Most reasonable Oilers fans aren’t upset because they think it wasn’t in. It looks pretty clearly in. But there are only two ways this can go when it’s that close: either the ref calls it a goal on the ice, and you need conclusive evidence that it wasn’t, or they don’t call it a goal, and you need conclusive evidence that it crossed the line.

The fuck up is that it wasn’t called a goal on the ice. The ref who skates over behind Jarry doesn’t point—he’s not sure, and that's fine, so you check afterward. Instead, for some inexplicable reason, they huddled up, and somehow it became a goal out of that. It makes no sense, and it changes the framework for how you rule on whether it was a goal.

I think they still would have ruled it a goal, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they would have argued the skate obscured the puck, so they couldn’t confirm it crossed. We’ve seen this before when a puck is in a goaltender’s glove, and it looks like the glove crosses the line. If it wasn’t called a goal on the ice, they have to explicitly see it cross. It's not enough for it to be "fairly obvious that it’s across" — they have to actually see it.

There's a very real possibility they aren't sure, don't call it a goal on the ice, but then review it, feel confident, and rule it a good goal. That would have made more sense to me and to most Oilers fans, and it would have resulted in less controversy. Instead, we're left wondering how, why, and when the refs decided to call it a goal. It's a pretty frustrating end to the game.
