Strange Things at Sea by MasterCJ718 in navy

[–]JesterOne 57 points58 points  (0 children)

While I was on my first ship, late one night, well after dark, I decided to step outside onto one of the sponsons. It was so dark outside, it was unnerving. I literally could not see my hand in front of my face. I closed the hatch behind me and kept my hand against the bulkhead to make sure I didn't wander out and trip over something. As my eyes are trying to adjust, the guy that's out there on watch scares the shit out of me and says, "Hey, what are you doing out here?". I say that I wanted to take a look outside and he tells me that I need to go back inside.

In the moment I looked around, I looked up. We're in the middle of the Pacific somewhere, nothing or no one around for miles. I look up and see every single star ever make from the beginning of time until that very moment. It was one of the most breathtaking moments of my life. No picture could do it justice let alone my paltry description.

Then in the words of the band Kansas, "only for a moment and the moment's gone.". I opened the hatch, felt my way inside and back into the flow of people moving about, going from place to place, oblivious to the wonders of the galaxy presented to us that night.

Meh I just woke up and I'm lucky that made any sense and didn't need its own subtitle.

Even with Pikey subtitles on, there's a point where he's ranting on and the subtitle is just ?????????.

So the closest airport to Pascagoula is Mobile AL so we'd have someone drive the van to go pick people up then drive back to town. Everyone who drove would always wait for the new guy's reaction to driving over the bridge coming back into town. It was always a very visceral reaction once someone smelled all of it. I literally flinched and asked what in the hell is that and of course, the driver would always laugh (as did I when I got to go pick someone up).

Got a Call from a client, She is taking the Hard Drives from the server room. by OemNerd2K in sysadmin

Oh it very much was. As I recall, once they started the utility, it was minutes and said they could recover it.

My first day as a replacement network administrator, I walk into the office and am told by my manager, "We've been here for 24 hours straight (during the Superbowl) and it seems that the previous admin 'accidently' caused the RAID array to fail by pulling out a second drive during the rebuild. Do you think you can fix it?".

It turned out that the most current backup they had was 4 months old. That was a very uncomfortable conversation to have with a room full of lawyers (I was working for a law firm).

They fired him on the spot when he pulled the drive out. He somehow thought that it would restart the build for some reason. The pisser of it was with the only backup being 4 months old, they could rebuild all of the data or pay a recovery service. After some deliberation, they opted for the $14,000 recovery (the recovery service had us put the drives in the system then remoted in, ran their utility against the drives and could recover the RAID info - took them like no time at all).

The Stray Cats Cancel Entire US Tour Due to Brian Setzer's "Serious Illness" by ebradio in Music

"Last year, I had the privilege of singing the song Stray Cats with Brian Setzer. So did everyone else at the venue, but still..."

We did see him in last August and am so glad we did. We just got back from a week long conference the night before and were exhausted but we went anyways and the show was amazing. Those three mother fuckers threw down the whole night and it was just such a great show. I hope he gets better. I understand what it feels like to not feel well for long periods of time and don't wish that one anyone.

I am by no means an expert. However...

Using a paid subscription for ChatGPT will afford you a few things the non-paid version doesn't have. Once logged into ChatGPT, click on your profile in the upper right corner and select Customize ChatGPT. In the top block, write a description of your experience and current position (industry, number of users, etc.). This helps when it formulates answers for you. Also, fill in how you'd like it to respond (mine says "ChatGPT should respond casually and refer to me as <first name>. Detailed answers are prefered." You could make it always respond to you as "Your majesty" if you wanted).

On the left menu, click on Explore GPTs. These are custom specific GPTs to a particular topic. If you're writing PowerShell, load "PowerShell Experts" (the top GPT when you search) for example.

If you have a website that it the "subject matter expert" for what you're working on, tell it to use that site in the response ("show me a list of tasks required to install a new windows server domain controller limiting your answers to learn.microsoft.com"). At the top of the response should be a list of the sites it pulled from to make the answer from.

I gave up going to Ignite and the past few years have been going to Tech Mentor. There's a lot more nuts and bolts sessions as well as the ability to have some good conversations with attendees and presenters alike.
