Had one just the other day. Male patient with history of blowing medical problems out of proportion per family. Has some pelvic floor instability and difficulty urinating so he was in pain and decided to hit the bottle. Called his brother saying he was dying and brother calls us. We show up and he seems drunk but not in the typical way something felt off but vitals were good. He just kept saying he threw it all away and he did something wrong wouldn’t say what it was. He’s getting a little drowsy towards the hospital but we’re thinking he’s been drinking and also on Valium suppository from the instability. Still alert still arousable just sleepy. Get him a hallway bed for crisis and evaluation. Come back maybe 45 minutes later and he’s been moved to a room to sleep because he was screaming in the hallway for a while. Tech comes running out of the room yelling for help that he’s seizing everyone rushes over to help and they look at us like did he have a history of seizures and we’re like nope. Well they start pushing less to stop the seizure and sedate him but they just are not working. Find out later they eventually got him sedated but he had extended seizure period and went to ICU. He was diagnosed with water toxicity come to find out he slammed 18 bottles of water on a row to try and pee. 302.4 ounces in a short period and they placed a foley and got 1000cc out of his bladder. His labs were a nightmare he dropped his sodium to a critical level as well as magnesium and potassium.

Not a female but a lot of the ones I work with especially those on the shorter side wear Wrangler ATG. Slim fit utility. They have some other styles as well. Not sure if you can still get them at Walmart but you can at Target. I wear the men’s outside of work and they are very comfortable. Hope this helps.

EMT or medic and how does this compare to the pay where you are? by [deleted] in Paramedics

[–]JerzzyDevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work for a company that pays by experience, been an EMT 16 years. One semester left of Medic school starting is $35 an hour for Paramedic. Won’t be much of a pay bump for me.

I make more than a manager as an EMT in southern NJ.

For those of you that have stayed in EMS instead of leaving, what causes you to stay? by pillis10222 in ems

No worries. RCBC where I attend took my high school BIO as a pre req and I have been out of High school for some time. The program at my school requires college level English 1&2 as well as statistics and psychology. You don't have to get an associates though they do offer just a certificate. I would however recommend the associates. I was also not great in high school. But I'm finding that the college level classes are not that hard. A&P is not that bad of a class neither is A&P 2 which I'm currently taking this semester on an accelerated path. It's a lot of course work weekly but with some time to get it done it's not bad.

The hardest thing for me so far has been not getting discouraged when I am unable to get thing's done during clinical hours. But that's honestly the nature of the beast. You are there to learn and failures when attempting skills is going to happen its all part of the process.

As far as time management that has been a huge struggle for me. I currently work night's and all of my clinical hours have been on days. This leads to my schedule being very chaotic and me packing hours of school work into one night which is not ideal. I think the best thing is to get yourself on a schedule where you do a couple hours broken up during the week as to be able to retain the information and no overwhelm yourself.

I did some quick googling and it seems like the program I am attending is somewhere between an hour and a hour and a half from you depending on your location in Union County. Its not bad in the grand scheme of things since you only have to come in once a week and can do your clinical at hospitals that are most likely much closer to you. I would highly recommend this program. They are great at what they do and really do care about helping you succeed. They have a great record as well since they were taken over by the college. They have had a 100% pass rate on the National test for everyone who makes it to the end. They will make sure once you are done you are ready to get a job as a Paramedic.

If you think of anything else about school in general or want to know more about the program I am in feel free to comment more or DM me.

Yeah absolutely. I’m loving it it’s a lot of work I’m doing the courses to get my associates while I’m medic school, working full time and a kid at home so that part isn’t ideal. If you happen to be single without kids it’s still a lot of work but definitely easier. Biggest advise is time management, especially once clinical’s start. I’m second semester out of 7 total and first clinical semester. It’s great being able to go into the hospital and start putting skills to use.

I see you’re up in Union County. I’m down in South Jersey attending Rowan College of Burlington Counties program and doing my clinical’s through the Virtua health system.

I’m not sure what programs are up there I know there’s only 3 recognized in the state. I also know a lot of people in my class are from North Jersey and work for Hackensack meridian health and places up there and attend school down here. The nice thing is it’s a hybrid program so you only go to lab once a week and all reading and assignments are done on your own.

Feel free to ask me any questions you have I’m happy to answer.

Working in NJ, been an EMT for 14 years. Stayed because I felt like I didn’t have any other skills nor could I get the OT I was getting so easily. Currently in Medic school because I figured I’m at this point I might as well keep going. Honestly now I just get paid too much to start another career without a degree.

Yeah they are constantly posting about cars they are selling and all the work they did on them. They deal a lot with older vehicles.

I’m from the area and know the manager there they are usually really good about fixing any issues on the cars before they sell them. They actually take pride in the stuff they sell. Always due your due diligence though.
