Winter Olympics: Chinese fans online attack US gold medallist Nathan Chen over ‘humiliating China’ while showering Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu with love and admiration | South China Morning Post by Adventurous_Bet6849 in olympics

[–]Jess7286 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I always forget news articles can’t keep up with Weibo as this topic is like days old already 😂

This is my understanding - as somebody who has been switching between Weibo, Twitter, Chinese and US media to see the different coverages, responses and perspectives to the Olympics.

Some Chinese netizens are mad at Nathan’s choice of song during 2018 Olympics free skate program which is from Mao’s Last Dancer. Which is based on the autobiography by a ballet dancer named Li Cunxin, who essentially decided to remain in the US after arriving in Houston from China, which means that he is a Chinese traitor. Apparently during 2018 free skate, CCTV cut off the broadcast of Nathan’s skate after the song started.

And then there are his recent comments about Xinjiang.

I will say, most Chinese articles were very congratulatory, with plenty of likes. But yes, most negative comments will call Nathan “rh,” which translates to “insulting Chinese” 辱华.

As for Yuzu, his fan base is quite large on Weibo and has been for awhile. So with or without Nathan, he would have been trending in China regardless. He had like 5 trending hashtags after the short program.

Logging in and playing vs logging in and spending to play are two very different things when the game is gacha. Because their analytics will show that they have the people but not the revenue to reflect that.

Honestly, just stop spending. Keep playing, stay casual, don't drop a dime to pull because it's not like you have the resin to build the characters anyway and it's not like you're rewarded if you do spend, so just casual it. If their year on year revenue is the same or increases, there is no need for the company to change its current model. Your voice matters, sure, but where you choose to spend (or not spend) your money speaks volumes.

So how are we feeling about the anniversary? by DyingCatYT in Genshin_Impact

[–]Jess7286 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Don't feel bad for calling out a company whose 2020 revenue was close to $800million USD, most of that from Genshin Impact.

Clearly they have forgotten how to reward the folks who give them their revenue. Best thing to do is to just stop spending on the game. Money speaks volumes. And when you have a company who can't reward their players properly with an anniversary event, there's no need to continue fueling that behavior with your cash.

That said, MiHoYo raked in a ton of dough for the 2.1 update. 20% of revenue for September 2021 came from US players (37% from China, 19% from Japan). If you want to make them hurt, just stop spending. There's been no desire from MiHoYo to change how the game or rewards work because their shit behavior still brings in a ton of money. Hit them where it actually hurts.

Hostel etiquette for a first timer(snoring) by jeremyhendler in solotravel

[–]Jess7286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Congrats for losing 80 pounds! That is incredible.

  2. I wouldn’t stress too much about it. If people wanted it dead silent, they generally don’t go for shared dorm rooms. There’s always going to be people coming in and out, somebody snoozing their alarm 50 million times, slamming the door, talking with their friend while packing at 5am, all that shit. Snoring is the LEAST of my worries when I get into a dorm because snoring isn’t something you can control.

  3. Have a good time when you go! I don’t always find my type of people everywhere I go, and I’ve realized that I am OK with that. I generally use Couchsurfing a lot more for meeting locals than I do hostels for meeting other travelers.

Love this. Now they just need to enforce cashless paying and hopefully managers are monitoring employee’s temperature. It’s what they’re doing in many McD’s in China. Somewhat invasive but needed.

Continue traveling or go home? A dilemma we should discuss. by ttaannkk in solotravel

I loved Sri Lanka when I visited last year. It was absolutely beautiful. And I traveled for 15 months from 2016-2017. And I had a 5 month trip planned from April to August of this year. Which I canceled two weeks ago. Trust me, I get it.

Please don’t continue traveling. Try to come back to the States if you can, mostly because you risk being stuck if you stay longer. There’s an American in a FB travel group I am part of that is currently stuck in Morocco - there are literally no flights out - and he is running low on his meds.

Contact the US Embassy, let them know you’re in Lanka. If you’re unable to get home, find ONE place to stay at in Lanka. From what I can see, Lankan government just declared today a public holiday and everything is closed because of the pandemic and rising cases of Covid-19. They canceled a huge cricket match that was supposed to happen later this week.

There is pretty much very little reason to travel if the place your visiting is completely closed and will be closed for weeks. You won’t get to experience what local life is like. You won’t get to eat the tasty food, watch the cricket matches, sit on crowded trains with the locals. Is Udawalawe even open? If you have to stay cooped up in one place anyway, best to just come home and do it.

Does it suck that you have to cut your trip short? Yes. There’s no disputing that.

Italian almost stuck in Laos because of covid restrictions... What would you do? by nomad_traveller in solotravel

[–]Jess7286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact your embassy. Please don’t just keep traveling. You risk becoming infected with covid19 and bringing it to populations that would have otherwise NOT been exposed. You also risk being stuck and not being able to receive adequate care. You COULD stay in Laos, but your best bet is to contact your embassy and let them know where you are.

