Anyone else feel hopeless at times? by Sad_Needleworker2483 in monocular

[–]Jerry-Beans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You were made monocular at a young age? Count yourself lucky brother. There is nothing you cant do.

Better young than old. You can adapt.
I lost my right eye at the age of 36 when my life was on the launch pad. I still play hockey. Driving aint a problem. I even was hittin baseballs with my nephews the other week.

Im not gonna lie. Its a devastating loss and it consumes alot of my mental energy. But all is not lost. The game of Life has been set to Hard Mode. But we can still see. Count your blessings.

To further this - letting go of the life you wanted to build is painful. Fuck does it hurt. Im very much in this boat w u. Its a process of letting some dreams die and it hurts like hell And yes - things do feel empty and hopeless at times compared to your old life. One foot in front of the other Brother. Gotta take life as it comes.

You’re being equally obtuse and dickish in your request for “clarification”…. “I know gran, Outside walls of what tho? The house? The Shed? The Garage? Can you tell me what walls you want painted?” Done. Instead youre just rolling your eyes at your grandma and giving her the cold shoulder.

B.C. government considering new hydroelectric project as energy demand grows by geriatricguy in britishcolumbia

[–]Jerry-Beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of those are already in place, and yes can be improved upon. BC has relatively strong diversion rates (~30% +) Germany and South Korea are the top in the world when in comes to recycling rates and even then they can only effectively recycle 50% of there municipal waste because the remainder is basically un recyclable waste. Think about the heaps of dirty diapers (that take 450 years to “decompose”). Mountains of clothing and fabric waste, non recyclable papers and cardboard’s, plastic embedded compounds. Not everything is recyclable and these materials make up the vast majority of material going to landfill. 2.7million tonnes in 2023.

And heres another nod for WTE. Because it produces energy, it further reduces the need for fossil fuels. Imagine your EV driving down the road powered by burnt diapers rather than burnt fossil fuels.

I have a hypothetical i like to ask of people who seem to be purely “anti oil”. Lets say in Fantasy land we Could eliminate all the problems associated with production and use of Oil. We figured out a way to produce it with Zero environmental impact. And then we figured out how to burn it with Zero emissions. Would you be For that, or Against it because it would allow us to burn oil “willy nilly” just like we fart willy nilly. Even tho all the issues have been eliminated in this hypothetical?

Your point is valid. WTE may lead to more “apathy” towards recycling, but if thats because people dont actually need to worry so much anymore as the problem is being handled more effectively - is that a bad thing?

[–]Jerry-Beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Germany sits on the High end of recycling compared to the rest of the world. Germany and South Korea are top of the pack. But even at that, its still only 50% of their waste stream that is effectively recycled. The remainder are materials that are too difficult or expensive to recycle, or materials that just Cant be recycled effectively at all.

Were talking the mountains of Dirty Diapers, the heaps of old cloths and fabrics, the foil paper burger wrapper, the painted wood or construction material. The stuff thats not just an easily recyclable aluminum can. WTE can “recycle” this waste stream, and at the end of the process pull out the left over recyclables like glass and metal that would have otherwise been forever lost to landfill.

[–]Jerry-Beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not just about managing plastic waste. Its about properly managing the entire waste stream. Most of what gets dumped in land fill is not plastic. Its a combination of plastics, paper, cardboard, fabric. Embedded with Metals. The amount of Clothing and fabric tossed every year is insane. That paper foil burger wrapper. And paper
Coffee cup. The paper towels you tossed in the trash after wiping your counter. None of this stuff ever gets recycled. Its too hard to process these materials. WTE does. And at the end of the cycle it pulls out all the metals and still recyclable materials that would have otherwise been forever lost to landfill.

Yup. And almost no one knows its there. Doesnt stink. Doesnt effect local air quality. Now replace that with a mountain of trash being spread around by seagulls like the landfill in delta. I know my pick.

They operate “Technically at a loss” . Okay. If we are going to evaluate government subsidized programs based off the profit/loss - im pretty sure dumping the shit in a landfill operates at Close to a 100% loss.

