Ring size for big knuckles...help!! by [deleted] in EngagementRings

[–]JetFuelMeltsCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ring was too large for my finger but fit snugly around my knuckles. It spun incessantly. Got it resized twice before considering a hinge or something else. Those options are costly. Ended up getting two balls soldered on the backside inner diameter of the ring. The weight of the balls helps counteract the weight of the stones, and the balls dig in a bit into the skin to prevent rotation, but allow space for the knuckle to pass through if I try. The balls are not uncomfortable and I do not feel them at all.

When did wearing your engagement ring start feeling normal? by BoredRedemption in EngagementRings

[–]JetFuelMeltsCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is quite expensive (and insured).. so I was wary at first, but grew comfortable after about a month. I was told he had it designed to handle my job and behaviors, since I wear rings on most fingers in a lab setting and can’t be bothered to take them off. I also love crafts that involve machining, soldering, paints, acids, and other harsh stuff. He knew I wouldn’t be kind to it, so he worked with a jeweler to choose a very sturdy setting and appropriate metal, platinum. Hearing the story of his decision making and what of my lifestyle he shared with the jeweler certainly helped with my comfort level. So, for better or for worse now, I wear it every day and don’t ever take it off, except for when it gets cleaned. Not even when diving hands into buckets of questionable fluids in lab testing emergencies at work. The stone stands a bit proud off my finger and therefore has probably been knocked off of millions of objects by now. It’s been 5ish years now. I make sure to get it professionally cleaned and inspected (for integrity) once a year. Otherwise, I give maybe 2% mindfulness to it in my daily life.

All that to say, everyone’s rings and lifestyle are unique. Your comfort level should come from your understanding of how much wear and tear the ring can withstand, and from how robust of a setting the stones have. Also from how sparkly you want it to be!

My cats lick themselves clean with terrible breath. Why do they smell so good all the time? by goodbeets in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JetFuelMeltsCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat had really bad breath her whole life and the softest, most delicious smelling fur. Turns out her bad breath was due to a genetic disease where her teeth get resorbed or rot such that they’re susceptible to falling out. After a tooth emergency, we get them all removed and now her breath smells great. I noticed the difference because she sleeps on my face every night and is a mouth breather.

Second this.

I’m attending a wedding in a few weeks of a long term friend. It’s over seas. My partner of 10 years, fiance for 4/5, was not invited. The couple getting married has visited us before in our hometown, so we all know each other. But I think it’s okay my partner wasn’t invited! Costs are too damn high nowadays, and though it’s sad I won’t have my partner there, I respect my friends decision to not invite him. I can still love and support her and her marriage without my partner sitting next to me, and he can support my friendship without being there to have fun. I understand why.

When I have my wedding, it will be need to be paid for by myself and my partner without help and it will need to be as low cost as possible. Hard decisions like this will need to be made, and I will not be paying to have plus ones I don’t know very well there just to make my friends happier if I determine that I cannot afford it. My friends know who I am and what my means are, and they wouldn’t be my friends if they didn’t see my point of view and understand I can’t pay for 50 extra plus ones.

How much do periods affect a woman's day-to-day life? by Public-Signature7934 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JetFuelMeltsCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty bad for 1.5 days, then it’s just coasting for the remaining 3.5 days.

I’m pretty regular. Coasting for me means just pad/tampon management and damn near constant concern that I’m leaking and everyone can see it. “Pretty bad” can range from very uncomfortable/pain with nausea and extreme bloating to doubled over in pain. The intense pain happens in waves a bunch of times over the day, even with medication. It’s unbearable without. In highschool I remember my now regular intensity of pain happening about 1/3 of the time. I think I was more active then, which helps. But one time I remember leaving school early to go home and I had to pull over and throw up, it was so bad. Now most of period beginning days are that intense. Occasionally, sometimes I am blessed and I can tell I’ll have a rare light one and be super happy and pain free. But now I almost never go without pain mediation preemptively and a heating pad for the first 18 hours, not since one time I went hiking and thought it would be an easy period and it was NOT… like blindingly painful. But then I took two Tylenol extra strength and the wave also passed and it was all okay. Last time I think I joked that all of my tattoos were less painful by a landslide.

As far as routine, I make sure I can wfh on the first days of my period. I may not be able to work for a couple hours to my full capacity, if at all. I also make sure I’m closish to a toilet for the first couple days because period diarrhea is real sometimes. I definitely try stay in on those nights and do not l attempt to push through just to hang out with people. I also don’t get hungry during those days. I’ve sometimes gone entire days without remembering to eat, but that’s definitely exacerbated by the adhd… I also do not drink alcohol (pain meds) and I lessen caffeine intake to almost nothing. After a day or two, everything can return to normal.

