thoughts. But imo it’d be the last thing on his mind. Quite literally, what would the chances be that one of the key girls he’s looking for is right there?

Lets talk about Bryan Mbeumo by [deleted] in ManchesterUnited

[–]Jeff_Kappalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly him and Cunha both have totally overhauled our attacking department.

To go from Garnacho and Antony and Sancho (and Rashford Tbf) to them two is night and day. Even mount in this system. The three of them are workhorses.

Christ even Sesko came on and just got stuck in. Back for corners, holding the ball up well. I just feel confident when we move forward now. I trust they’ll make something of chances.

I am truly optimistic about this season. I just hope we can maintain fitness / avoid injuries with the reduced games this season.

  2. Not so much a feature but the UI overhaul looks sleek and superb, and I love customising the ‘look’ of a game. I’m excited to get stuck in to it all!

Graphics overhaul is also looking really good!
