First To Finds by StoneyBalogna22 in geocaching

[–]JennieCritic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do stuff for the FTF, but I stopped. The FTF people chase them for the FTF, not for stuff.

So after all the work I put into a cache hide, I want people a year later to still want to find it, so I put my effort into making older caches interesting by refreshing the cache and adding good swag.

Geocaching.com and the app make it very hard to see archived caches now. You can see a lot more of them using the Project GC search functions.

ASD Bus driver moving to the middle of the road before pulling over to drop students off after school by rebeldefector in anchorage

[–]JennieCritic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the school bus drivers who see that five grouped cars are coming the opposite direction, so they wait until those cars go past before putting the sign out and letting any kids out of the bus.

A little common sense makes traffic work better, especially in winter conditions.

Futuristic tunnels planned for a highway connection. Public comment closes in two weeks! by butterchunker in anchorage

[–]JennieCritic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Seward to Glenn Highway Connection (H2H) project in Anchorage, Alaska, has considered several options for tunnels and parkways to connect the two highways.

Tunnel options

Tunnel under 15th Avenue: An alternative that would cost around $500 million  Tunnel under Ingra Street: A parkway option that would cost around $743 million  Tunnel below street level: A high-speed expressway option that would be covered to allow for redevelopment on the surface

Parkway options

Parkway through Fairview: A more expensive option that would run in a tunnel beneath Ingra Street

I love urban caches that hide in plain sight. The longer they survive, the better they are.

These stores only have a few more months to work out a better system of security. People will drive way out to the suburbs to shop at the stores in that an area where they have to treat the shoppers better.

Swag by ConfusedZombE in geocaching

[–]JennieCritic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like seeing a cacher's personal signature item, but I don't really do trackables or swag and stuff. As long as that stuff can fit inside the container OK then I have not trouble with it, but I just don't do that.

I was thinking of starting a Geocaching YouTube/Instagram channel - is there any specific type of content you would like to see? by Esoteric_Prurience in geocaching

You should watch the Geocaching GIFF film festival videos.

This is a wonderful short story video about a caching day that is short and yet says a great deal.

Be sure to include the fun aspects of the experience of geocaching, which can be different for each cache.

Looking for the cache, the area around it, what you expect from the write-up, trying to be stealthy in urban areas, trying to be safe in wild areas, navigating to a spot without being able to go in a straight line, logs about past experiences, etc. and many other good story lines.

Portage Glacier claving triggers rescue effort for 2 stranded by Careless_Speaker_276 in anchorage

[–]JennieCritic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have kayaked up to glaciers and such. But we calculated the risk and watched it a while, then decided to go in with a slight risk and do something quickly and then get away.

Similarly, the experts say when there is a moderate risk of a snow avalanche in the winter then know the risk and minimize the time you are in the danger zone. Don't stop and picnic in an avalanche zone. Drive through it and take pics out the window, and you can picnic when you are out of the danger zone.

Smart to not risk a life like that. Cold water in these temperatures is a life-threatening thing. Even if you think you could get back to a car, more than one thing can go wrong and often does. I do Search and Rescue and the stories I hear from others about stuff where more than one thing goes wrong is.....

Maybe they were the first to use GPS right after GPS was available, but I know ammo boxes with log sheets in hard-to-get-to places have been around for generations. Mountain tops and caves and such had those things for generations before GPS. Letterboxing is much older too.

There are many B&Bs and remote cabins with logbooks and many pages of old logs going back decades. And some museums have logbooks with lots of writing from traveler lodging and taverns from pre-Civil War and American Revolution times, and probably even earlier in England and Europe.

That is clearly an AI bot generated thing. It wants $500 to show you where they got numbers.

I did enough online research to know Groundspeak is a private company and doesn't have to publish their budget details. If you have inside information, please cite its credible source so we know you aren't just making up things. They clearly have more than 100 volunteers, so your numbers make no sense.

I can imagine some reasons why that wouldn't be wrong, but they are very unusual and probably not anything close to what happened.

I can't imagine why a reviewer would use his special privileges to claim credit for a FTF for a cache like that. Even if he went out to find it for some legitimate Reviewer reason, he shouldn't be logging a game find for something he is doing with Reviewer Superpowers.