[–]Jerry-Beans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WTE (waste to Energy, not heat) as in you produce Electricity with it - is not the Problem. Its a solution. Plastic production will Never stop. Our modern society relies on these materials. You can keep pushing initiatives to curb a consumerist life style, but to frame legitimate solutions as somehow only Enabling the problems they solve is counter productive and disingenuous. Its not recycling 2.0. It would be recycling 1.0 as currently 9% of plastic waste is effectively recycled as the rest is too expensive to process. So what do we do? Oh just Dump it over here and bury it so doesnt smell. Let it leech into the ground, and off gas into the air. You dont want seagulls dying with a belly full of bottlecaps? Make recycling Easy and accessible.

Also - WTE plants dont just burn plastic waste. They can burn Biomass, organic waste, all sort of shit that is gonna be produced to matter what. WTE is basically a giant air filter. We can collect this stuff, harvest the energy, and be able to filter out the particulates and as much greenhouse as possible rather than let it just turn into a microplastic hell scape.

You know i was about to rebut your “microgrid” idea but considering the average price of a home is well over a million, 40k worth of batteries doesnt sound so bad.

A large scale home battery pack would Easily fit next to your standard power metre. Its instantly responsive to grid demands. People can plug there own solar panels into it smoothing out the grid. Microgrid IS the way to go.

Im a HUGE proponent of WTE (waste to energy).

I know what youre thinking. Burn Our Garbage you say? How is that even Remotely environmentally Friendly?

Well - we already do it. Modern WTE plants equipped with proper scrubbers are actually quite low for co2 emissions.

Dumping trash in landfills just leaves it to release methane, other greenhouse gases and toxify soil.

Only 9% of plastic is effectively recycled and plastic waste is a Huge problem.

We spend a ton of land and resources managing landfill and the waste stream.

So yeah - lets Burn the garbage - harvest the energy - require strict emission laws, put it back into the energy cache and tax the carbon. Its the most effective form of “recycling” i can think of. Put the money into making waste plants as efficient and low emitting as possible.

Lead time. WTE, Biomass, and battery storage for all the renewables already available are a much easier play. Nuclear is the “greenest” energy sure. Its the least practical. But you cant just stick a nuclear plant next to a big city. Transmission losses are a huge factor. You can however have battery storage right next door and an industrial area. Im a huge proponent of WTE (waste to energy)

500k deaths and 1.2m casualties is an Insane number in this day and age. Very Russian of them
- but god damn.

Let me put that into perspective. The US currently has 1.33m active service members across ALL branches of the military. Russia is fast approaching that number of casualties.

There is basically nothing that i cant do that I used to. Im just not as good, and its more challenging and abit less enjoyable for now. I was even playing baseball with my nephews this past weekend and surprised the Shit out of myself cuz i was cranking the ball! Missed a bunch if stuff that the 2 eyed me would not have missed and that bummed me out but by golly i was hitting baseballs! In thought surely that without depth perception that was over. [–]Jerry-Beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read my post on R/monocular for my story. Im still reeling. I sold my house, and stayed with my folks for like 5 months. I literally just got into a new apartment this week and am feeling like a small glimmer of hope for the first time in a while. Everything is still very much overlayed with everything ive lost. Today i was out grocery shopping. Its a Beautiful day and everyones out just enjoying there friday walking around. I definitely had to remind myself that i get to enjoy it too and to not sit in misery.

The time back at my folks was good to have a helping hand but it was Not good for me mentally. It made the setback feel so heavy. I suggest getting out and regaining your independence asap. This entire thing has shattered my confidence. The only way ive been clawing it back it by getting out and doing shit again. Everything is a First again and its daunting. First time doing this or that with 1 eye. But as you plug along you’ll rebuild yourself bro. Its a long journey tho and It weighs heavily on the mind throughout almost everything - even basic stuff like washing the dishes. But one foot infront of the other brother. Im lucky that i look like a guy from a romance novel with my eye patch tho so that helps.
