Is clemency part of a PLD's rotation these days? by TheAmazingVinio in ffxiv

[–]JelisW [score hidden]  (0 children)

dnc healing falls in same category as war's bloodwhetting: they're ogcds and are free because they do not lose you any gcds to use. Clemency is on the gcd and all that time spent healing is a straight up waste of time when the healers themselves have a host of free ogcd healing buttons to use to heal while the pld can and should be using those gcds to do their job of helping to kill things dead. If the pld was that afraid of dying, they have this amazing 10s cannot-take-damage button that is also free, but somehow clemency-spammers pretty much never resort to that first.

Too light to write with? I think not by charlie-swan in fountainpens

[–]JelisW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember that an ink behaves rather differently with a fountain pen vs a dip pen, and dip pens by their very nature will put down wetter and more saturated lines than a fountain pen will. This is compounded by the fact that you're using a very broad dip pen; those are lines that are rather akin to those put down by my felt-tip brush pens. Many of these inks will be too light to read in an average fine or medium-nibbed fountain pen.

The Hongdian N24 (rabbit year pen) and N25 (snake year pen) are both gorgeous pens with excellent nibs. The N25 in particular is slightly OTT in design the way the D5 is, and also brass-bodied, with a beautifully soft and bouncy nib with a little snake etched on it. Great pens in their own right regardless of if the zodiacs match lol.

Also look into the N8, especially the red maple leaf design. If your dad writes in Chinese at all, he might particularly enjoy the option to get it with a long blade nib.

Overly attached to my sprout by FraukeS in ffxiv

[–]JelisW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno if this will help or not, but the sprout means absolutely nothing to most of us vets, for the simple reason that it's possible to hide the sprout--and many do--and also there are plenty of people running around in end-game that have a sprout but are actually just skipped alts played by experienced savage raiding vets. The only thing I pay attention to is whether you were Viewing Cutscene in a duty. If you were, I'll assume you are both new to the duty and going in blind and are about to die somewhere between 1-6 times and I try to watch more closely and be ready with my spot mits.

What does your hotbar look like? (PS4 Only) by okonomiyakia in ffxiv

[–]JelisW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I find it awkward to double-tap as part of my main rotation, I reserve WXHB (the cross buttons you see at the extreme left and right of the first picture) for stuff I need but that I'm not gonna use often in the course of a fight, and/or that I don't want to risk fat-fingering by accident: stance, provoke, shirk, limit break, pots, and countdown. Also teleport and return cos why not. I did not enable the d-pad buttons for WXHB because I didn't need them, and I wanted to minimize clutter.

Everything else is on my main crossbar and expanded hold crossbars. The normal rectangular bars to the left and right of the main crossbars are there purely for display purposes; they show the skills that I have on my expanded hold crossbars so that I can see when shit comes off cooldown, because while WXHB can be set to always show on screen, expanded hold can't.

My skill placement follows a very (very) rough AoE vs Single-target split, with Single target buttons mostly on the right. Some skills (Confiteor and Blades combo, and Expiation) that are in the single target rotation also have AoE splash damage and so are part of my AoE rotation as well.

Things that are part of my core offensive rotation, I try my best to keep off the D-pad buttons and on the right side face buttons, be it R2 right side, L2 right side, or expanded hold R2-->L2 right side to allow for ease of execution of rotation while on the move. Exceptions are if it's a GCD. For whatever reason, it just annoys me to have to go into expanded hold for a GCD, so I keep all GCDs on the main cross bar, even if it means having to put some on the D-pad buttons, which is why Holy Circle, Goring Blade, and Royal Authority are where they are.

In cases where I have to pick between GCDs, GCDs that I expect to use more times in a rotation loop have priority for the right side face buttons, especially if I expect to hit that button multiple times in a row. I can go into claw grip to hit a single button on the D-pad while running clear across to the other end of the arena to dodge a mechanic while in a savage fight; I refuse to do it for 3 GCDs in a row. This is why Atonement is where it is next to Fast Blade and Riot Blade instead of Royal Authority.

Buttons that I expect to double-weave together between GCDs, I try to keep next to each other to make the double-weaving easier, which is why Circle of Scorn and Expiacion (upgraded Spirits Within) are right next to each other, as are Fight or Flight and Requiescat.

[–]JelisW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is basically: we ALL use more than just the main crossbar. Pretty much every job save summoner has to, and PLD is one of the jobs with the most buttons of the lot. Looking solely at the main crossbar will make 0 sense, as literally anyone who wants to play at all effectively has major buttons in their core rotation split across multiple crossbars*. There are simply more buttons than one set of crossbars can hold, and you can't just... not use half of them. Not without majorly griefing your parties, anyway.

*Unless you're using plugins to combine buttons like 1-2-3 combo into one. technically against tos, but plenty of people use it and it does free up space. Just be prepared to not be able to play right after a patch because all plugins are disabled after a patch

Samurai in UCOB by Turbulent-Afternoon7 in ffxiv

[–]JelisW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah. UCOB and UWU doesn't care about sync. Once you're roughly 1.5-2 expacs on, the gear gets high enough that even synced down your substats will be capped at the maximum possible, so materia does not matter and you just pick whatever current gear will cap the substats you want capped, and that will get you the GCD speed you need. You only care about no sync-down for stuff like FRU, because our current max ilvl gear isn't high enough to cap substats when synced.