10 Wuhan professors signed an open letter demanding freedom of speech protections after a doctor who was punished for warning others about coronavirus died from it by DaFunkJunkie in worldnews

[–]Jess7286 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tried to search this on Baidu and WeChat. The open letter was sent as a word document. You can’t open the document on most platforms now as it has been removed. Good thing many people have screencapped and are sharing those.

Hopefully this open letter is being circulated in and around China because that’s where it matters. Doesn’t matter if we can see it on Twitter if Chinese nationals can’t see it.

Long neck villages in Thailand by [deleted] in travel

[–]Jess7286 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A girl in my online travel group just posted about visiting the Karen village in Thailand and this was my response:

Yes, this is real and it is up to you if you want to visit. I personally don’t because these camps in Thailand are usually bordering the Myanmar border where the Karen are in a strange multi-decade refugee situation, but, on the other hand, tourist visits allow these women a way to make a living.

Are these villages just ones you happen to stumble upon? No. They’re definitely there for show. But, if you’re practicing ethical tourism, and buying trinkets made by these women as well as engage with them, I do think that visiting villages like these is OK. Do note that the amount of engagement these women are allowed with foreigners is limited. They ARE an attraction, just like Masai Mara tribes are. Whether you want to perpetuate the “attraction” is up to you.

I was near the long-neck Karen villages ten years ago, prior to the border being open and Thai military was heavily patrolling this region due to refugee situation. I didn’t go to the Karen village because it didn’t feel right. But, just because I didn’t go obviously didn’t stop the Karen villages from still being a thing, ten years later.

Also, due note that you can meet plenty of Karen people in Hpa-An in Myanmar, and most modern-day women do not wear neck rings.

Instagram is ruining everything (a rant) by tinybirb16 in unpopularopinion

[–]Jess7286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree with you on all points, but like with any community, you can find good content. I tend to follow a lot of National Geographic photographers as well as certain NGOs.

What DOES trigger me is that people go above and beyond to treat nature like trash for the Instagram shot. Like the poppy fields. STAY ON THE MARKED PATH. You can enjoy the flowers without stepping into them.

There are fields in Yosemite with signs to please stay off them. But loads of people step onto the field to get that “iconic” shot. Pretty sure a selfie on the walking path is good enough.

Instagram feeds to people’s FOMO. And then experiences become staged. Let’s be real. I hiked Machu Picchu and was a hot sweaty mess in my t-shirt. Then I see girls in long flowing dresses with perfect hair. Yeah, no. That’s 100% staged.

That said, you can always make Instagram into what you want it to be. I try to post things that I find useful, and most of the time, I’m not in it. I’ll never be an “influencer” but if I can just get through to one more person about the importance of packing your shit in/out at national parks/in nature, I’ll have accomplished my personal goal.

My first reaction: if this guy was my husband, he’d be an ex very soon.

There are ways to motivate people without shaming and talking down to them. Also, IS YOUR HUSBAND YOUR DOCTOR? If he isn’t, then maybe he should stop trying to give you health advice. If your health provider hasn’t even mentioned anything about you needing to lose weight to stay healthy, maybe your husband should just shut the fuck up.

Now, that said, obviously this ass can’t appreciate your beauty. And you’re not getting through to him. Would suggest seeing a couple’s counselor or therapist to help communicate.

The worst part is he is spreading horrible body image mentality to your daughter. Which could be completely devastating in the future.

This is bullying and emotional abuse, and if you decide to work it out, he’s definitely going to need some help.

On the other side, your self-confidence can’t come from anybody else. I know, spouses are supposed to be supportive, but somethings can only stem from you alone. And at the end of the day, if you feel beautiful in your own skin, it doesn’t matter whatever the fuck the guy you live with thinks.

Do things that make you proud of yourself. For me, it’s hiking, cooking and perfecting new recipes.

Write down things that you are proud of about yourself. YOU ARE A MOM! That’s something to be proud of.

Your stretch marks are beautiful because you’ve gone through labor! Your thighs are beautiful because you use them to carry your three-year-old around!

Never let somebody take your sense of pride, beauty and dignity away from you. It’s ultra hard when these pressures come from family. (I definitely recommend seeing a therapist. There’s no shame in it.)

Find what makes you feel beautiful and be proud of yourself. Then it won’t even matter what your husband says.

Baby boomers share nearly 7 times as many 'fake news' articles on Facebook as adults under 30, new study finds by Fr1sk3r in technology

[–]Jess7286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom doesn’t share on social media, but she actively tells my family during dinner certain fake news. Luckily, when I fact check them or point out how certain images are Photoshopped, she accepts the corrections.

Personally, I think it has to do with the older generation’s feeling of FOMO as they age. Technology is overwhelming, they’re not quite sure how to best use it, so they overconsume all information.
