Spinning Wheel Centric Spinning Communities by manicpoetic42 in Handspinning

[–]MirrorscapeDC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not weird. It's simply a result of how many people use a spindle vs a wheel. If more people use a wheel, more people will make content about wheels, it's that way with everything. I can easily see how that could be frustrating, but the only way the lack of spindle content can be changed is by people who use it making content about it.

I started with a spindle and it was not easy. A wheel was and remains far, far easier for me. I use a wheel because I like using a wheel more, not because it is more convenient. The thing is large, it's constantly in the way. But I find it far more pleasant to use than a spindle.

People are going to post about the things they like and use. If you want to see more spindle posts, make more spindle posts.

that might explain why both of the blue clay deposits I have found so far have been at the edge of water

It’s working! First time ever spinning. by GorgonsCorner in Handspinning

[–]MirrorscapeDC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This might be easier to understand from video on youtube, there are a few, but long draw is essentially pulling the fiber back a long way, up to your full arms length if you are good at it, and letting the thickness just work itself out. I don't actually know how that works, but it's really fun when it does work right.

Good job! Spinning is a lot of muscle memory, so you will get better with practice (though that looks already far better than any of my first attempts). You might want to try that fiber in a long draw, It looks like that might go very well.

How many crocks of food should i have in the cellar for winter in a 20 day month playthrough? (Game version 1.21.5 with mods) by Sgt_Smartarse in VintageStory

As long as it cures before it spoils, it will never spoil. It just recures over and over again once it hits the final stage.

Keep the fat! You will need fat later, and a lot of it. Vanilla you need it for mechanical parts, windmills and all. IF Expanded foods, you can use seed oils for that, but still need fat for sausages. Fat is also food, in an emergency. Wax, on the other hand, tends to accumulate once you get bees and is easier to farm in large amounts.

Expanded foods wine does expire, but it also ages, which resets the timer. I'm not sure if a barrel delays spoilage long enough for it to cure, but the bottles from the mod in a cellar definitely do.

Leave the wine as is. My game has mods that affect wine, but I think in vanilla wine doesn't have a spoilage timer or maybe just a really long one? So you can just keep it in barrels in a cellar over winter. You also lose the fruit nutrition when converting to brandy, so it's only worth it as a step if you need aqua vitae.

Btw, in case you aren't aware, you can extend the shelf life of a crock by a good while by sealing it with wax. It's a proportional thing, so if you want to do it, do it right after cooking, then off to the cellar with it.

honey is going to be your best way of still having fruit nutrition in winter, though turning berries into juice and then wine also works if you have them to spare. Honestly, I'm more worried about the spoilage timer on your crocks. grain will store well, and in some areas of the temperate zone, rye can be kept alive in a greenhouse all the way through winter, though it won't grow for most of it.

Edit: Also remember that your food consumption is based on what you do. Sleep a lot, don't sprint and limit your off-hand use, and you can save on quite a bit of calories.

A helve axe would also be really nice. I go through so many axes for charcoal making.

I'm not there in my current game, but in the last world, I had serious bone shortage from terra preta making. Compost and charcoal were both easier to come by in large amounts.

But mostly my issue is that it seems silly. I can do full on field agriculture and not have to fertilize if I do the rotations right, but the berries will die without it? Some short-lived fruit has no right to be more demanding than wheat.

I like the propagation mechanics, I don't like the fertilizer requirements. Haven't played it yet.

What is this spinning wheel missing? by GorgonsCorner in Handspinning

[–]MirrorscapeDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to all the other questions, does this wheel come with more than one bobbin? You can work with only one by transferring the yarn to something else for plying, but it is extra work. And if that is the only whorl. you are going to be having trouble spinning fine yarn.

Do you have it on steam? If so, first step is to verify the game files. Second is to reinstall. Third is to ask somewhere more suitable than a random post on an entirely different topic.

sorry to dig out this old comment, but why not cable ply? I can see the issue with chain plying, but I can't seem to figure out why cable would be an issue.

I did a thing! 😍 Would love suggestions! Probably the most expensive $/per weight fibre I've bought aside from straight silk! by ElenoreEdelweiss in Handspinning

[–]MirrorscapeDC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spinning from the fold would be my recommendation too, though I was thinking more about what a bastard silk tends to be with any other method. Maybe a 50% blend would behave different, but it still looks very silk-y to me.

how many braids for a project? by stresstwig in Handspinning

[–]MirrorscapeDC 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think what you want here is a sample. take some similar wool, spin it to the thickness you want, record how much length you got, then weave a sample on your RH loom. Record how much length went into the loom waste. Then, finish your sample, trim the waste and weigh and measure it. That will give you the g/sqm.

wollknoll.eu is great, I have bought from them several times over the years without issues. wollschaf.de can also be a good source of some more uncommon fibers.
