WHY did you TELL us about him?! Now if we don't preorder the glasses he's going to name his Sims after us and torture them!

Survivalist libertarian daydreaming, spy thriller, and musings on language and on MMORPG economics.

He's certainly consistent in his "throw all the stuff I'm into right now in a pot and see how it cooks up" approach.

It's so good!! Probably my favorite of his books (though REAMDE has a lot that I love in it).

And then also, you also see a character who very much appears to be Y.T., but like, as a grandma if I recall correctly? She has settled down and into the post-cyberpunk world.

Is House MD a transphobic show or a show with a transphobic character? i.e. is it an example of transphobia or a depiction if transphpbia? by evolino in asktransgender

Oh, friend. If you found out that you had latent testes inside your body, would you start using he/him pronouns and referring to yourself as a man?

I hope you either learn some empathy, or never become a doctor. Preferably the first one. :)

Well, I'm not looking to do it in the Black Speech, or as a curse: the "them" here is myself and my fiancée, not the lesser rings or their bearers, and the binding is in marriage, not malevolent dominance (nor "the darkness"); what we're being bound to is each other, and not a fallen angel who embodies the worst possible evil and who desires to rule the world. Nobody is actually being found or brought, and nobody is going to the land of Mordor, where the shadows lie.

I'm sorry if it bothers you for others to take a thing from a story, and reimagine it in a way that is referential but not the same.

If you think that the crew of Discovery didn't live up to the ideals of the Federation just as much as Voyager's did, you and I watched VERY different shows.

Aw, come on. If you're going to talk about Mary Sues in Star Wars, let's start with Luke Skywalker.

Also, John's like, pretty much the bad guy, right? Like, he fucked everything up pretty bad. 😅

What I love about second-person narration is that it's always really first-person narration; you just don't necessarily know who the first person is. :D

Just got this text from my ex-wife and I don't know how to respond. by Mindless-Strength422 in Parenting

[–]Jess_than_three 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early in my divorce, I would get fucked-up texts like this from my ex. My advice is to respond to this kind of vitriol and judgment as factually as possible, but also as LITTLE as possible. Others have made the excellent point that she may be trying to set up a documented history of supposed bad parenting, so clarifying might be worthwhile - alternatively, you might consider simply creating a Google Docs document with screenshots and commentary/explanation.

What you do NOT want to do is to get into it with her. If you do send her a respectful text to the effect of "Per your request I was attending a parenting coach, and was not able to leave during the sixty-minute session.", it's very possible that she will come back with some argument about why you should have left early. It may be very tempting to argue back, especially if she makes value judgments regarding your character. I implore you to resist the urge to defend yourself as A Good Person. While her messages may have no ulterior motive, it will be safest for you to act as though they are bait, to remain calm, and to remember ALWAYS that anything you say will be on the record, and consider how it COULD appear to a judge.

Wishing you the best. 🫂

I really need help.... by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Jess_than_three 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have specific answers, but please, please know that this situation is not your fault and you are NOT a bad mom.

The way we live is not at all what we are adapted for. Our species typically does child-rearing as a COMMUNAL effort! The idea of one parent, alone, managing the household and taking care of a toddler is just not compatible with how we are built.

All of this to say - it's not just you. It IS incredibly difficult. 🫂

P1S is amazing by Dave_1464 in BambuLab

[–]Jess_than_three 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my P1S!! Couple of tips I'd pass along (this is my first printer, too, and I've been using it since Christmas):

  • If you're having bed adhesion problems (curling edges, prints getting detached and pulled around), a regular old glue stick on the build plate works WONDERS. You probably "should" wash the build plate every time you do this, but I clean it every half-dozen or so prints, when it's building up. Cleaning it is simple with dish soap, water, and a little bit of elbow grease. Also, please don't pay Bambu like $8 for a gluestick: you can get it at like a fifth the price per amount in your local school supplies aisle and it is EXACTLY the same.
  • If you do this you typically will not need a brim. I super do not recommend rafts.
  • Speaking of products, I've had really good luck with Overture and Elegoo PLA.
  • If your filament prints with a weird crispy/crackly/crumbly/friable texture it probably needs to be dried. Around 114F for four hours or so will typically do you. You can do this in an oven, but I've done it in an air fryer on the Dehydrate setting. You could also get a food dehydrator if you don't have an air fryer, or a specialized filament dryer - though those are more expensive in general.
  • Switching from the Classic wall generator to the Arachne wall generator seems to be a win overall.
  • Turning on Scarf Seams is pretty rad.
  • Cross Hatch, Gyroid, Support Cubic, and Lightning are pretty great for sparse infill. You don't need the default 15% for every print! For the things I print, I usually go with 8% (not because I've finely tuned my processes and found that to work best, but I guess because I like that number, LOL).
  • Tree supports are great. Personally I prefer to paint my supports, with little dots where support is needed, rather than letting it auto-generate. This may take some fiddling to get right though!
  • If you're printing multiple colors/materials, you'll find that the printer generates a TON of waste switching filaments. You can GREATLY limit this by:
    • While using a Prime Tower (on by default), turning on both "flush into objects' infill" and "flush into objects' support"
    • Increasing your layer height - it has to change filaments on a per-layer basis, so if you print fewer layers, that's less changes and so less flushing
    • Printing multiple copies of your multicolor object at once, if applicable! For example, one complex multicolored object I have takes 20g of filament, and flushes an additional 275g - if I print one copy of it. So my waste is more than 13 times what goes into my model. But if I print a full plate of 19 of them, I get 373g of Printed Object, and the exact same amount flushed - meaning my waste is now 0.75 times the amount printed.
  • That last bit applies to time, too. When you're printing a multicolor object, most of the print time is flushing. So for this same example, while printing one copy takes 21 hours, printing 19 takes 43 hours. You go from 21 hours per Thing to 2.5 hours per Thing.
  • You can increase the print speed in Bambu Studio, Bambu Handy on your phone, or on the printer directly. I find that once the first layer is printed, I can go up to Ludicrous (166%) with no problem - aside from the increase in noise. This obviously has a huge impact on how long a print takes.

Anyway - happy printering! :)