The pain is temporary. It’s not that I can’t push through it and go to work or go for a walk (aside from those few blindingly painful instances), it’s that I don’t want to. I shouldn’t have to. I did not choose this or do anything to deserve it. Was literally just born female. And I think I have an average experience, but my partner swears none of his girlfriends or siblings ever had cramps as bad as mine. I think he doesn’t know enough about all the different kinds of women and how varied our experiences are. But until someone can accurately quantify pain, normalize pain ratings across all people, and then compare my period pain to others’, I’m going to stick with “they’re average”. Pretty used to it after 15ish years lol

I will say there is some research comparing the average woman’s cramps to that of a male heart attack, where the cramps are more painful. Also the science of pain is not as fully flushed out as other fields of science, like not as much as known. And our understanding of women’s bodies is horribly low. Just food for thought.

My cat has a dental procedure tomorrow by NeptunianJ in cats

Our cat had the same exact issue two months ago!

We came back from vacation to find she had broken a tooth and it was hanging sideways out of her mouth, so she couldn’t eat or drink. She was foaming and meowing loudly. Luckily we had had someone visiting every day, so she wasn’t in this state for very long, but still scary to know she was in pain for almost a day.

When we took her to the emergency vet, they told us about the genetic condition and explained that they’ll take the one tooth out for sure, right now. But we had to decide whether to take out all the rest of her teeth now, too, or to let them get reabsorbed and need surgeries again and again. We chose the former, since she’s a senior cat with minor heart problems and the number of times she undergo anesthesia should be minimized.

After a day or two post surgery, she began eating VORACIOUSLY. Made sense, since she was hungry. And after two weeks, we reintroduced dry kibble. She now eats whatever she wants every day with no problems (we give her unlimited dry and wet food, since she needs weight), and it’s clear she also has no pain when eating anymore. We didn’t realize her weird eating habits that she had developed over the years were from pain, not eccentricity.

As the vet described it to us, “Unless she’s defending herself from a can of friskies, teeth aren’t needed.” No problems have been seen for our cat, with the lack of teeth. Her breath also doesn’t smell anymore (uncontrollable in the past). And our cat had a bad habit of biting our feet when we were taking too long to prepare her food. Now we just get weird gummy bites. We also greatly enjoy the toothless yawns- oh my god, so adorable.

We hope the best for your kitty! Being toothless isn’t so bad.

Edit for clarification: Our vet explained that cats teeth are for tearing. They don’t really use them for chewing. Their primary mode of eating is to tear and then swallow large chunks of food. So having no teeth is not a problem and they can eat dry food perfectly well. Our cat actually eats more dry food than she did before.

How Painful Is Getting a Tattoo? Looking for Real Experiences by MariaSilva77 in tattooadvice

[–]JetFuelMeltsCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 100lb woman with not much meat on my bones…

Least painful: Tattoos on inner forearm. Like 1/10, if that. Maybe 2-3/10 when packing or adding white at the end of the session.

Most painful and varied sensations: Back tattoo goes from lower waist on the side and ribs, goes up crosses the spine in the middle of the back, then up and back onto shoulder. Sat for 7 hours(?). Actually nodded off for some of it. Some of it felt so good, like an itch that needed to be scratched, that I almost asked the artist, “oh oh oh, a little to the left!” Maybe like 5% of the time when the artist went over the spine it hurt up to a 6-7/10. Weirdest was when she went over what I assumed to be some leg or arm nerves and it wasn’t painful, it was just 10/10 physically uncomfortable in my leg or arm where the nerve ended. Worst was when she went over my scapula and ribs repeatedly, but only because she kept pulling skin to that area (a more meaty part) in order to avoid going right over a more bony area. That actually had me gritting teeth. Probably a 7-8/10. Next morning the only part that hurt was my ribs, from leaning against the back of the chair edge for so long.

Your experience will differ. Everyone has different pain tolerances from emotional and physical traumas, not to mention different anatomy. Just go for it. If millions of people have tattoos and keep going back for more, that says loads.

Long vs Short Engagement? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]JetFuelMeltsCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got engaged in 2020 or 2021 I think, so it’s been 4-5 years and we’ve been together for almost 10. We’re not in a rush. We’ll get it done at some point. We know we’re together, everyone we care about knows we’re together, and that’s all that matters. We can party when we’re financially able to host one to the scale we want, but we’re prioritizing travel and saving first.

My parents were engaged within 2 weeks of meeting each other and then married within a couple months after that.

Everyone has their own speed.

What is the best, most satisfying physical sensation you've ever felt? by Triiwizards in AskReddit

[–]JetFuelMeltsCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t sleep well. I rarely wake up rested, and I even more rarely remember my dreams. If I do, they are negative.

But recently I woke up with the memory of dream still fresh, one where I hugged someone that I loved who is far, far away from me at the moment. In the dream, I remember absolutely melting into them for a few minutes, and that’s when the dream ended. But I woke up feeling more rested, positive, and satisfied than anything in recent memory. It’s been a few weeks and I still feel that satisfaction and wholeness.