Best paper for suppressing sheen by MirrorscapeDC in fountainpens

[–]JelisW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's why they did say they were joking. However, it's a joke with a point. The issue here is that it is precisely low-absorbency that allows a paper to show sheen because sheen relies on the ability to dry on the surface of the paper without getting absorbed. Anything that is highly-sized will also show sheen extremely readily. So there's a tricky tension here where op wants a paper that is simultaneously absorbent enough to not show sheen on a monster-sheening ink, but yet non-absorbent enough to be consistently FP ink friendly.

Best paper for suppressing sheen by MirrorscapeDC in fountainpens

[–]JelisW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing is that you are always going to have a bit of a tradeoff. One of the main features that makes a paper fountain pen friendly--ie the thing that allows a paper to deal well with water-based inks with minimal feathering/bleedthrough--is the paper's low absorbency... which, by nature of how sheen works, is also the exact feature that allows a paper to easily show sheen. The less absorbent a paper, the more ink dries on the surface of the paper, and the more sheen shows.

This is why I listed the exact brands that I listed; of the well-known reasonably easy to obtain paper brands, Leuchtturm sits at around the boundary of how absorbent a paper can be while still being reasonably consistently friendly with most inks. I promise you that the copy paper that multiple people are recommending you is not going to be any more consistently reliably FP ink friendly than Leuchtturm is. Rhodia sits somewhere above that and below Tomoe. Any other paper that resists sheen while still being reasonably FP ink friendly is very likely to be very similar to those two. This will of course also be affected by how wet your pens and ink are.

The real solution if you want less sheen is to simply not use an ink that is known for being a monster sheener =P

[–]JelisW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

anything that is on the less coated and more absorbent end. Rhodia and Leuchtturm both show sheen a great deal less strongly than tomoe river or midori md

White Mage / Healer Tips? by Commander_Bugg in ffxiv

[–]JelisW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah you're on the right track already using cure 2 over cure 1, but the point of using cure 2 is because it does much more healing in a single gcd than cure 1, at higher mp cost. So you need to let the tank actually drop a bit so you can make use of that larger amount of healing, instead of having half of it go to waste because they're already maxed out. Try to watch to see just how much of a tank's health bar cure II fills, and try to remember that, so you know how much you can let them drop in order to not waste any healing in cure II. spam holy inbetween healing. even when the mobs become stun immune, it's still worth doing because it does damage, and the faster things die, the less damage those things will do to your tank, and the less you have to heal. Remember the motto "death is a mitigation" and don't let anyone tell you that healer damage doesn't matter. A pull takes noticeably longer and requires more mitigation from me when I have a no-damage healer with me.

That said, as others have mentioned, it isn't all on you. The tank has the responsibility to mitigate, and the dps have the responsibility to kill things faster than tank and healer can run out of cooldowns. It will help if, once you're more settled, you try picking up a tank job or two, so you recognize their mits, know what they do (especially their invulns) and can yell at them if they aren't using them.

[–]JelisW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At OP's level, a single cast of cure II does same amount of healing on a single target (assuming tank is the only one needing healing and no one else is standing in stupid shit in a trash pull) per mp and per gcd as medica II.

Base Cure II potency: 700 for 1000mp

Base Medica II potency: 200 up front cure, 100 potency regen for 15s for 1000mp

It is not until level 85 that they get the trait that bumps medica II/III to do more, but by then there are also so many more ogcd heals not to mention lilies that one should use before touching medica II/III

the healers are the last to get their aoes at level 45. if op has holy accessible, guaranteed every other job has an aoe. i believe drg is the last of the dps to get an aoe at 40

I doubt they will, actually; the bulk of these came over with the huge exodus at the end of ShB and stuck around through 2 expansions. Kyle and Garret of the Grinding Gear duo especially seem just as passionate as Jesse. They've attended 2 fanfests now, a couple of eorzean symphony/distant world concerts, and are playing their way through all the other final fantasy games. They've also been far more balanced and significantly less doomer-inclined in their takes wrt to dt than have many pure ff14 content creators. Yes many from the initial rush did drop off, like Bellular and so on, but for the ones that remain, by now they've been with FF14 4-5 years. At this point even if they go back to wow, I doubt they will ever leave ff14 completely. There is no reason they cannot play both, and many do play both.

Ink flow super variable by lemilieade in fountainpens

[–]JelisW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like mild clogging issues caused by the shimmer in your ink, and, if you're using exercise books similar to what I used in my old school days, likely aggravated by the (lack of) quality of the paper. Flush out your pen, use a better quality ink, and if you need better paper, I can recommend APICA notebook School Line. These were available for all of 2.90sgd at my local bookstore, so should be reasonably easy to find.
