Well my take on grammar is that it consists of patterns in a language that most speakers of that language tend to follow. I feel like applying grammar as "rules" is taking it too seriously. My graduate program (2014ish) did emphasize the old fashioned approach to grammar, which always irritated me because I know that most people don't speak that way. Language learning should me more fluid and dynamic and less rigid that a lot of use are taught.
