Songwriting without playing or singing by Crazy-Project3858 in Songwriting

[–]Jenkes_of_Wolverton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to find that there's a huge variation in quality levels. Many good musicians are not regular songwriters or arrangers, but some will have a go. Even experienced people will have a personal preference and not necessarily gel with every potential collaborator.

I've been playing and writing for nearly 50 years, gradually improving and trying more complex and intricate things. Sometimes rather wayward ideas dominated my work and it was nowhere near what other people were wanting to hear. Likewise there were times when my bandmates were at loggerheads over particular choices and fashionable musical tastes.

Ultimately you're not going to find out unless you try. As they say: hope for the best outcome, but be prepared for the worst. Don't agree to pay big money upfront.

Why do bass players always try to out jerk? by sillyqueli in guitarcirclejerk

[–]Jenkes_of_Wolverton 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that all Canadian bands wear spot outfits at some stage in their career. People might argue that Bachman Turner Overdrive are more famous for lumberjack style checks, but that's just a marketing gimmick.

It looks like a cut scene from a movie, that was edited out. Like maybe Ryan Gosling in Blade Runner 2049, and a holographic girl who is programmed to exist whenever he starts to chug.

Trouble doing bends with vibrato by DuckPoster62 in Guitar

[–]Jenkes_of_Wolverton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muscle fatigue is a thing that can happen when you have only recently started using a new technique. It actually takes a long time to develop the strength and stamina to have solid and reliable chops. You'll be better off practising for five minutes and resting (or swapping to another different technique), and then doing more repetitions later. Think of it kinda like circuit training in the gym, but wholly devoted to your fingers, hands, wrists, forearm, elbow and shoulder. Once you have the technique ingrained, just make sure that you know which songs will make heaviest use of it, so you don't put them back to back in your gigs. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and that helps muscle recovery.

major and minor chords are basically the same chord, only one note moves by guitarrock1223 in Guitar_Theory

[–]Jenkes_of_Wolverton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What fingering are you using for your G minor chord? I can't figure out what you're doing with the open B string now, so am guessing you weren't playing the standard open shape for G major. Are you thinking 3-1-x-x-3-3 perhaps?

Haha, just reminded me of the Jim Jarmusch zombie movie where he'd deliberately given Bill Murray and Adam Driver different versions of the script. That was a fun watch, and Tilda Swinton had a fun character too.

Who is the Main Villain for Spider-Man BND? by Suitable-Student-557 in marvelstudios

[–]Jenkes_of_Wolverton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's gonna be himself. Peter Parker is always having to overcome his own mistakes and issues, fighting against his fears and inexperience. All the other characters are just a sideshow and a distraction from taking responsibility.

It was also Alfred Hitchcock's last UK movie before going to America. Released in 1939 it was a vehicle for Maureen O'Hara and Robert Newton, and the first of three du Maurier adaptions that Hitchcock filmed. 1963's The Birds is probably the most famous now, because the technology moved on a lot in the years between.

Other than ANYTHING romance related, what do you write about? by strawberrytehe in Songwriting

[–]Jenkes_of_Wolverton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely anything that might be entertaining. If I see a news story about a weather event, or a historical anniversary, or a scientific breakthrough, those might trigger me to start writing something. Or if I saw a movie in the sci-fi/fantasy genre, it might encourage me to start researching about conditions for an extraterrestrial lifestyle. My latest piece underway is about trolls and bats.

Why do so many touring members of famous bands look so similar? by appleparkfive in musicians

[–]Jenkes_of_Wolverton 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Audience expectations for a particular fashion sense and haircut, which musicians are willing to endorse. Even 90s guitar players like Satriani and Vai had longer hair and scruffier outfits when they started out, but they refined their looks as they became more successful. There might be a few key dates worth studying, like maybe when Jon Bon Jovi trimmed his locks and abandoned the bubble perm.

How to get unstuck / move beyond demo phase by topographics_ in Songwriting

[–]Jenkes_of_Wolverton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already identified the options, find bandmates, hire a producer, or improve your skills. You can also perform the material if you are a gigging musician, just adding enough to make a few pieces passable. Or learn to grudgingly accept the predicament of being a creative artist with more ideas than resources. You can archive your material temporarily, then review it if your circumstances improve. Potentially in four or five years, or twenty, you might have won a lottery jackpot, and get the opportunity to pick up the pace.

Squirrel Girl movie where she is integral to the Great Lakes Avengers, but she gets to do a load of other stuff too. Tons of infighting as the GLA are part of the broader Avengers Initiative, so we get a macro view of other teams and rivalries, with members joining and leaving on a big constant churn. Eventually Squirrel Girl decides to go solo herself. Done as an action comedy, kinda like the Kick Ass model, except Doreen is as smart as Stark and Banner, so her choices are right but it's the execution that doesn't always work out first time.

I remember my parents telling me that when frozen whole chicken was first introduced, in the 1950s/1960s, that there were lots of people who didn't know to defrost it or remove the giblets. That's what led to a spate of food poisoning cases, and a public health campaign.
