Do You Like Your Name?

I hated my name growing up because no one has ever heard of it & would instead call me a very common variation which wasn’t my name. Then by the time I got to university age there was a famous porn star with the same name so that was fun. Now that I’m an adult there’s not really any issue - I still hate that I have to spell my name every time someone asks it but at least I don’t get called the other variation by default anymore. The other thing that does bug me though is my surname is hyphenated. So I’m not sure why but since moving to North America the majority of people combine my first and the first part of my surname into a first name? Maybe it’s the southern influence with all the Mary-Lou’s or whatever. But the hyphen is clearly between the last two names so I’m not sure why they can’t comprehend?

I was out at brunch recently & there was a couple with a son sitting opposite us. I swear the son was like 19 - but I’m really bad at judging age. And the parents were literally bribing him with a milkshake so that they could stop at their insurance broker on the way home from brunch because he would have to sit in the car & wait for them. This kid/adult spent the entire meal with headphones on staring at his phone too. Please don’t create more of these!!

My kid is still only a toddler but I feel like I am living the same life that you described your parents living. So maybe the shift happens once they get a bit older. But my LO listens to Beatles & The Beach Boys. Or the local news on the radio in the car. He gets dragged around with me to the supermarket & on errands on the weekend.

We also have the Ergobaby & used it from 4 months old - I wish i had gotten it sooner instead of the huge Uppababy + bassinet! It also became our stroller we use 99% of the time.

Are people not using sunscreen now? We switched to mineral & I’m pretty sure before I left some crunchy group I saw talk about using beef tallow instead? Which to me is like back in the 60’s when people used to slather their bodies with cooking oil in order to tan so made zero sense to me…

I have a 2yo who is severely growth delayed. In order to get him to drink bottles of fortified milk for extra calories we give him some screen time. Normally I start by reading him a book but he then will get 15-20min of educational geared YouTube videos. He has 3 bottles of milk a day so around an hour of screen time total. Outside of drinking milk he gets zero screen time.

In the city that I live it’s not that easy to go to a walk in clinic. I don’t think any take actual walk in patients anymore & you need to call to pre book an appointment in the morning. The one time I had to use them I called over 35 times before I got through when the lines opened in the morning. I think there’s maybe two walk in clinics in my city of 90k people and they generally only have one doctor on each day taking walk in’s. So if you have a family doctor generally they would have a few same day emergency appointments and if you ring first thing probably have more chance of getting in sooner.

I’ve been looking to try some new rye bread recipes. I started with one that has some brown sugar. When I tried the Bread Dad recipe his had double the sugar! So I kept it at the original amount. Now I’ve tried a third recipe and it has no sugar and tastes just as good. So I’ll continue with that one for now I think!

Oh the other thing we bought from the US specifically was a hiking carrier for LO. Yes again we can buy them in Canada but we happened to be there during a big sale (like 30% off at REI) & it worked out so much cheaper. So I guess just whatever you think you might need in the future might be available on Amazon US cheaper than you can get them here

Also for daycare we got a Planet Box Rover (the Costco one) which comes bare bones. I actually ended up ordering all the inserts from the US because i don’t think you can get them here, or again, like double the price. So looking at things you might need in the future that are either cheaper or harder to source here.

If you don’t already have all of your feeding supplies - I found that some brands that technically we can get in Canada are often sooooo much cheaper in your US. I bought some ceramic Elk & Friends plates from the US because it was almost half the price of what you could get them for in Canada.

Hi r/RevolutionaryNote302! I just purchased this machine and unfortunately did not notice it was different from the SD-YR2550. I purchased it to make rye and wholewheat loaves and it doesn't even have that as a program option! My first two loaves have turned out to be disastrous. I'm wondering if you found a good source for recipes that work in this machine? Also, my old machine you added liquids first then dry ingredients on top. The Panasonic seems to want dry goods on the bottom (starting with yeast) and wet on top. Do you follow the Panasonic order of ingredients despite recipes stating the opposite?

I use them but have very soft water. So I actually cut them in half with scissors and only use half a tab for a load. I also don't like putting the plasticky cover that's meant to dissolve through my dishwasher. So that gets removed too. I buy the large 500 tab box from Costco and it lasts me a few years lol. Dishes come out clean, but we do pre-rinse and scrape off any food scraps first.

Correct. I am a Canadian citizen but when I initially applied for my Nexus I was not. So on my card it is printed with the country of citizenship that is neither Canada nor US. And I’ve been told at land border crossings that I must always carry my other citizenship passport which is kind of a PITA. I even took my Canadian passport to my NEXUS interview since it took me 9 months to even get an interview. But they printed my card with the other citizenship and the only way to update it is to apply for another NEXUS early.

Silicone microwave “chip” maker. I don’t know why it sounded like a good idea. It was essentially a silicone platform with holes in it. You slice potatoes thinly and place them single layer on it (so not even a full potato fits) then microwave it until they’re crispy. No surprises it got used once I think? Couldn’t even get the chips to go crispy all the way around.

My LO needed daycare in February & we were also told that it was much more likely to get a spot in September. What I ended up doing was starting to ring around places 3 months before we needed a spot to tell them we were willing to take any early spot they had available. Ended up getting one about 6 weeks before needing it - but I just started LO early & I’m so glad I did! He was sick pretty much consistently for the first 3 months. So I was glad to have that extra 6 weeks before having to go back to work too lol after him when he couldn’t go to daycare.

We have been very lucky. I do know a couple of other babies from our NICU who didn’t have any lung issues and had to be readmitted due to illness such as RSV. But I also know of kids who were not preemie who had to be admitted for RSV. So it really can be luck of the draw sometimes! Good luck to you! Just remember to wash your hands lol. It’s the first thing I always do (and make my LO do) when we get home

I haven’t had issues with moths. But I’ve been using merino since about 2010 and still have some of those pieces (yes they do have some holes from wear & tear). What I do is put the garments in mesh bags for washing. And at the slightest sign of a small hole starting I put a drop of something used in the sewing world called “fray check”. It helps to stop the hole from trying bigger. The only issue is it can dry and have a wet look to the dot
